Well that's never happened before when I clicked on a CL link.

Edit:
Just tried Detroit CL bookmark, then GA > Atlanta. Same warning.
Detroit Metro searches are normal.

Anyone else have trouble?

Eprey must have paid off Mcafee, Avast doesn't have an issue... ;)

I love dogs! I have always been particularly fond of Labs!

This is the 4th week I have spent M-F, 6:30 AM to 3:30 PM with 3 brown labs.

The 2 pictured earlier in my 'lair' are the 'girls' - Bella (my daughter's 5 year old) and Abby (our 4 year old). Then there's my daughter's pup pup Bo (sp- Beau?).

He turned 11 weeks on Sat (I think it was Sat anyway). He tires them out and they in turn do the same to him.

I am enjoying having them around, even-though it limits me to how long I can divert my attention to other things.

Right now only 1 of his eyes (RH) have changed to brown. I wonder if this is going to be permanent.

Hey guys, I just wanted to thank everyone for their help and advice. I ultimately decided to paint my grinder even though it was in really good shape, the dull finish just bothered me a tad bit. I went with a Regal Blue and Gold center.

I used painters tape to mask off the name/data plate and boy oh boy was I upset (at myself) when I saw the painters tape (Blue 3M) partially peeled off some of the data sticker. Luckily in my opinion it peeled off the least important part of the data plate.

As for the replacement bearings, when I cross referenced the Z97502 original bearings, I found these automotive bearings that were not a direct match, but indirect because the inner bore was 4 thousandths of a inch tighter than the original. Needless to say I went to the parts warehouse they let me try out the bearings and they dropped right on to the rotor shaft with very little persuasion as well as into the bearing housings.

I assembled everything and put it to use sharpening some old knifes, and let me tell you I tried to stall the grinder and it was not happening. Im very impressed with the grinder much more than the old delta 1/3hp we had that could be stalled just by looking at it. I can tell this grinder is way more powerful and my search will continue for something in the 1/2-3/4 hp range! Although I feel this grinder will suit all my needs around the house and in the garage, I want something more power to refurbish lol! IM HOOKED!

Enjoy the pictures guys!

Ryan, welcome to the forum and this thread.

Thanks for posting this great example of pre-Block CM grinder.

Here are a couple of links you may find helpful as you progress.
"Craftsman Block motor Bench Grinders - What's the Fuss (with resource information)"
http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?p=4000536&posted=1#post4000536
"Craftsman pre-Block Grinder resto"
http://tinyurl.com/CM-GJ-Lil-Brownie-115-7566

You will find a number of restores that are in keeping with the OEM paint and as many that have taken liberty; I am guilty of both.

If you're wondering about 'value' of the grinder for resale my guide line is - condition, location, location.

A pristeen, well cared for, or lightly used complete grinder will alway get me to part with more of my $$.

As for location, location - this influences what is available for local 'shopping' on CL, etc ...

For example, the members in SE Michigan and N Ohio seem to enjoy a steady supply of these Block grinders in various HP and conditions. Some other members are not so lucky and have paid shipping.

Truth be know, I've spent more $$ on gas pulling a grinder from SE MI or OH than it takes to send a grinder from MI to TX, 3-day ground.

Keep us up-to date on your restore.

FWIW - I like to replace the 'consumables' when I open one of these guys up. ie: switch, capacitor, power lead, grinding stones, and bearings.

As an improvement and added safety feature (to protect the grinder), I am adding an in line slow-blow fuse. This will protect the start-up and stator windings, should a start-up relay/centrifugal switch fail in the closed position.

I just got a fuse holder today, I was wondering what amperage fuse would you use? I was thinking 5a, but I would like you opinion.

Thanks,

Ryan

Have you visited the Block grinder resource thread? http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showpost.php?p=4000528&postcount=2

Page #2 might have what you are looking for; very bottom of page.

I have bought eye shields from www.eReplacementParts.com , but the last time I checked they were N/A on a few models.

It might be worth a visit to see if another model's will fit. Here's a link to a 1/3 H.P. m-397.19391, to get you started.

These aren't original to Craftsman, but appear to be cheaper than you can buy raw materials to fabricate a pair:

A better picture can be found here with other vintage grinders:

Yes, everyone needs to take a look at the 3-phase 7hp 14" monsters on that thread. One of them weighs in at 1150 pounds! :scared:

Does any have a better picture of the ereplacement.com quench tray? The picture they have online looks like an M. C. Escher drawing - I can't tell up from down. You'll have to look that one up, I'm iOS challenged tonight and can't post any pics.

Finally got around to figuring out how to add pictures. Here are the 3 grinders I got within 24 hours. The first pic includes the 2 I got from Torqueman. The 1/2HP Commercial 7" with rear exhaust and dual voltage was directly from Torqueman's inventory. The 1/3HP Industrial was one I found on craigslist in Michigan that he picked up for me. The 1/2HP has already been put to use, and the 1/3HP is already tore apart for bearing, switch, and wheel replacement, as well as paint.

The second picture is one that popped up on craigslist in Dallas on the day Torqueman's grinders were delivered. It's the exact same model number as the 1/3HP Torqueman sent. I was so excited when I picked it up because it looked like everything was there (guy had it in a few pieces in a crate), that I felt comfortable not starting it. I wasn't in my vehicle, so I didn't have a 1/4" socket to open up the bottom and take a peak either. Got it home to realize it won't start and it has a little bit of rust. Once I get my other 1/3HP back together, I will see what is going on with this one. Anyone have much experience with rust/water damage on these grinders?

