If it won't pull off, I'd cut most of the way through it with a dremel cut-off wheel. Then pry it apart with a screwdriver until it splits and opens up to get it off.

Look what followed me home yesterday.
I need a grinder , not a buffer so I guess I have to decide if I want to look around for a donor machine as I am missing the eye shields, tool rests, and spark arresters. I guess I'll pull it off the stand today and see how she looks inside.
Depends on the needs or application. Minimum cost will be $500 in parts to build a stand-alone machine. Many users are very happy with a $200 Multi-Tool adapter on their existing bench grinder. Or a $200-300 Kalamazoo.
Nice job! I like the colors. After a long time spent following this thread, I finally bought a 1/2 HP block grinder offered for sale locally. It was in decent but dirty shape, and was complete with the exception of the quenching tray. Although I have a decent bench grinder, I wanted to have a dedicated buffing setup. With the great advice and wealth of information offered in the forum, I was able to refurbish the block grinder and set it up as a buffer without the wheel guards and eyeshields.
Special thanks to Torqueman 2002 for his help and assistance!
No way, with a little sourcing (used motor, repurposed contact wheel) you can get in right around $200.
I guess if you already had the pulleys, bearings, shafts, belts, hardware, steel tubing and bars. Plus access to cutoff saw and mill. And can weld. Then I guess so....

You are making way too much out of this, no need for a welder or mill. A hacksaw and a drill press can easily build you one. Pulleys aren't that expensive. Look up no weld grinder plans. The biggest cost if purchasing new components is the motor and contact wheel.
If I only had extra pulleys lying around I could just make the belt sander attachment for next to nothing like the guy on jalopy journal did.
Has anyone made replacement parts for these grinders using a 3-D printer?

Kahuna, you got that grinder from lake Isabella (spellings)? I had my eye on it and today the cl ads was deleted. You ****!Look what followed me home yesterday.

I actually only bought it for the stand. The grinder looked to be in pretty rough shape. Paid $40. Figured I could resell the grinder itself.

Unfortunately, she spins like a top and after a quick 20 minute Simple Green facial isn't looking so bad aside from the giant rust spot.

I finally got my first CM block grinder. It is a bit sad and will need new glass but it runs great. I rescued it from a basement at an estate sale and looks to have been idle for many years. And to boot it was the last day of the sale so all was 50% or more off. Got it for $7.50.

It will need at least the left side nut and one wheel flange. Worst case if it doesn't hold as is, a good suggestion was to turn the arbor down and re thread like the 1/2hp units. I'll try to get a file on end flats tomorrow.
I recall you saying it was 'a sad little grinder', but the pictures are something else. What did they do to it? Wow.
The strange part is the nut for that side is pretty much smooth inside. You have to push and thread for it to somewhat catch. There was supposed to be flats on the end to help secure the arbor with a wrench while loosing the nut. Unfortunatly someone used pliers or the like instead of a wrench and destroyed both ends of the shaft. The right hand side is salvageable, threads and all. I'm going to try to go at the left hand threads with a chisel and file to see if I can raise them enough for a new nut to catch. Worst case I could turn it down like the 1/2hp units are, but then all the 8" wheels would need a bushing. Not sure how much of a benefit a 3/4hp will be over my current 1/2hp unit. On the plus side it was complete minus the light shield. For the same money spent, I would have rather had your grinder on my stand.O well.
Anyone have a specific recommendation for a left hand nut source before I go to fastenall or mcmaster?
