Hey there, I'm new to this site and interested in seeing what others have done for a computer in their garage.

I use my iPad, that way if I need to I can move it with me if I need to constantly reference something. I also put a sheet of saran wrap on the screen, as to protect it from my often greasy mitts.

EDIT- I also do the saran wrap when I'm using my iPad as a reference while working in the kitchen. Keeps sauces and germs off the screen.

If I had a computer in my shop I would never get anything done. Watching football is enough of a distraction.

No pics, but I have my old iMac DV+ from college sitting on a shelf above my work bench. I must say I have found it very handy for looking stuff up when im out there working on a project. I've also downloaded and stored a bunch of PDF service manuals and the like onto it. I also have it linked to my iTunes on my main computer in the house and wired it into my shop radio so I can listen to my iTunes music when im out there working.

I've made a good living working on but having one in my garage is the last thing I want.

I do bring my IPad out once in a while - having the internet to figure out stuff is great. I spent about 4 hours trying to put emergency brake together on my '68 Corvette one day - was about to give up when I googled and found out about tying the springs with dental floss and then burning it off after assembly - without that I'd still be swearing at the thing.

I just picked up an older used laptop that I keep in the garage. It's one of the best tools I have because I use the service manuals that are on CD's. It's nice to look up things out in the garage so I am not running inside looking things up while I am all greasy and helps save paper and ink because I don't have to print out anything. I can also listen to pandora and order parts while i am out there.

I don't have any pictures of it, but since my garage is designed to serve double duty as a man cave when it needs to be, there is a fairly decent computer being designed into the workbench with a flush mounted 24" LED monitor with a secondary output to a 55" TV.

That's exactly what I'm going for as well. I have a computer at my bench with a pop up monitor (built into the bench) then a second feed to the 46" mounted on the wall. I will be working in the garage building my TR6 but it's also my hang out / poker / darts room.

I have just recently fitted the old house PC into the garage as was hacked off taking the laptop in and out all the time.

While I agree totally that the garage is a good place to escape the PC etc I do find it really handy to have access to the web ordering parts and looking up bits and bobs, and it is much easier to do this at the time with the parts on the bench.

And I use it to play tunes while in the garage.

Decade old 15" Dell laptop (Intel P4) in a docking station with an 15" external LCD monitor running extended desktop. I use it for looking up things like lug nut torque specs and for ordering parts. I have WiFi in the shop, but generally never undock the laptop or bring any of my other laptops into the shop.

I put one of my computers in my garage about 2 years ago and haven't ever used it. If I don't find a use for it soon, I'm tossing it and gaining back my workbench space it is wasting.

Welcome to the Garage Journal kmcphee. That's a pretty cool shop computer! Just a tip. . .before you start a new thread, have a quick look to see if there is one already out there that covers the exact same topic. I searched for 5 seconds and came up with this:

I just take my laptop down to the garage, I find the roof of my old Jag is just the right height and with wifi it works easily....I do lay a towel down on top of the car first of course.

I use a dedidcated laptop (but it lives in the house when no in use) to control my chassis dyno. I have 22 inch monitors on the front and back walls driven off the laptop.
