JZ,

Please provide more information on the wire wheel that you are using. I have been using an Anderson 03334 8" inch .006" stainless steel with a 5/8 arbor and it seems a little too aggressive on a 3/4hp. Looking for something a little "softer".

It's a Weiler Tru Lock, also with 0.006" wires.

Interesting discovery.

While cleaning up these 3/4's tonight I noticed they have different tool rests. They are the same model number. But one has a slightly older serial number.

The older one has the larger 2 piece tool rest. And the newer one has the smaller 1 piece tool rest like the 1/2hp.

I truly think these are both original. Any ideas why they are different. Did they just start going cheap at a certain point in time. :headscrat

Cal: some of the 3/4 HP blocks have those really STOUT tool rests with the base and extra large water tray too.

nice collection and are the blocks in your area following you home now that you finally got your first on last month?

ALL: you guys are having way too much fun tonight and thanks for the great read with facts, supplies and humor mixed in.

Has anyone done a larger 3/4 label. I've checked the websites you guys are talking about and they all have a size limit.

I need one that is 4-7/16" x 3-7/8".

Hey Torqueman. I'm looking to use one in you file. But it shows up small. Only 640 x 574 pix, and 172 kb. Will they be able to work with that.

You guys have any ideas where I can get it done. And what would the price range be.

Cals,

I've searched for that file name on my HD, PB, and the '... What's the fuss?' thread, without a 'hit'.

UPDATE - March 26, 2016. See post # 8255.

I did put these files on PB.

  • 0.75 HP CM 397.19350 Maroon Label cman-grind-red.png
  • 0.75 HP CM 397.19350 Maroon Label cman-grind-red_1.png
And this file on the '... What's the fuss?' thread - 0.75-HP m-397.19451 Grinder Label 1.zip

Can I ask, where did you find that label in .jpg format?

FYI - I made the label for this grinder based on a png file converted to .doc file in .zip above.

OK, thanks.

Those are png files, but you can edit them in MS Office and save them as a larger size.

I don't know how the file would have been changed to a jpg extension.

I did put these files on PB.

  • 0.75 HP CM 397.19350 Maroon Label cman-grind-red.png
  • 0.75 HP CM 397.19350 Maroon Label cman-grind-red_1.png
I don't have extras, sorry. Also, MS Office is really cumbersome to work on a graphic style file; but it's all I had.

UPDATE - March 26, 2016

Here's a larger .jpg - the best of 6.

Another couple of observations after spending the last 2 evening's taking apart and cleaning these two 3/4's.

On the heavy duty tool rests, both sides are the same. There's no left and right. That's gonna drive me nuts with my **** obsessiveness. :willy_nil

Or do I maybe have an odd ball. Can anyone verify. But both sides have the same part number.

I believe that's going to force me to make some with a left and right just because,,,lol.

Also. How the Hell do you guys stand that rattle trap quench tray. That will drive me to drink. Well. That and my truck will get me there too. ;)

So I put a piece of weather stripping on the back of it. It's really too thick. But it's what I had on hand.

Maybe I could use some little clear disks or what ever. Also might help keep your guys pretty new paint from getting scared up too.

OK. That's all for now. I'm just sitting here looking at my fresh 3/4 running on the kitchen table. It's like looking at a Christmas tree with all the lights out,,,lol. I'm just draw to the light like a Moth. :Freak:

Then there's their 1/2 brother. But I think there's something wrong with him. He can't make up his mind if he's a grinder or a sander.

I have the smaller (1/3 HP) brother to your "1/2 brother". Thinking that it was an aftermarket attachment, I have been trying to find information on it. Reference my 12-29-2012 post #194 in this thread (below).

Craftsman 1/3 HP. Craigslist find. As purchased / not cleaned up yet.

Anyone have information on the disc sander attachment? Haven't found any manufacturer's identifiers.

Now, in your picture there is a Craftsman owners manual 397.19345 showing the disc sander attachment. P/N for my 1/3 HP version is 397.19390. Thanks to your post, I know a bit more about my grinder / sander.

My replies are in Blue.
... On the heavy duty tool rests, both sides are the same. That doesn't look right. You can verify the parts list from the owners manuals. Many of which are on OWWM.org

I did the same.

I picked this up for $5 at a pawn shop parking lot swap meet yesterday. It looks somewhat like other block grinders, but the tag is very faded and I can't make out much. Anyone know any way to figure out any info on it?

When I have it plugged in and flip the switch, the shafts spin with no unusual noise and the light comes on. It doesn't have the shields or water tray. There seems to be a lot of surface rust/corrosion as if it spent a lot of time outside. It is a lot lighter than I was expecting, though I've not lifted many grinders in my lifetime. The plan is to break it down and refurbish it if possible.

