let's see your craftsman block grinders

Alpine: I have to agree with the guys that wire wheeling the tool rests and maybe deburring wheel will really make that awesome paint job pop. Looks good so far. how does it run or maybe you already told us?

That powder coated block sure looks nice. Would look even better if you threw a wire wheel on it for a couple minutes and shined up those fasteners.

Yes, that's the plan. Thank you. This is physically how it looked like when I bought it. I have worked on it electrically to get her working. BTW, the center silver portion is also powder-coated.

The toolrests are powder coated too, although, the picture doesn't show it so.

What do you guys suggest to get the horizontal bar all prettied up? Maybe a scotch-brite wheel.

I guess I need a gooseneck light to go with it. It has the hole in the back but didn't come with a light.

AP: as i mentioned in my post wire wheeling, scotchbrite pads or deburring wheels if you have access to a friend's work great for shining up steel. check out the vise repair 101 thread and lots of posts telling how they shined up their raw steel.

or you can paint them silver or black like your block since you did such a great job doing that.

as far as a light i haven't bought one without one yet, but I've seen some of the block guys use desk lamps and just take off the base to make one work with your block. there are many examples of them in this thread.

good luck and if you don't want to make a paper badge Jack from 12 gauge garage was offering to have some metal ones made for members that needed one and he had a nice special added safety warning on his. i'm not sure he is still offering that kind gesture so you'll have to ask.

Thanks, its fresh from the flea market and I havnt even attempted to clean it yet. It's all complete with a buffing wheel and wire wheel on it. It fires right up I wasn't sure what these go for but thought 30 was fair price been I hear so many rave reviews about these grinders.

This is a 3/4 hp block in rough cosmetic condition but runs good. Looks like I will be using my NOS 7" wheels pretty soon!

Aargh no update on USPS tracker since Tuesday last showed still in Michigan.

Well this is no longer funny the 3/4 HP block has gone missing, Koditten is trying to find out what happened to it.

Congrats! Since your glass is in good shape, I would suggest cleaning it, masking and painting around it. Those tabs always break when trying to remove it. I should have done that on mine. If you do break them off, a bead of silcone works pretty well to hold the glass in. Or course I'm assuming you are going to clean it up. Aren't you?

It will probably end up costing more than the grinder, but this lamp might look pretty cool on your new toy.

I went to look at a Craftsman drill press last night and while looking at the drill press, I spied this beauty on the self in the back of the shed. I knew I had to have it when I saw it. It is dirty but it is in really good condition. It's a model 397.19590 1/2 HP.

DIF, I've had probably four blocks for personal use over the years and the only issues I've ever had with any of them is the old wiring vibrating loose from their solder connection to a spade which is easily fixed within moments. Never once has any of them needed a serious repair to keep running well.

I have no interest in a nice looking grinder for my own use, they only get ugly. I keep the beat up ones for myself, the ones with missing parts, faded labels, cracks, etc.

I even fired up the frozen BlockMeister and it laughed at the cold. I guess there isn't much to break on these when you get right down to it.

The metal tabs break-off very easily. The next pair I will try heating the tabs prior to bending them.

I prefer replacing the glass, due to the imbedded metal, but that runs the risk of breaking the tabs.

The CA 3/4-HP m-397.19450 Block arrive today, 1-day early.

Funny though, FedEx usually knocks/rings and just splits. This time he waited, but no package. He said he just b=needed to check the address, which was off by 1 digit.

As he brought it out of the truck, I noticed the box was really trashed. Well, I opened it while he waited and noted there was NO packing. As you'll see in the following pics. it was bolted to a 1/2" piece of plywood and came out just a little worse for the trip.

Anyway, here are the pics. as it arrived today.

The plastic lamp cover didn't survive. New one from SearsPartsDirect is on it's way ($11.43, tax & shipping included).

The metal lamp cover is a bit bent, but useable.

The LH spark arrester was jammed into the stone. It will get a close inspection, ring test, and most likely replaced.

It starts a bit slow and growls more than my other 3/4-HP or 1-HP Blocks, the stones run true {luckily the arbor/shafts don't seem to be impacted by the impact(s)}, and it runs-on an extraordinarily long time.

The other damage I noticed is the lamp socket knob is bent. A new one is on it's way from Amazon. {Pass & Seymour 918CC10 Medium Base Replacement Socket 250-watt 250-volt, $7.03 & Free shipping}

I haven't decided weather to file a damage claim. For 1 thing, the seller used a UPS box. He did call from UPS to say they didn't use accounts to ship. He had misunderstood and had gone there instead of FedEx.

I am thinking he took it to FedEx in the single walled UPS box and the Block was shipped as-is, no FedEx prep. and packing.
