Cag:I noticed that you are still searching even though i think you have one or two blocks on their way. Yes? and you might continue to search for another one just because these blocks will run almost forever.

All:so here is another maybe newer version of the block grinder with the sanding attachments we have been talking about. wouldn't these attachments work on our old block grinders? anybody tried to use one or have one to show off because i think Balane's is nice but not our block grinder??

You would have to do a few things but I think you could get that to work but that's just going off of the photos. Firstly, you can see it mounts with a round clamp that goes around a flange on the grinder. Block grinders don't have that flange so you'd have to cut an exact size metal disc to match that flange and then drill three holes to bolt it to the block grinder. Then you'd be able to clamp on that sanding attachment. You'd also have to drill a large hole in the center to let the block grinder's shaft pass through the disc. I don't actually see that as being too difficult.

Now the part we don't know about is how the shaft of that machine connects to the sanding attachment. Without being able to see under that cover you'd just have to hope there's a simple way to attach the arbor from the block grinder to the drive pulley on the sander. Without being able to see inside there you'd be going in with your fingers crossed. It would be an interesting conversion though.

Not a screaming deal IMO; overall condition is nice, BUT, its missing the bulb guard on the light, and the quench tray, and is only 1/3 HP? if you need one NOW, maybe, but I'd work on the price based on what is missing.

Mach:I'd probably buy it for that price if i needed another block because it is very clean, shields are the nicer metal old school ones, and you have the light even though it might not have or never had a shield. you have my vote.

Balane: i'll be on the lookout for a reasonably priced one because the one i found that i posted pictures of was $150 which is a little high i think for a plastic one without a stand. once we have one in our hands we can see if this idea might work.

So did anyone try to get a response on the 1 HP in Wisc.?
Inquiring minds want to know.

I just did a count of my grinders. Shocked myself.

Thought I had mostly 1/3 HP blocks.
Turned out it is mostly 1/2 HP.
The list:
1 1 HP in the mail and due here tomorrow
5 of the 1/2 HP including one round top industrial.
1 1/2 HP Baldor on homemade stand
1 ??? HP Rockwell project with shorted cord.
Gave away a plastic 1/3 variable speed.
1 1/3 HP (I think) on homemade table, out at the hangar
1 ??? HP Unknown brand on homemade stand.

So is 10 enough? Don't I need a 3/4 HP and a Baldor buffer?

I have 2 in the mail on their way from torqueman! I'm always looking for a few more. Ever since I started really searching for these and becoming obsessed with finding them, I have a couple buddies wanting me to find them one too, so the search is on!

BCZ:Well the thought of keeping the brand new 1HP in it's original box is an idea, but not a useful one for your grinder needs or for all of us. i have a better idea for you. put it on your bench or a stand and make it your designated buffer. with the extended arbors we are talking about having Kevin make the work will be farther away from the block to cause very little if any wear. also without the use of the water tray you won't have water and rust damage. plus we all want to see a new 20+ year old grinder on your bench.

by the way thanks for sharing your grinder's list and there are a few guys in Texas that might be able to help you clear out a little space for the new ones to come.:D

Cag:Even if you didn't get a restored Block from TM you did manage to get a couple he touched and removed from his block holding area in his shop so you are Golden.

Mach:did you buy the clean 1/3 HP in Arizona yet?

All:Sander i posted is down to $125 so when it hit's $50 i'm buying it for the experiment unless somebody else near Seattle needs one as is and will pay more for it.

It really seems a shame for that grinder to be homeless......so I arranged to pick it up in Utica.......really don't need it. But now I can give bench grinders out to friends and family for Christmas and birthdays.
Our anniversary is coming up soon. 28 or 29 years...I think it is the bench grinder one...Happy anniversary sweetheart...here's your grinder...you've earned it!

UPDATE!

Ecotec,
Check your email and PM. Seller forgot to bring the grinder for tonight's purchase and pick up by you.

The number is in the email an PM. Call Joe to reschedule for next week or the one after.

No I haven't bought it. I just thought since there was interest here for them I'd let you know I found it. Sedona is over an hour away and I'd have to make arrangements and such. I've got other obligations this weekend.

