For those that have a loft/storage area in their garage/shop let's see how you did your stairs. We will be needing to make a decision within the next few weeks on how we would like our stairs.

Thanks,
Todd

There haven't been any posting on this thread and I didn't want it to die.
I don't have my stair case installed yet but it ought to be within a few weeks. I do have all the parts, just need the epoxy floor covering to be done.

So the photos show:

support of loft structure with wall bracings and framing for wall opposite that (3 pics)

cantilevered landing (1 pic)

stringers -- they are a metal some-assembly-required kit. Just left and right stringers - this system does not allow for a middle (or any interior) stringer (2 pics)

treads -- sort of. The manufacturer directed that for a 4' wide stair case, I'd need treads made from hardwood that were at least 1.5" thick. Finding those proved challenging and quite expensive. I ended up buying 4x butcher blocks made of hardwood and 2" thick -- each block is 4' wide and 36" deep. So each butcher block can (will be) cut into 3x treads -- (last pic)

The stair case will end where the red ladder is standing and run parallel to the yet-to-be finished wall leading to the landing

Not sure if this is the design you were even considering but how I did my stairs to conserve space. A little scope-creep became involved, 2 axis trunnion, Harbor Freight 440 lb cable hoist, center latch to hold the load instead of the cable then there's air cylinder and limit switches for future automation......it was wintertime and not a lot else going on so it got several weeks' worth of attention.

I plan to install a loft one day over a portion of my shop. I would like a staircase up the side of the enclosed space w/ a storage space under it. I am thinking a 'utility room' under the stairs to house the air compressor may work out. Curious to see what others have done.

Not sure if I have pics, but I have a 40'x16' loft at the back of my shop (with a 20x16' extension on one half). I put the stairs on the side up against the wall. At that end, the loft is only 8' deep (just for the width of the stairs), so the stairs only extend into the rest of the shop a couple steps.

In progress now... will have more pics in a few days ...

Monitor style building. Ground level footprint is 48' x 64'... loft is 24' x 64'

Stairway is being built in the front left corner of the building

There will be two landings...

20200729_181624.jpeg

After these first six steps, the staircase turns left and climbs 10 more steps. Another landing (currently working in it), another left turn and the final six steps.

I had to build the staircase this way to maintain a reasonable rise/run and maintain adequate headroom. The window in the front of the building proved to be a challenge as well. I somehow managed to fit everything in... lol

If you're still interested, i can update with more pics in a couple of days...

I got these stairs from a friend who didn't need them for a project. Originally I had planned just some attic stair thing, the pull down type, to save some space, but these are really compact and way better than the pull down stuff. Pretty sturdy actually, even with my 220lbs on them. They also look kind of cool.

HD sells them around here, but they come from Italy.

Ah, that would be Bently, in the old mill building!

Bingo!

That’s an amazing building! The guys went all out with design and the flawless execution of all of the visible installation of plumbing and electrical conduit. The copper stills are works of art.

I went to a tasting and I can say that their products are also first class. Gin and vodka so far...bourbon in the future.

You can see mine in the build thread below. In my first shop the stairs came up into the mez area taking a lot of floor space from up above. This shop has the stairs out side the mez and going to a landing. I did it this way to maximize the floor space under the mez as well as the mez.

Do you know the manufacturer of these? I searched and couldn’t come up with anything.

Shopnut's got it going on!. Those are beautiful stairs.

To my second floor, I put two steps up to a 4x4' platform on which I built two winders, (turned 90 degrees) then up 10 steps. I can get a 16 ' or longer board around that corner.

Winders aren't real popular but built right they save room, two years going and no missteps.

Full disclosure...after building with a second floor shop planned, I got real tired of climbing 16 steps so everything is staying downstairs. Looked great on paper but these old legs don't like stairs so much anymore.

These will show the evolution of mine. I don’t plan to condition the loft space, so the foam insulation is there to reduce heat loss up the stairs. I’ll be building a custom door for the bottom. I’m very pleased with how little floor space is lost to the stairs. The building is 26’ deep x 48’ wide.

UK garages are generally much smaller than those over the pond. However here is my garage stairs which will access a self contained apartment (man cave) over the garage.
The stair will have to be boxed and have a fire door in to comply with building/fire regulations.

I had the same question. They are made by Arke. Zax was nice enough to provide a link.

https://www.homedepot.com/p/Arke-Nice2-22-in-Black-Modular-Staircase-Kit-K50104/205110572

CAMM

Arke makes or at least used to make an extensive line of modular staircases. I was considering them for my cabin but ended up going the DIY route.

I just checked their website and it seems different than the last time I visited.

https://www.arkestairs.com/

At the time I was looking at their product line Home Depot had most of the product line on their site. How much they actually inventory is something I never looked into.

I was waiting for you to weigh in. I remember following your thread as you built the storage under them. Could you post some pics of the storage you have cut into them for those that haven't seen your build thread?
