Here is a picture for the Foley-Belsaw:

This price is pretty reasonable. Check out the price for a new one on the Foley-Belsaw website. By the way, with two college students to fund, I'm not in the market for this one. :(
Stop dangling CRACK in front of a recovering addict!

I'm driving right past Cleveland tomorrow, bright and early; I wll not stop! I will not stop, I will .... nnn stop .... eeemmmemmmee :eyecrazy:

McB:take it easy on TM because he just shipped off a block to Cag and he still needs to fire up his new Baldor buffer. Besides it's not a "real" block and he already has several on his trip that are paid for to pick up.:lol_hitti

McNew:i was halfway out the door to go pick up that old Craftsman for the shields and water tray for the BIGUN i just picked up until i saw that the picture wasn't the actual grinder. also i think he mentions that he doesn't have the water tray. thanks for posting it up because i might have missed it if it was one i could have used for parts.

This is amazing. First of all, I have an account for Grainger's through our employee discount program and maybe that helped. So, I ordered these at 9:30 THIS morning:

http://www.grainger.com/product/DAY...?cm_mmc=PJX-_-GraingerBrand-_-43737-_-Generic

and they were delivered to my house at 3:30 THIS afternoon. And that was with free shipping! I'm not sure what to say.

I'll have to fabricate some brackets, but for $15 ( I got a small discount on top of it) and same day delivery they look great.

She gave you a block grinder? That's probably considered a marriage proposal in some cultures.

Flanges.......

The 6 grinders are missing everything that mounts on the shaft on each side.

I can source the nuts, even the reverse thread ones locally (They are 5/8" x 11 and 18TPI), but I need pairs of flanges for each side of each grinder.

Most are Dayton 3/4 HP with shafts that take 5/8" nuts. There is a shoulder on the shafts.

Where to get the flanges to hold wire wheels or buffs?

Are there generic ones that are inexpensive?

I know machine specific ones like for the Baldor can be expensive. $20 for EACH (4 needed per machine) cast aluminum one and $12 for each stamped sheet metal one.

I've never seen a stand like this one I got either.

I've come across a pedestal stand for my grinder so I am looking to unload this pictured stand. It fits the block grinder perfectly. I'm not looking to sell it. Instead, I'm looking to trade for a light and quench tray...and will pay a bit on my end to even out the deal.

This thread grows too fast.

Just picked up this 1/3 HP for $12. Spins like a top. Guy I bought it from told me "It's just an old craftsman and not worth the 30 minute drive to pick it up."

Not sure if this has been listed, but this Block has been on Madison, WI C-List for about a week:

That is a steal right there, looks pristine, somebody go get it!

I'm glad you got that, I saw the ad and thought the asking price was a typo. I haven't had the couple hours round trip it would have taken me to make the drive or I would have picked it up.

No kidding. I'm still baffled by that $3 Starrett. But, for every one of those sellers, there are 10 others that think they own the Venus di Milo of old iron.

The guy just wanted the stuff gone, and this was the second day of the sale, to boot. Whe you need a house emptied, and you need it gone now...

But I also think he was thinking "this isn't worth much so price to sell..." He told me he grew up using that vise as a kid. :dunno: To many people, old tools aren't worth anything. :wtf: I'm just happy to find these people once in a while. :pimpflash

The best part is when those items end up in the hands of people who understand what they have. I hate to hear the stories of hearing tees things ending up in scrap yards and dumps - only to be replaced by over-optimized made in who-knows-where ****.

I thought that several years ago with a pristine older Craftsman vise. I had two and didn't need both, so I threw it out in the garage sale for $5, and it sold quick! I didn't realize what vises were worth at that time! It was just one of the common little ones, but still worth more than $5...

Having said that about the "made in who-knows-where ****", I have picked up some very good, very reasonably priced tools from the big-box stores that worked great and didn't break the bank. The first that comes to mind is an $8 Kobalt coping saw with 3 blades. $8! It's not all bad.

Very true. I have my share of ítems that were purchased because I could not afford or justify the cost of the "real" thing and which have pleasantly surprised.

In all fairness it's not about where things are made but about the quality standard that the factory is held to. Harbor Freight (to pick on one vendor even though they also have a bunch of jewels hiding on their shelves) items are not cheap because they are made in who-knows-where, they are cheap because they are made to be cheap.

The iDevice on which I type this was also made in China, but Foxconn is simply held to a high standard.

By the same measure, not everything that is US-made is better, cars are the easiest example. I would much rather drive a European or Japanese car than a Ford (and arguably Ford makes the best of the Detroit-based cars). A Tesla? Different story altogether. :)

Well I am the pound new owner of this grinder. I picked it up last night. Seller was a nice guy, helped me load it up with the stand, the thing was heavy as hell. He wouldn't go below $70, but I think it was fair. Hell, I either had to pay it or say pass, and we all know how that goes. He said he paid $85 for it 6 years ago and doubts he ran it an hour total in all the years he's owned it, he purchased it from an older gentleman who used it lightly as well. I consider it $50 for the grinder and $20 for the stand, or $60 for the grinder and $10 for the stand, whatever, you get the idea. The whole unit must weigh 80-100 pounds, solid steel plate for the bottom of the stand. The grinder is in pretty good shape, dirty but all the pieces are there and nothing broken. I will start by just disassembling and cleaning it all and then see what it looks like before going any further. This should be fun. Glad to be a part of the club. How do I tell how old this thing is? Model number is 397.19591. Also, what is the difference between the 1/2 hp models that say "Craftsman Commercial" versus those that do not, besides the sticker?

Biscuit:congrats on your block purchase and however you figure out the stand value you did very good. i can't tell you for sure on the date, but it might be either on the bottom plated or if you take that plate off on the other side of that plate.

as far as the difference between the commercial version and the regular ones go you have the better of the two because TM did a little investigating and saw that there are more or thicker copper wires on the commercial ones. sorry i can't remember which was the difference, but you can also re wire yours for 220 if you wish to and have an extra 220 plug to use in your garage or shop.

as far as i know we haven't had a member of the block boys wire one up at 220 and i might when i get my shop back in order. i'm still cleaning up from the wet spring here in the NW where i was just dropping stuff off just inside the door of my shop and running to get out of the rain.

good luck

Congratulations! Nice commercial. My 397.19591 has plastic eye shields like yours, but has a metal toggle switch like the 397.19590 model with the glass eye shields. My guess would be that mine is late 60's and yours is very early 70's before the flat tops came along. Enjoy it! These grinders make short work of getting through metal.

By the way, summer is getting in the way of my 257.191401 restore. Everything is re-painted, but assembly is taking a longer than I thought. I should have pictures up next week or so.

I almost wish I hadn't found this forum. On the one hand it's comforting to know that there are a bunch of other sickos who aren't completely rational when it comes to tools, while on the other hand I'm weak, and found this thread. I have never seen one of these before, and of course, decided I needed one, so I found this on Ebay:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/111383188676?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1439.l2649

I just received it an gave it a quick wipe down. It runs great and takes over three minutes to wind down. I'm pretty sure the discs are the ones that came with the grinder, and passed the ring test. Overall it's a great grinder, but there was one thing that wasn't evident from the ebay pictures. Someone had hen scratched some **** on the top of the grinder.

I'm looking forward to learning a lot from you guys.

Here are some pics:
