For shipping these Blocks around the country, it would be handy to know the specifics of the carton, like:

weight with grinder
outside dimensions (L x W x H)
thickness of the folded packing (looks like 3-'ply' cardboard)
thickness, specifics of bottom and top packing
carton wall thickness
what the scotch-brite pad is used to cushion

And the specifics of the Block, like:

weight
dimensions (L x W x H)
special conditions, precautions need to pack all items

It was a difficult decision.

And it occurs to me that I am being hypocritical. I can't possibly use all the grinders that I have, so I am being just like the collectors I disdain.

I don't know why, but I'd still like a 3/4 HP.

The Scotch-brite pad hides my address, so prying eyes don't come over when I'm not home, and take all my blocks!

Other info soon. He sent it in the original box BTW, with no extra packing.

I feel the same way, my two blocks are 42 and 46 years old, and I use them about 2-3 times each week. Keep them clean, but use them.

My 1/2 HP flat top is getting some love. Same as my other 1/2HP on the tin. Rustoleum Metallic Silver with Rustoleum Crystal Clear. It's a shame about the label, but I cleaned it up best I could.

ios challenged, so here is the second pic. The rest is going to get Rustoleum Flat Iron with clear coat. It's very close in color to the 1960's block grinders. Here is a sneak peak at one of the side covers.

You did the right thing. It's a Block Grinder, not a Fabergé egg! It's meant to be used. You mentioned that 1HP is scary. Like tear your arm off scary? :scared:

Dust Covers......

Now that I have a nice new block, I want to keep it that way.

Anyone rig up a cover for theirs, to keep the dust off of it?

Could just use the box it came in and see if it fits to turn it over onto it, or find another that does.

What else?

Some kind of a loose drawstring bag?

Starting to feel a little OCD about it.

I at least want some kind of covers for the plastic eye shield lenses......lens cozies?

An old pillow case would work. A plastic bag could trap moisture in a garage setting. Same with a cardboard box, I would think. You want something that can breath a little.

Well, I've never used real big 3PH monster grinders at work. We did have a couple of Dayton (Small and medium) 3PH for sharpening drill bits and wire wheeling the occasional part. I don't know what HP or wheel size they were. And the shop shared space with one of those 12' long bed grinders where the whole bed went back and forth.

But...this ain't no 1/2 Horse block grinder.

When those big 8"x1" wheels spool up, they get your attention!

Maybe not rip your arm off, but certainly mangle your fingers or hand strong. All tools require respect, but this one demands it. It's a serious grinder. Even my 1/2 HP Baldor doesn't seem as strong.

I wonder what it would be like hooked up as 240V?

I would do a video, but I don't think it would do it justice. Maybe running a 1/2 and it side by side. I would have to fix up my electrical first...it really does dim the lights on start up!

BCZ:thanks for sharing your entire process of buying and setting up your brand new 30 year old 1 HP block grinder. as i mentioned before you should make it your designated buffer with all that power and that will help keep the **** and water off of it. also make a Plywood cover with maybe a few cloth covered vent holes on the end and paint on it DO NOT TOUCH.

MacNew:did you see that sweet looking 1/2 HP before i posted the link or were you already working on it before that? good to know it found a good home. also i remember you doing some metal labels that are getting close to a quality finished product. sounds nice.

All:Just an FYI if you are needing a block and can't talk a few members here out of one you might want to pay the shipping for them if you find one out of state. as seen on Ebay several times these don't sell for $50 if spiffed up a little and more like 5 times that amount. happy to say i have 2 nice ones, but i'm still looking for a 1 HP or a nice 3/4 HP one if i can't land a www.burrking.com grinder.

A couple of things that I learned, while assembling this grinder. These may help if you are replacing parts or rehabbing one:

The side covers on this one takes four machine screws per side. It feels like the holes aren't quite fully tapped, or the screws have ends that aren't sharp, or something. So I was careful to screw them in as straight as possible. I started them with a screwdriver, careful not to let it slip and hit the stone. Then continued with a small socket on the hex head. They don't go in very far as the side cover is thick. It worked best to get all 4 started and then take 2 out and install the side cover, twist it to seat it, and reinstall the other 2 and tighten them all down. Otherwise, the last one or 2 screw heads won't line up exactly with the holes, to allow you to push the cover in over the heads. Check the stones for wobble before installing them.

I had never assembled the light on one, and somehow thought the screw on the metal light cover inner shield was the one to use to attach the outer plastic cover to the inner one. There is actually a much shorter slotted one in the bag with the side cover screws.
Then I tried to clamp the light cover to the back of the bulb socket. It actually clamps to it near the front, leaving much of the socket and switch exposed. Instructions could be clearer...but I ain't complaining!

They also give you some spacer washers to use with buffing wheels.

BTW, no date on the base cover, but the SN is much earlier than the one on OWWM.

McB:I almost spit out my dinner on one of those posts you made and all are pretty good. always good to slip in a grinder picture in there every so often too. all your cylinders and grinders seem to be performing nicely.

BCZ: you didn't need to spend so much time putting on those shields because when you turn it into your designated buffer you will have to take them off and put the shields back into the original box. or were you thinking of having it under the bed and putting one of those quarter (or dollar with today's inflation) machines for your bride to pop a coin in and you plug it in and vibrate the entire bed or maybe the whole house with that little 1HP?

Here's one clever guy's idea to catch the grinder 'dust' exiting the exhaust ports on a CM grinder. Vacuum cleaner bags!

I'm going to see if we have some bags left from discarded vacuums, and give this idea a try.