Can't go wrong for $5
The 1/2 hp units are great.
It will clean up just fine.
Here is a before and after of one I picked up. It worked like new. Just cosmetically bad.

PC,
Based on the tool rests, that looks to be a 1/2hp split-phase motor. It's what is known as a "flat top" and was made in th 1970's. You might find a date stamp on the bottom cover. For $5, you can't go wrong.

Hello guys, is there any threads here on restoring the lights on these clan grinders? The flexible shaft on mine is a bit wonky/loose/wobbly and I was wondering how to tighten it back up. Thanks for your help.

First unscrew the bottom cover. You will see where the light flexible shaft goes thru, and there will be a nut underneath. Just tighten it.
Look at the nut where the black wire is going thru at the bottom of this picture. That's the underside where the light shaft bolts up to the housing.

I'm really confused with these heavy duty tool rests.

The parts list calls for a tool rest pack. Item #34. But then it has just one single tool rest. Item #35. So it does not show a left and right.

http://www.searspartsdirect.com/model-part/39719350/0247/0721000/00020580/00001.html

I was ready to live with it until yesterday. I was at a friends house and he has an older 1/2. Well it has a left and right tool rest.

I could understand if just one was available and that was it. Like it shows on the parts list. But clearly there are left and rights. Maybe it's a year or model thing.

Here's my 3/4 with a notch up and a notch down because it's the same piece. And my friends 1/2 with the left and right. What do you guys have for the heavy duty 2 piece style. Pics would be great.

Just found this guy. Need a grinder anyway and you guys have me all hooked on vintage stuff now! Going to pick up sooner than later. Pics look good and price is right as far as I know. Can't see the stand very well at all in CL pics. Looks really complete. Will post more after I get her home.

Trying to buy this stuff right! Love the old tools.

Damn.... I was holding out hoping that the seller would drop the price since it's so far from me. I have the exact model I got from Torqueman a couple years ago and its nice! Much more powerful than the handful of 1/3hp's I have. I was hoping to get this so I could have a pair of twins and (possibly) an OEM stand.

Another one of those "I'd rather spend 50 and have USA made than 40 and Chinese" moments, you know? I thought 50 was fair. Looks to be in really good shape and complete. Far from me too but he's meeting me.

That's a more than fair price considering it looks all there. Wasn't his asking price around $100? Looks like he took the listing down already.

I compared two 3/4-HP models OMs [free downloads at OWWM.org]. Looks like they eliminated separate part #'s.

OFFICIAL NOTICE!!

I'm going to be making some of the 2 piece heavy duty tool rests like the guy over on owwm.org had posted about. I'm going to be offering some for sale.

IS THERE ANY INTEREST.

I'm wanting to see if anybody wants any so I can buy the material. I haven't really figured out the cost yet. I am not looking to get rich. But I do need to supplement my income a little since I'm basically poor being on disability,,,lol.

I will be making a left and right side. They will not have the hole in it that no one knows what it's for anyway,,,lol. And also. I'm not going to round off the corners to keep cost down. I know you guys got the right stuff to do that yourself.

So please speak up if you want any. Thanks.

EDIT TO ADD A WHO'S IN!!

1. Cal

2. Ziggy

3. Torqueman.

Here's pics of what the other guy had made. Mine should be just like this made to my specs.

Cal, It looks like you'd be able to make these thicker than the originals, so they would be an upgrade as well. Please put me down for a complete set.

Cals - Yes, I'm in for a set; maybe 2, depending on final cost. What material, BTW.

Thanks for doing this.

Oh, and they look great!

I did not make those in the pics. That's what the guy over at owwm.org had made.

They're going to be made out of 2-1/2" x 3" x 1/4" angle iron. And the flats will also be 1/4".

I'm out of school for the Summer. So I will be making these on a manual mill at a friends shop. If I get a lot of requests I might ask him if he could write a CNC program and make them where he works. But he will want paid too. And a lot more than me. Besides. I kinda want to make them myself,,,,lol. I don't want to be just a middle man flipping some guys goods. Comprendea,,,lol.

Got it home! Judging by the wasps nests on the left wheel, it hasn't seen service in a while. Check out the motor tag! Only thing wrong I can see if some electrical tape on the cord, easy fix. Should clean up real nice. Pretty cool for $50.00 I think! Happy happy happy!

Hey Torqueman,,,or anyone else for that matter. But I figure TM goes through these blocks.

There's a block grinder stator over on owwm.or for sale for $1 plus shipping. Stator only, so don't get excited by the pic. And he only has the stator. I all ready asked,,,lol.
