Thanks for the replies guys. The stand seems pretty sturdy so I think I'll keep it for now. I tell ya this 1hp doesn't even bog down when grinding pretty hard. Absolute world of difference over the cheap "3/4hp" harbor freight it is replacing.

I had a '1HP' 8" HF grinder, it stopped pretty easily working with a wire wheel, flap disc, and certainly bogged if i leaned on it with grinding wheels. Never compared directly since I sold it first, but I'd say the 1/3 HP blocks are more powerful than it. That 1HP block is a beast they are in no way even the same league.

I believe that one is the 'first generation' late 70s 1HP block right? and the black cast one with the wider arms is a later design?

cheechi - I agree, the 1/3-HP Blocks are a match for much higher rated 'modern' grinders found in big box stores today.

I also think your are right on the designs.

Ken - Here's a picture of a 1 HP Block on that style stand. Plenty sturdy, but a lot of 'wasted' space.

Got some spare parts from a craftsman 1/3 horsepower grinder model 397.19580 for sale. Located in Prescott, AZ but can ship. Everything is in great shape with no cracks.

Thanks to Hiatt1991, my 1960s (correct me if I'm wrong) block grinder is 100% complete and ready for service. I needed a wheel cover and he had one.

It will be a user for a while and eventually I will give it a new lick of paint. Mechanically, she runs like new.

Cajunfirebawk,

You are a ruthless, cold, heartless fellow for posting such delicious grinder eye candy. ......WHERE AND HOW did you come to own that beauty.

Here is mine!

I'm thinking about selling my 3/4 7" Industrial. It looks like new and runs nice and smooth.

How much do you guys think I should list it for on Craigslist (Phoenix).

Or should I just keep this beast? I don't use it much, but is is awesome...

Cajun: can you post a picture of your label/badge on your grinder? i'm guessing it's a PRE BLOCK, but I love those and their look with all that shiny chrome is not bad either. NEW OLD STOCK? WOW and nice find!

Looking to mount my block grinder on a stand. I don't want to drill into my garage floor. Should an original craftsman pedestal stand be secured to the floor?

I know they have holes in the base, that can be used for mounting to the floor or mounting some anti-vibration pads.

Another idea - hockey pucks drilled to allow a carriage bolt/washer to mount from below and secured with nyla-lock nuts and fender washers on top.

I have a 3/4-HP Block and OEM CM stand on a thick fiber door mat, which keeps it from walking now.

I've never had any of my grinders secured to the floor. You shouldn't be pushing that hard into it to move it. Like someone else said, some rubber isolators might be nice just to absorb any little vibration and prevent it from walking if you have a really slick floor.

Picked this up today from pawn shop. Seems to be in really good shape. Original wheels, everything stock and nice. Even has the tag on the cord telling what plug to use for 220. Does anyone know if the stand is one for this grinder or just a universal stand?

The stand kinda looks like the one my table saw is on. I attached a picture of it. I cant imagine what a 1hp block grinder is like, my 3/4hp is hands down the scariest grinder I've every used.

Where's the thread that has the list of block grinder models lined up with HP/motor ratings?

I always have a hard time finding it, and can't, yet again.

l haven't done it, But they are said to be good under a compressor.
Delta had a similar factory Rubber foot/Mount, on my Circa 1965 14" bandsaw l have.
(has to take them 0ff though, to fit the mobile base.)

Here's one I have on PhotoBucket, not sure how long you'll be able to view it.

It is not a complete, exhaustive list.

I am not paying their ransom.

Another cheap CL purchase about 10 miles away. A clean & complete Craftsman 397 19580 that came from a local cabinet shop. Sellers pictures gave the appearance of rust coated, which turned out to be fine sawdust. The rubber feet/anti-vibration mounts were still attached...

Looks like they painted the center cover at some point too. Looks like a silver hammered finish. The shiny new Philips head screws holding the cover are a giveaway also.

Either way it looks nice and I would have bought it too for $75 or less. I've already purchased a second original Craftsman stand and I'm in the lookout for a 2nd grinder now.

Thanks! That looks similar to what I saw in a thread here - I just wish I could find that thread, it had a lot of discussion about different model numbers and such, and had a more expansive version of this list.

Good lord that grinder is beautiful. I love seeing old original gear in great shape like that and with the box and paperwork, makes it even more impressive.

Cajun: i was already 10 months old when they boxed your grinder and I certainly don't look that good. maybe they should have boxed me back in 1956 and yes that's when it left the factory. WELL DONE!!

Yes, that Pre block I found above is a thing of beauty, almost art worthy, IMHO.

So compared to that this will be mundane, another 70's block found in its cardboard box, mint, unused;

Have been so busy @ work haven't posted in a while, now I am catching up. That brings my "boxed block" total to 8, plus 1 new w/out a box and too many loose used ones to count :eyecrazy:
