Oilhammer: so you bought the $65 commercial block with stand in Massachusetts? nice or should i say very nice.

SD: I'd swap you a craftsman stand for the Baldor stand if you were closer, but shipping would kill that deal before we started talking about it. nice find and a good price too.

OH: well you are right, but funny coincidence. is yours a 1/2 or 1/3 HP and commercial or just a good old Block? it looks like it has all the parts so hopefully after tweaking it a bit then it will run for another 50 years in your garage.

also it looks like you are not only a new block member, but a new member and happy to have another member that knows quality.

welcome to both our groups (GJ and the Blockheads)

BikerDad: thanks for showing the packing of your NOS block. fire it up and make a YouTube video and let's see how a new 50 year old block runs. PLEASE??

It's a 1/3. I've only seen 1/3rds and 1/4's show up for sale here. There are two sweet blocks at one of my client's shops, but they aren't selling....yet. A sharp eye will notice the vise in the pic. That's just the tip of the iceberg in this place. There are something like 30 wiltons in there, rockwell drills, craftsman drill presses, unisaws, you name it.

I have a bunch of old stuff. I just tend to surf more than post. :)

That old Block is holding up well.

Looks like it's cared for, the stone is dressed, it's painted, and eye shields have been fitted; although, the RH one needs a new plastic lens.

And how about that CM vise! What a pair. This a true testament to the quality of these vintage CM tools, to hold up to a production environment for so long.

Nice picture.

I will give you a you **** for that score. Look on Ebay for those Baldor grinder stands. They sell for $175-250. I am guessing they are more substantial than the Craftsman ones.

WhoWhatNow,

Thanks! Yes it was "the package" that made the deal.

I was aware of the eBay prices for the Pedestal... and the grinder appeared to be in very good condition. Over lunch I fired up my smart phone and showed the spouse the various eBay prices for these 2 items.

She's pretty good about it. I think, justifiably so, that she's wondering when I'm going to monetize all these "good deals" as opposed to just filling the basement with "stuff". Ha!

...but it wasn't one of those cases where, when the subject of price comes up, the seller hesitates and, almost embarrassed, says, "15 dollars?"

Best regards,

Scott

I get the monetizing question a lot too. Of course I have been filling the garage, shed, basement and attic with "stuff" so I can understand where she is coming from.

SB: that 1HP is very interesting. i can't say I've seen an extension like the one on the right wheel ever. is it too far for you to drive and pick up for yourself because that would look awesome on your new Baldor stand and you can sell the little block to impress your wife.

DrivesItFar,

It's a ways to make a special trip and another grinder might put her over the edge. I bought a Baldor 8-inch on a pedestal a month or so ago so I'd best not go there. Frankly, this block grinder is probably fairly priced and I'd only be heading up to get it if they dropped the price by an order of magnitude. Ha!

I posted it here for 2 reasons:

1. To alert someone in the area to the ad (probably unnecessary)

2. To let folks here see the accessories. I don't know that much about these grinders but I thought the attachments looked "different". Maybe my instincts were correct in this case.

Now that I look at the picture more closely, there may be a stand under the plywood as well.

Best regards,

Scott

All: pretty sure the 1HP block has a stand, but it isn't an original Craftsman stand.

SB: your instincts were correct that the attachments are not the usual type ones we see. i'd like to hear from others, but the extension on the right that moves out about another 8 inches or so beyond the regular spot for a wheel is very unique.

I think it's an original stand... color's right and you can see one of the square lobes of the base peeking out... don't think the thing you see sticking out the front is part of the stand... notice how it's off center, to the right of where the grinder's bolted down.

Organ: if you can get the seller to send you a picture of the stand that would help, but i'm still about 99% that is not an original Craftsman block stand. it does look like the metal piece that probably is a water tray holder is in the middle of the stand.

not a big deal either way and just my 2 cents.

ALL: i have the contact # for the seller of this 1HP block in case any of you need it just PM me. he's only owned it 3 days so a flip, but it looks like an awesome grinder and some cool accessories. i'm going to pass, but if i was local it would be very temping even to a guy that has 20 grinders like i do.

Organ: I did get pictures of the stand so you and everybody can see what it is. it's not a Craftsman stand, but looks sturdy and I've sold these for $25-50 because they work great.

Here's a Baldor polisher with pedestal for $200... Atlanta area http://atlanta.craigslist.org/wat/tls/4934817325.html

That's a very good price for a Baldor buffer, and the stand for free! However; for that $$, I wouldn't be surprised if it is 220 V and 3-phase.

They are very good stands, I got one with a Baldor. It is very heavy and sturdy. $25-50 is a bargain.

GJ does it again. Pretty new member and I started on here because of the great VISE thread. Landed in this thread because one of the vises I purchased came on the original, square-base pedestal stand, and I'd like to find out if these are fairly rare (as the seller claimed) or just getting harder to come by because folks are hanging on to them. Not sure it is OK to ask but, if so, what is the approximate value?

That's 2 questions in 8 hours about CM stands (1 private eMail).

Anyway, I've seen them on eBay for $90 and more, plus shipping.

I have sold more than 1 with more rust than the one above for $55 + shipping (including materials).

But, as with real estate, a lot depends upon location also.

Not as common as the grinders themselves... but not exactly rare. Once you start looking, they pop up pretty often. They are sought after...

A 1hp for $100? Someone grab that thing. :3gears:

I posted about that one earlier. I've tried both e-mail, twice. and phone with no response. Still looking for someone in the Redding area to help out with this one.

Has anyone posted this one yet? I'd like that quench spray and rest more then grinder.

Ss,

FYI, almost all of the 3/4hp and all of the 1hp came with big quench trays/bases and integrated tools rests. I think there is one split-phase 3/4hp flat top that didn't. The older ones were all cast iron and weigh a ton. The flat tops, like the one in that add, are stamped and the base isn't nearly as thick. They are cool which is why you should grab one when you get the chance. :D

My 257.191500 3/4hp did not come with the big base and integrated rests apparently. It has the two piece rests like a 1/2hp Commercial..

Picked up a 1/3 HP Model #397.19580 for $50. Date underneath says Nov. 29 1968. The couple selling it inherited a garage full of old tools and I could have spent a lot but I stayed in control. It's in excellent condition other than some scratches on the tag and missing 2 rubber feet. A plus is that I didn't realize that's it's industrial rated.

What's the difference of the industrial vs standard rates?

Here are the pics.

I'm also getting a 1/2 1970s model with a stand for $75 on Friday. Yes I'm addicted and it's all Garage Journal's Fault. :)

Second hand store find for $60 with the stand. 1/2 HP 6" Craftsman block grinder. Stand is a heavy truck rim attached to a steel pipe with flat steel welded on top. It runs smooth, I just need to find a tool rest.

I've got a 1/2hp blockhead that works great, but is missing the metal framed eye shields and mounts. Does anyone know of an affordable source for replacement?
Replacement eye shields (metal framed with 'glass' and all plastic) are not available - AFAIK. You may want to check these 2 sources, though.
eReplacementParts.com
http://www.ereplacementparts.com/craftsman-grinder-parts-c-158286_159871.html
SearsPartsDirect.com
http://www.searspartsdirect.com/partsdirect/brands-products/Craftsman-Parts/Grinder-Parts?page=1

Note: Try various/similar model numbers if your specific model is not listed.

By 'mounts' do you mean the 4 'rubber' feet that go between the Blocks and mounting surfaces?
Some members (myself included) find these a close match.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/LAU-38-2209...145?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item232e055699

Also, follow this link for more information (and the link in my signature line).
http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showpost.php?p=4466342&postcount=3566

Please, let us know if you do find a source for replacement eye shields, plastic or metal.

I believe a GJ member recently found a pair of metal framed eye shields on eBay.