That's within my 30 min free pick-up area.

Anyone want it?

Owner text'd that it is a 1/2 HP, but no model # given. Maybe that label is too faded.

Let me know, if you want it.

FedEx from 48334 (MI) to 75454 (TX) rates

That was for a 1/2 M-397.19591, 34.7#s, including FedEx packing, 3-day ground ~ $30.00.

For a 1/3 M-397.19580, 28.1#s ~ $28.00.

Mike ;)

SE MI sure has an embarrassment of riches when it comes to these block grinders. They must have sold a ton of them...

TM, please grab this one. I'm full up

I just called him. He doesn't know the size and it doesn't have the quench tray. He will be sending me some photos when he gets home in an hour or two.

Bill

OK.......I stepped in it big time.

This guy is willing to bring it all the way to me, here on the east side of Detroit, from Brighton, MI, about 60 miles. He is going to Corktown tonight anyway. All for $30.

Would someone please stop all these grinders from falling into my lap!

So what do I do with it? Sell it for more on CL? Give it to a relative or neighbor? Use it for a jack stand?

Help!

That is way more than $5 nicer than my $25 1/2hp flat top. I couldn't have walked away from that free delivery either.

found the Hillman #. at lowes.

I used the Hillman's a while back and they fit very nicely. The problem is trying to find 4 of them at the same store, let alone in the same drawer. I had to dig and dig through a couple of drawers to find 4 of them.

Super clean! Still has the stickers on the glass. As others have stated, missing the light cover. Also, is it missing the right side wheel cover? I'm not interested, but $65 with shipping included might be fair. $40 for pickup? Hmmmmm. Those parts are hard to find/fabricate. :dunno:

I believe that the proper storage procedure is to pile them in your back yard with logging chains and padlocks wrapped around them to keep them from wandering away.

No, wait ................ My bad, that's how you're supposed to store all your vises.

That's funny...but too close to true.

I just counted and gathered all mine from around the house, garage and even the van.

Cleared an upper shelf in the garage and lined 6 of them up.

1 is on a table at the hangar, another on a table in the garage and the Baldor on a stand. Rockwell on the bench.

This new 1/2 will help bend that shelf even more.

The 1 HP will be mounted on the bench, if I can bring myself to un-box it.

I almost wish I could get the 1 HP in Wisc., so I don't have to.

Vises are unruly brutes that can't always be trusted. I have a Parker 203 that is fighting me every step of the way during it's restoration. Block grinders are much more sophisticated and, therefore, easier to deal with. :D

Like tm said... when it rains, it pours. There's an ebb and flow to these things. Been kinda dry around here lately.

You could probably sell the un-boxed one on ebay for enough to cover all the others... just a thought.

OK - now I know who swooped in while I was texting the seller, asking for the model number because my 'friend' wanted one like mine.

He was all interested in answering my questions, then all of a sudden like, said he was delivering it to someone who had contacted him just before me.

I'm glad it went to a forum member.

Ha Ha!

Ya gotta be quicker!

This guy liked texting so I had him text me photos and told him it was sold.

Who's your friend?

I might have gone over the legal limit for grinder fishing in MI, and would have to put one on someone else's license.

I for sure have gone over my wife's limit......some time ago.

I've got a 1/2 round top and a 1/2 like that one in the ad, but the newer one is rated higher than the round top. I wonder if it actually is or not.

My 'friend' is anyone that wants the grinder I am after.

I guess, in this case you are; but you also snipped it! :rocker:

I'd have to dig through my older posts (I can't look since the square top is on loan in my dad's garage), but I want to say the square top was 4.x amps and the round top was 3.x.

Oh boy. I'm no expert, but here we go. If a horsepower equals 736 watts according to James Watt, even though that was based on steam. And, watts = amps × volts. And volts is constant. Then, wouldn't higher amps only mean lower efficiency?

Let the debates begin!

The Foley-Belsaw grinders look a lot like the Craftsman 1/3hp and 1/2hp block grinders. Anyone know if they came from the same manufacturer?
