That's a nice collection Charlie. I don't have any pictures of my socket collection but I'll try to get some. I have the Hanson trays for 1/4 sockets and I can't find anyone that has a 1/4 drive 5/8 standard & deep socket. I hate to have the tray with sockets missing.

Does anyone know where to get 1/4 drive X 5/8 sockets?

You care what brand? I know the tool trucks go that big in some sets, but I have no idea on other manufacturers...

Snap on, Mac, and Matco are the only ones that I know would have them. I don't think S-K has them but I could be wrong.

I don't care what brand they are but I would rather have 6 point chrome sockets. I looked on the web sites of the Tool Truck brands and didn't see one that carried them. Maybe I missed it somehow. It looks like since Hanson made a provision for them someone would have them. I havn't been able to find any yet though.

Thats been one of my biggest reservations about getting Hanson racks. I'd have to go fill em all up. That and the price for plastic :wtf: Sure makes for nice organization though.

They do seem a bit wasteful of space, too.

Sometimes yes, sometimes no. The downfall to them is that you need the deep drawers. Sometimes the plastic cases like SK sockets come in are much better for storage, like the impacts. Just pop the lid off (its removeable) and you have a flat storage tray

the thing I dont like about them is that they are backward
they should run from smallest to biggest not biggest to smallest

If you notice - all sockets are packaged that way - with the smallest on the right and the largest on the left. You can obviously flip the whole rail around if you are using that type of storage - but all the plastic blister packs etc have them set up that way.

I prefer to keep the sockets on a steel rail (like the one pictured below) - it is easier to just take the whole rail to the job - that way you have all the sizes you need and don't have to walk back and forth to the tool box when you have a brain fart and can't figure out that the 5/8" bolt isn't a 11/16" or 9/16" or 16mm :headscrat

I personally like them because it’s real easy to see where a socket is, just quick grab and your good. We share a lot of tools and it makes it easy for someone to know where a socket is. Because we share tools, stuff goes missing and it’s real easy to see what’s not there and what is. And since I just use my cart, I just take it to my work so I don’t have to walk back and forth. Just hang over the side of a boat, grab the socket real quick and back to work.

But I will say that they do take a quite a bit of space, but its no worse then what I see a lot of people do with 3 screwdrivers placed just so in one drawer so they look pretty and then the person is complaining about needing a bigger box...

hanson rail that i never want buy as it is little space waste. two of my tech friend had few of hanson rails and one of my tech friend have many hanson rail and it used all spaces in his matco top full wide drawers and he said it is nice but cost him a money for hanson rails as like 15 to 20 dollars each and he had almost 5 or 8 hanson rails.

i like mac tool's socket tray as it have red box with full sockets on it and you just can pick up and carry around or hang on cart's edge as it will hang on it. i did it few time with my cart anf it is handy for me to work. i dont pay any rail as it already come with socket sets. i do have mechanic time saver magnet as it is for my useful socket that i almost use every seconds in dealership.

Well, I just flipped through the Matco, Cornwell, and Snap-On catalogs. The ONLY 1/4" drive 5/8" socket is a shallow 6-pt snap-on.
http://buy1.snapon.com/catalog/item...id=134&supersede=&store=snapon-store&tool=all

The others don't offer anything.

46mm fits old Land Cruiser crank nuts, this I know....

I believe it fits VW bus rear axle nuts, too (sedans are 36mm). Deaf says it will fit late Chrysler stuff...but I don't know about that.

Yes the rear axle nuts on VW bus 64-79 and Vanagon 82-92 are 46mm.

Here are some old pictures of my toolbox at the farm. I have Hansen peg racks for 1/4, 3/8, and 1/2 std and metric chrome in the top of my box. I have 3/8 and 1/2 std and metric Impacts in the top drawer of the base. My 3/4 chrome set lives in the bottom drawer of my base with my breakers and other large stuff. I have 3/4" std and metric shallow impacts and a full set of 3/4 metric chrome in my other cabinet.

Deere changed combines to all metric in 1990. We also got a 94 Ford genisis that is all metric last fall, so I have more uses for the 3/4" metric sets.

I don't have 3/4" drive metrics because sizes over an 1" you can use standard sockets. Some of my snap on sockets say both the standard and metric size on them.

I paid $88 for my Proto 3/4" metric impacts. I think I olny paid $60 for my S-K chrome set. I spent almost as much on 2 sockets that were missing, and needed. I think they were 25 and 30 both are used on Agco tractors. Browse E-bay and look for 3/4 metric and you will find sets. Be patient.

Here are the snap on sockets that are in my toolbox that have both metric and standard sizes on them.

1 1/16"-27mm
1 3/16"-30mm
1 3/8"-35mm
1 1/2"-38mm
2 1/8"-54mm

I also use a 6pt 1 7/16" as a 36mm alot and have had no problems.

Thank you very much for this info. I was just thinking about purchasing 3/4" dr. metric sockets. I will certainly hold off a bit now. Are these fairly common metric sizes this large? Are there others I should consider?

I have used sae sockets for everything over 25mm and hae never had to buy a large metric socket. The 1 7/16" is a little loose when using as 36mm but as long as its a 6pt you shouldn't have any problem.

It doesn't matter to me which way they run, but they should run the shallows in the opposite direction as the deeps. That way, the socket pegs could be closer together and the entire tray could be made narrower.

Most of my sockets are on clip rails, which I don't really like, but they can be put much closer together to save space.

I have been looking for a better solution. All of the different socket racks, trays, and pegs have their good points, but they also have disadvantages, usually in wasted space.

my tech friend had double hanson trays because he had 6pts and 12pts chrome sockets but most time i see he never use 12pts in shop but i do for engine repair as jeep had 6 inline 4.0L that use 12pts nut for long time but big problem is it is rust and it had to break loose by breaker bar before use impact wrench to loose engine cylinder head. then i found out the new model with new 4.0l inline 6 cylinders use 6pts nut instead 12pts......

also i had many sockets than him but he dont had 3/4dr sockets set..... i do
