Do Chocolate Labs taste the same as Chocolate Bunnies ??
Do you start eating the ears, nose, or tail first ?

Well that's never happened before when I clicked on a CL link.

Edit:
Just tried Detroit CL bookmark, then GA > Atlanta. Same warning.
Detroit Metro searches are normal.
Anyone else have trouble?

Ryan, welcome to the forum and this thread.
Thanks for posting this great example of pre-Block CM grinder.
Here are a couple of links you may find helpful as you progress.

You will find a number of restores that are in keeping with the OEM paint and as many that have taken liberty; I am guilty of both.
If you're wondering about 'value' of the grinder for resale my guide line is - condition, location, location.
A pristeen, well cared for, or lightly used complete grinder will alway get me to part with more of my $$.
As for location, location - this influences what is available for local 'shopping' on CL, etc ...
For example, the members in SE Michigan and N Ohio seem to enjoy a steady supply of these Block grinders in various HP and conditions. Some other members are not so lucky and have paid shipping.
Truth be know, I've spent more $$ on gas pulling a grinder from SE MI or OH than it takes to send a grinder from MI to TX, 3-day ground.
Keep us up-to date on your restore.
FWIW - I like to replace the 'consumables' when I open one of these guys up. ie: switch, capacitor, power lead, grinding stones, and bearings.
As an improvement and added safety feature (to protect the grinder), I am adding an in line slow-blow fuse. This will protect the start-up and stator windings, should a start-up relay/centrifugal switch fail in the closed position.
I've got a 397.19400 1/4 hp that I have had since early 70's. Got it used with no shields. Is there a source for them? Anybody make their own?

Finally got around to figuring out how to add pictures. Here are the 3 grinders I got within 24 hours. The first pic includes the 2 I got from Torqueman. The 1/2HP Commercial 7" with rear exhaust and dual voltage was directly from Torqueman's inventory. The 1/3HP Industrial was one I found on craigslist in Michigan that he picked up for me. The 1/2HP has already been put to use, and the 1/3HP is already tore apart for bearing, switch, and wheel replacement, as well as paint.
The second picture is one that popped up on craigslist in Dallas on the day Torqueman's grinders were delivered. It's the exact same model number as the 1/3HP Torqueman sent. I was so excited when I picked it up because it looked like everything was there (guy had it in a few pieces in a crate), that I felt comfortable not starting it. I wasn't in my vehicle, so I didn't have a 1/4" socket to open up the bottom and take a peak either. Got it home to realize it won't start and it has a little bit of rust. Once I get my other 1/3HP back together, I will see what is going on with this one. Anyone have much experience with rust/water damage on these grinders?
I have to admit, I've never restored any old piece of equipment like this. Taking this thing apart and seeing how these grinders work and run has been a fun experience so far. So I apologize ahead of time for some of my rookie questions.
Edit, not sure why photos didn't upload... will try to figure out how to add them.

Hey guys, I just wanted to thank everyone for their help and advice. I ultimately decided to paint my grinder even though it was in really good shape, the dull finish just bothered me a tad bit. I went with a Regal Blue and Gold center.
I used painters tape to mask off the name/data plate and boy oh boy was I upset (at myself) when I saw the painters tape (Blue 3M) partially peeled off some of the data sticker. Luckily in my opinion it peeled off the least important part of the data plate.
As for the replacement bearings, when I cross referenced the Z97502 original bearings, I found these automotive bearings that were not a direct match, but indirect because the inner bore was 4 thousandths of a inch tighter than the original. Needless to say I went to the parts warehouse they let me try out the bearings and they dropped right on to the rotor shaft with very little persuasion as well as into the bearing housings.
I assembled everything and put it to use sharpening some old knifes, and let me tell you I tried to stall the grinder and it was not happening. Im very impressed with the grinder much more than the old delta 1/3hp we had that could be stalled just by looking at it. I can tell this grinder is way more powerful and my search will continue for something in the 1/2-3/4 hp range! Although I feel this grinder will suit all my needs around the house and in the garage, I want something more power to refurbish lol! IM HOOKED!
Enjoy the pictures guys!
You are welcome.I just got a fuse holder today, I was wondering what amperage fuse would you use? I was thinking 5a, but I would like you opinion.
Thanks,
Ryan
Does any have a better picture of the ereplacement.com quench tray? The picture they have online looks like an M. C. Escher drawing - I can't tell up from down. You'll have to look that one up, I'm iOS challenged tonight and can't post any pics.

OK guys. I can't keep up. I post an answer and there' like 4 more posts that are so good.
I gotta get some sleep, the puppy/scaly wag arrives in <6.45 hours!

I still say that is a record! Can anyone else meet or beat it?

TM,
Two more model numbers for your list:
397.19591
1/2hp
115/230 volts. 5.2/2.6 amps
257.191401
1/2hp
115 volts 5.1 amps
Does it matter? I'd replace with a switch socket, and wire it to a hot line instead of a switched line.

I posted this in the garage sale thread but knew I had to share it here too.
I bought my first bench grinder and fortunately it's a made in USA craftsman.I paid $30 for it with the stand. I got it all the way home and realized it didn't have the quench cup like was pictured in the craigslist ad. So I jumped back in the truck and sped back to his house hoping he was still there and it hadn't gotten lost somewhere. He had taken it off to wipe it out and forgot to put it back on.