I have to admit, I've never restored any old piece of equipment like this. Taking this thing apart and seeing how these grinders work and run has been a fun experience so far. So I apologize ahead of time for some of my rookie questions.

I'm not the only iOS challenged member tonight. Btw, "Torqueman's Inventory" is also known as "Torqueman's Lair". :lol_hitti

That 1/2hp 7" rear vent is a nice grinder. Enjoy!

Very nice! I'm a big fan of original paint schemes, but these things look really cool in custom colors. You are right, time for at least a 1/2hp 257 or 397.

You are welcome.

Nice looking grinder.

What brand paints did you use? I like the combination.

I am going to use the information from the following label as a guide to estimate an answer. (I encourage you to register and ask the same question at OWWM.com - Everything Electrical {This forum is for the discussion of everything electrical with relation to old wood and metalworking machinery.})

1HP257191600LabelsmallP1020993.jpg

So, it says:
257.191600
1 HP
115/230 Volts
6.8/3.4 Amps
Time Delay 15 Amp Fuse Class B Cont.

15 A Fuse/6.8 Amps = ~a 2.2 'factor'
-----------
The sample of 1/4 HP Labels reviewed:
115.7561
1/4 HP
4.5 A

115.19500
1/4 HP
4.5 A

397.19401
1/4 HP
3.6 A

397.19300
1/4 HP
3.6 or 3.8 A Label is not clear

397.19400
1/4 HP
2.5 A

397.19501
1/4 HP
3.2 A

2.5 - 4.5 A (m-115.756 & 115.19500)

4.5 A * (~ 2.2 'factor') = 9.9 A

I would see if there's a 7.5 A Time Delay Fuse, or a 10 A TDF.

I'd like to hear what OWWM has to say, they have a real wealth of knowledge there.

Can you take a straight on as possible and close up shot of your label?

Thanks, and again nice job.

BTW - there are direct replacement bearings available. They are measured and sold in mm dimensions. If your grinder housing gets too hot to the touch, the bearings may be turning on the shaft/casting bore. LocTite sells a bearing compound, if that does happen.

I will when my order arrives. They have to be un-loaded from the SLOW BOAT FROM CHINA!

Ha, do I feel old. Use to be what people said; now they have the biggest and fastest container ships!

I still say that is a record! Can anyone else meet or beat it?:thumbup:

...

The restore of Go-Blue! shows a lot of internal rust damage. http://tinyurl.com/Go-Blue-Block-Grinder

Don't power up the grinder if it does not rotate, the start-up winding can be damaged.

PM me or post any questions you may have. Pics are helpful, too many are almost enough.

Best of luck.

Glad the cross country trip went well for those two Blocks.

Mike

Another thought - the power cord and/or switch could have an open circuit. If it does not have a lamp, put one on the same circuit and see if it dims when it is briefly switched on. If it does, it may be 'hung/bound' up. Rust, debris, or the start-up circuit/winding not energized. If it humms. try giving it a good spin. The start-up circuit de-energizes (no longer is helping) at about 3/4 rated operating speed.

Cag:Nice to see you have started a block family now in your garage and just bee careful because they are like rabbits and will soon turn into 10 or 20 if you don't monitor their activity.

TM:nice crew of guard dogs for your blocks. my grand dog went back home last week after 2 weeks of grandparents walking and playing with him and i heard he didn't eat much the first couple days. he either missed us because my daughter works too much or he was still full of the dozen tennis balls he chewed up. love sending the grandkids back home to their parents after playing with them.

McB:I'm not sure I'd sell the original Craftsman stand by itself that has my 1/3 HP split phase block on it, but i might if it doesn't sell as that package. i bought it from the 80 year old original owner and it's in pretty reasonable shape since he basically just worked on his own stuff.

ALL:here's the huge old Craftsman I shot a picture of in the back of my honda that has bumped a block out of my shop. I'm not even sure of the specs and i am out of town so won't be able to get better pics until this weekend. also pictures of the block with the "cool" craftsman stand that I'm letting the guys on this thread PM me with an offer if you might want it before i post in the classifieds or on Craigslist. I live in Seattle and end up in Portland or Eastern Washington a couple times a month usually. shipping is an option and just not sure which way is best for either the grinder or the stand.

Light socket question. The light socket on my 1/2hp 6" 1983 flat top (257.191401) needs to be replaced. The one that on there is broken and looks like it never had a switch. Therefore, the light comes on when the grinder is turned on and turns off when the grinder is turned off. My 1/2hp 7" commercial has a separate light switch on the socket and I can turn the light on and off independent of the grinder being on or off. A nice option.

My question. What is the standard configuration for my 1983 flat top? Light switch or no light switch on the light socket?

McB - It depends if you want to be honest to the original design.

The ones I've seen are powered through the power switch and turn on with the grinder.

But, some owners like the option of turning the light on independent of the grinder. This is done by adding a switched lamp socket.

Both are available at most hardware stores.

I posted this in the garage sale thread but knew I had to share it here too.

I bought my first bench grinder and fortunately it's a made in USA craftsman. I paid $30 for it with the stand. I got it all the way home and realized it didn't have the quench cup like was pictured in the craigslist ad. So I jumped back in the truck and sped back to his house hoping he was still there and it hadn't gotten lost somewhere. He had taken it off to wipe it out and forgot to put it back on.:)
