I personally can't see why not.
I agree. The surface speed would be slightly slower, but I'd think a used 7" stone can have the same condition if it has been worn down enough.

Just wondering why. Do you have spare 6" stones, or ... ?

I know some members have mentioned difficulty finding the 7" size. I just received a Norton, Aluminum Oxide, 1" Arbor, 7" Diameter, 1" Thickness, Medium Grit stone. It came with arbor bushings ~ $29.

This is for a dual speed/HP 7312B Baldor. You'd have to verify that particular one would fit your Block. :)

I always thought the older mailbox style
grinders in the same HP drew more amps. Are the newer ones more powerful? The mailbox style is 5.0amps at 115v and the block is 6.0amps at 115v.

They are all over the map when it comes to amp ratings. Some 1/3 hp have more then then 1/2 hp etc. We would need to come up with a standard way to test.

yeah I don’t know how. maybe testing current draw when you stick a piece of steel into the grinding wheel as hard as possible.

i’m debating what blocks to keep and sell. I have those two 3/4 HP and then I have both style 1/2HP. i’m trying to slim down the collection because I also have a 3/4HP baldor buffer, a 1/2 Delta, and a really old 1/2HP blueprint.

The 1/2 Bluepoint was likely made by Kingston-Conley and will be very good. I'd keep it over any of the Blocks.

thanks for the info. yes i’m probably keeping it because it’s just a coupe coats of paint away from the restoration being completed.

i’m keeping my delta too. the thing runs so smooth.

I think i’ll keep at least one block.

the baldor has extended shafts so I can’t get rid of that right now.

Yes I agree if we only had shop space to keep all of our treasures out and on the floor for use it would be great.

I've got an early block grinder and during wind down, about halfway through the wind down the grinder makes a click and sort of a whurring sound and seems to slow down faster. Is this normal or perhaps a bearing issue?

It's the centrifugal switch dropping out. It is normal.

I finally got my parts from powder coat today, they have been slammed with commercial stuff for two months, and it looks great. So I got to finish the block grinder and also the story. I didn't need it when I bought it but I will buy all of them I find. I spent about 35.00 total on it Donnie donated all of the powder coat and Dalton did all of the powder coat application. And Bill aka McBrownie donated the way cool label.
As I started building the grinder I was getting to know Dalton and had been watching him grow, He was a fairly new employee and suddenly was made the shop supervisor not by his choice but by necessity. He excelled at it and has the attitude of a much older person. I wont go into his personal life but it would make a best seller if it were a book. So today I gave him the grinder to add to his tool collection that he is just starting.
Donnie and I had a good laugh with him as he realized that he had been p.c. all the parts for himself not me. He said he was trying to get them so perfect. I challenged him to do every job the same way.
First is the before pic, then the finish. Thanks for all the great help from you guys getting me through the fix.91cdc557c8bb588e9b485dc1c4aedf40.jpg549ebacbbc4530cb983040a0d48e85ab.jpgb2b7fb0a0c05ca3e47bcb8c9ed3bf3d1.jpg47d11350cbe46609ee680b183cadc2f7.jpg7547f9a78db17b5e51e9a8c2f81c9717.jpgb9cc4da763c608c73a6e2d34cf18df44.jpg5ce4cf2b147df9a1c73e11a7b220fd32.jpg2bf8f384fc3fb197b6ae2f38f18df14e.jpg

Nice! Might not be 'original' but it sure is equally functional, and it looks great.
Is he tall, or is it just a really short pedestal?

Thanks everyone for the kind words. I'm on the lookout for another one. I would like to find a 1hp for me to keep. Then I would like to get a buffer maybe a baldor. But I still need one for another young man.

HJ,

Great job. The finished product looks great. Really nice job on fabricating those side covers and good luck on the 1hp search.

JIM: as I mentioned when you bought the $5 old block grinder that I'm pretty sure i would have passed. that said you made a gem out of it and a great gift to what sounds like a decent young man too.

WELL DONE SIR!!

My folks are getting ready to move halfway across the country, so my Dad is just starting to go through tools he won't need. First up is this grinder my grandfather bought new. Perfect timing, methinks, I've been looking for a deal on a grinder. And last I checked, free is a good deal.

I bring it home tonight, start up the google machine and find out this here block grinder is kind of a big deal. I don't know what year it is, and my Dad has no idea when his Dad bought it. Regardless, it's in perfect (dusty) shape, runs like a champ and has more power than I'll need. I'm super excited!

Check the cover on the bottom-that’s a late one based on the labeling..

The split phase 3/4 were put out after the 1hp came around. Not sure why they gimped it to basically low end 1/2 hp status.

Still, nice condition and complete. Also pretty rare model.

Picked up this today. 1/2 hp 397-19441. Not sure what year it is. Has some aftermarket rest on it. This things a beast, I did not realize they were so large. Will keep my Baldor and Red Wing company.
