I am also getting better at finding these - even though I am probably not buying any more. As long as I already set up the notifications I'll post hoping someone else can benefit.

I like the looks of this guy.

I'd consider it, but I'm on a self-imposed & public buying restriction.

Bill - I know that it's asking you to take it home!

Here's one clever guy's idea to catch the grinder 'dust' exiting the exhaust ports on a CM grinder. Vacuum cleaner bags!
12e04eb9-e25e-4ca7-8528-000a2401b856.jpg

I'm going to see if we have some bags left from discarded vacuums, and give this idea a try.

Hmmm... I'd expect a pretty neat fire from that. I wonder what he's grinding?

I can't believe the $80 1/4HP with original stand is still listed. It's almost like getting free grinder with the old-style craftsman stand. :)

To others, but not to me. Had to decide if it would be an object admired on a shelf, or or a tool used for it's intended purpose.

...

I can't imagine having a rare or vintage or collectable tool or car or airplane or boat or any other object, without actually getting to use it.

...

To me, things on a shelf have no value.

...

You said these things, Bill... time to clean up your garage and put stuff to use. What are the chances this machine just collects dust?

I'm using my new-old block grinder to refurb my old-old block grinder. Does that count as putting a grinder to use? I have to admit that it doesn't feel like the most productive of projects in a big-picture kind of way. :headscrat

Brent:nice call on the bags and of course my mind went directly to collecting dust when i saw them. you saw metal, sparks, paper and saw the end result.

McB:at least you are using your Block for a project and when you have both set up they will be ready when you need them.

TM:I like your style, but not sure i would mention to the world that you are willing to Paypal complete strangers because anyone can read these posts. i wouldn't consider a prior block owner a complete stranger, but the new owner might have picked it up at an estate or garage sale. Bee Careful and i really like how you plan your vacations or trips with the tool purchases in route coming and going. i thought i was the only person that did that. you must have married the right gal too.

All:i do like that you all can search the entire US for these blocks and i thought i was doing good by doing 4 states that i travel in. that said you might want to PM the guys on the list with the good finds you are not able to pick up so we get a shot before the lurkers that are not members see them posted here. TM is doing a great job at keeping the list current if you need to add your name. i'm not saying so just because i'm at the top of the list because i probably should be selling grinders and not buying them. by the sounds of BCZ's new 1HP i probably could sell one of my Baldors and replace it with a block.

Ha, I get ya. It's the vise to repair a vise type of deal.

That post was more of a "I'm paying attention, Bill..." type of post. He's got lots (loads) of cool stuff but it's packed to the ceiling and will likely never use it if he doesn't get his rear in gear.

As far as the bags go, I have to be honest, I don't own a rear-exhaust machine anymore. I am not sure sparks come out of the rear of them. I'd need one of you to verify that.

DIF: I think I've burned, broken, popped, and fizzled enough things to have some decent foresight on how bad things can happen. Hahaha.

I agree that it would be great to give "the guys" a shot before the general public but not sure how we would do that. And who gets to decide who is on the list that gets first dibs?

At any rate, anyone here in west central florida? Or in the 919 area code? PM me for some really nice finds that I did not post last night.

Oh yeah. I went after a wood splitting wedge with a coarse stone on my 1/2HP and sparks were flying everywhere. Makes a mess too. I'm looking for an old B&D workmate, so I can move outside when doing stuff like that as Outlaw suggested.

MacNew:I agree there isn't a perfect solution and who's on top of the list shouldn't matter as much as need. post away because the PM system is a bit too awkward for those quick deals. besides our members might get there first with the post and a quick call or email.

just curious and i might be wrong, but didn't you say you bought a grinder up near me in Tacoma, Washington the other night? or did i mis read that? now you are in Florida. or maybe you have several homes. since you don't say on your avitar where you do live you can share or keep it between the members you choose to share it with.

BCZ: i'm thinking if i buy a 1 HP block like you just did and maybe not quite as new i could make it my dedicated wire wheel one and sell one of my Baldor 3/4 HP buffers that i was going to use for that purpose. then use the extra cash to either buy another 1 HP Block or maybe a different tool. Just saying.

