ALL: so non NOS 1/2 HP blocks sell for over $400 doesn't surprise me too much. these are awesome machines. i own one that i paid half that much for with a stand almost a year ago after spending a fair amount of time searching for one and i'm not sure I'll ever sell it.

Fireman: that brown/gold color combo is awesome on your block and stand. very nice work and happy to hear you found a material to work for underneath your stand.

Also I would to thank torqueman for the stand !

TM is giving out stands!? Count me in! lol

TM, if you have shipped one of these stands, has it been roughly the same cost to ship the stand as to ship a grinder? I purchased 2 grinders from you back when you first started shipping these guys out, and I've been on the lookout for a stand over the past couple months.

Looks like a 1/2hp

No, it's 1/3 hp. Says so right on the box label. Of course, I haven't actually seen the grinder itself and it's plate, so perhaps you're correct. I certainly wouldn't be upset if it were 1/2 hp.

I'll have pics of the entire beast tomorrow. I won't be assembling it though, as I've got to sort out where it's going to go. I have a Craftsman Variable Speed 6" Grinder that's mounted to my lathe cart, that's going to stay there because it's a slow speed, which I prefer for woodworking tools. I've got this odd notion that B.O.B. will soon be sprouting a grinder and big vise, but I've got to noodle on the idea a bit more.

My dream grinder is a Baldor 8" Slow Speed with one, perhaps two, CBN wheels. Again, for woodworking. That 6" Craftsman VS would be looking for a new home!

Drives,
I didn't know you had such a stout machine on an original stand. Very nice!

Harley: that looks like a commercial block grinder and at least a 1/2 HP on an original crowntop stand. at that price somebody needs to talk the seller into shipping it. or Jake might be close enough. Jake????

Not me, it's too far out of my travel range. Try Joe.

I figured it was pre block "mail box " I have sent the seller a email. ...

Nope, that's a full block. Probably early 70's. The "Princess Leia" buns are a giveaway that it's a later model, but the round top says that it's the earlier design.

ALL: maybe TM contacted the seller even before Harley posted it???:dunno: He does seem to have a good bead on these blocks.

it looked like a keeper that's for sure and there is someone happy with his new grinder purchase tonight.

Well, I mentioned before that I would be culling the herd of blocks to give one to my son. Well my herd must of formed its own government agency, it just can't stand any type of reduction in force. Just like true government, cut a little and replace with more. Translated: I'm giving the son a 1/2 HP, I just so happen to run across a 3/4 HP today, not sure what provoked me to buy, but here is my latest $ 25 block. First one I've bought that doesn't have the tool rest though.
c00207de95106277313660c162cf7486.jpg

I guess for every 1/4 HP I get rid off, Ill replace with 1/2 HP.

Yep, its called "upgrading"!

Some guys do it with trophy wives, you do it with Grinders!! I think you probably have the better end of that deal, all things considered!

I'm missing the lamp shade to my 397.19580 and somehow my entire garage feels so incomplete without it. Weird, I know.

So, the story:

On Wednesday, I see type "grinder" into the search function of our local equivalent to Craigslist. (Yes, we have CL here too, but only noobs use it.) Up pops the usual assortment of angle grinders, a surface grinder or two, and a massive quantity of grain grinders :willy_nil, some electric, some hand cranked. Also returned were a few bench grinders, including a Craftsman 1/3 hp grinder, with a pic of the label. The text said it had belonged to the seller's father.

It was near the end of my workday, so I called the guy, caught him on the way home. He said that somebody else had texted his wife, and thus he wasn't sure if it was sold yet or not, but when he got home he'd know. I asked him to call me back when he knew. Clock was ticking down towards 9pm, still no call, so I called him. He told me he'd got caught up in doing a bunch of other stuff and hadn't gotten home until quite recently, but it hadn't sold. The other guy was supposed to be contacting him again, but no contact yet. He asked me how much I was offering, and I said "I'd take it for his asking price, and could pick it up tonite or the next evening." "Tonite is good, after 10" he said, so I set off about a half hour later to find his place (about 9 miles away), and get there a bit after 10pm. I didn't want to wait in case the other guy chimed back in.... See the box, nice, just as in the first pic. I hand over three Jackson's, put the grinder on the passenger seat of my truck, and head back home.

As promised earlier, pics of the packaging:

In the last pic, the grinder is upside down, as I had turned the box over to remove it FROM the grinder.

Re: packaging part deux

Additional packaging pics.

I have returned it to it's box for now, pending locale determination. If anybody has any additional questions on the packaging, let me know.

The grinder was produced sometime after 11/76, as that's the publication date for the manual.

Biker -

I'm with you gmc - while I have no problem changing the colors, using belt/disk attachments, buffing arbor adapters; I don't know what I'd do with a NIB Block.

I mean, it's a tool. Tools are to be used, but a NIB! :willy_nil

Yesterday morning I drove from my home in Peachtree City, GA to an event in Tallapoosa, GA. On the way I passed through the very small town of Whitesburg, GA. As I passed through Whitesburg, I noticed a "Picker" type store called Gloria's Country Collectibles in what I think was the old train depot.

On the way home I passed through Whitesburg again. On a whim I decided to stop at Gloria's and look around. As I pulled into the dirt/gravel parking lot I thought I may have made a mistake. From that vantage point I thought it just might be nothing but old nik-naks.

I got out of my car and promised my wife I wouldn't be long. I walked up onto the porch and found... tools!

As I walked the length of the porch I found buckets of wrenches, screwdrivers and such; much like one would see at a pawn shop. Then, on a table, I saw an old bench grinder of unknown make and next to that was...

...a Craftsman 397.19400 1/4-HP Block Grinder on a Baldor pedestal.

"Well", I thought, "look at that."

I went inside and looked around. There were some more tools inside as well as other stuff I wasn't interested in.

I asked a gentleman that was behind the counter about the grinder on the pedestal. He indicated a price and I asked if the grinder worked. He answered in the affirmative and got one of his "Go-For's" to get a frayed extension cord so that I could see the grinder run.

Assured that the grinder was operable, I returned and talked price. A deal was made and then I returned with a smile on my face to my suspicious spouse waiting in the SUV.

This flashed up on craig's on Friday and I dropped a conference call to go get it. It was only about 15mins from the office! I also have the quench tray, just forgot to put it in for the pic.
Runs down for a least a minute. Would be more, but the wire wheel on the left side rubs the housing a bit and slows it down. Pretty stoked with that find, though a 1hp would have made it even sweeter.