Selling a grinder or buffer............Still trying to wrap my head around that idea.

Do you have an actual Baldor buffer? As opposed to a grinder with buffing wheels? Low or high speed?

That's on my list...

Yes, I am in the Seattle area. What I meant was "is anyone on the forum in West Central Florida".

This is why I was asking.

BCZ:I have a few friends and neighbors always asking if i want to sell one or both of my Baldor 3/4 3600 RPM buffers. since i'm shooting for having a different wheel on all of my grinders i'm going to set one of them up with 2 different wire wheels. i also already own 2 or maybe 3 block grinders that will have various wheels on them. Brent has 4 different block grinders with 4 different wheels on them and i was already going that direction before he posted pictures of his.

i know the word "SELL" is pretty hard and which ones do you choose, but i actually sold a Baldor buffer that was 3/4 HP and 1800 rpm so i could buy the one with 3600 rpm. i know i still would like to have that one too, but it is what it is. SELL something and buy something better and instead of the one you are not using taking up shelf space find another good home for it like TM just did with Cag when he shipped a couple to Texas.

MacNew: thanks for clearing that up because this thread moves so quick it's hard to keep up some days. glad you picked up that block in Tacoma because it looked like it was like new.

drivesitfar - Point well taken. I heard back from one of the sellers. They thought scam and stopped replying/texting.

I had followed up in a CL eMail, with an explanation of what I was about (collector/restorer/philanthropist) and that I was from CNY and would be visiting. And I sent pictures and a link to this thread.

Bottom line is I will look it up when I am back east. They did say, there's a slight chance, after seeing all the nice grinders, they'd decide to keep it. :lol_hitti

Even with bad picture it looks the toy $5 imitation of our famous blocks. Go spend your money on the one you posted a few days ago if its still available.

Ok thanks. I had no idea but saw several posts later that someone posted a plastic body grinder that looks the same.

VERY nice one!

Your first?

Third one. First was a 3/4 hp I bought about a year ago at a garage sale. ($50 with original stand...mint) Bought a 1/2 hp this past winter for $40. Nice shape, but missing the eye shields & side covers. I may take the side covers from this one pictured & put them on the 1/2 hp.
This frickin' forum has ruined me on looking for vintage tools.....but it is fun. :lol_hitti
BTW, very nice 1 hp you just got.
One of these days I'll learn how to post pictures. I'm challenged in that area.

They are cardboard wheels... for knife sharpening. I have a set on my 1/3 HP block.

Organ:do you use your knife sharpening wheels much and it said on McNewbie's link there is a compound. do you use yours with compound and where do you buy some?

McNewbie:thanks for taking the time to not only post all the ones for sale, but to also add the pictures. great way to shop for a block. also thanks for the link on the knife sharpening wheels that TM asked about. i love the little public service warning in the ad at the end saying if you are not comfortable holding a sharp blade against a spinning wheel you shouldn't be using these and we take no responsibility. i remember my knife maker friend saying he makes sure to wear steel toe shoes and his welding leathers when putting his knives up against a spinning wheel or belt and he could pick up 100pound weight plates in each hand so a fairly strong guy.

BCZ:that looks sorta like my Baldor buffers, but mine don't take a small city's electrical supply to run my 110 versions.:lol_hitti

All:the Mach1 grinder in the picture has the knife sharpening wheels on it. My baldors look like what BCZ's 1 HP block with Kevin's extensions on it and the guards removed (my thinking)?

macnewbie - Now that is a fine effort! Thank you. :rocker:

I eMailed one seller - the one in the Albany CL.
I hope I don't scare him/her/them off, like others that have stopped responding, don't respond.

Anyway, it is ~ 1 hour trip east from Syracuse, where I'll be (Manlius exactly) visiting my brother and family.

May be we can take a nice ride along the Mohawk River Valley. Site of the Erie and Barge canal systems. Very picturesque and a nice day trip, should it work out.

I'm liking the LI one. Too far, and still no wheel covers, though.
