While innocently minding my own business this morning, a flock of Ninja's came out of nowhere and threatened to do me bodily harm unless I submitted to their demand for me to put this Block grinder in the back of my truck and take it home. And then to add insult to injury, they stole $40 out of my pocket to buy Egg McMuffins to eat on the ride back to their lair. I've never felt so violated !

:ninja::ninja::ninja::ninja::ninja::ninja::ninja::ninja::ninja::ninja:

It's a model 397.19340 1/2hp 6" Flat Top with the short removable quench tray and original stand. The side covers are the round style, with no exhaust ports. The only parts missing are the rubber feet and black plastic lamp cover. I have extra feet in stock, and the cover is only a mouse clik away.

It runs smooth with a long run-down time, but the wheels may need to be replaced. They're both clogged smooth as a baby's **** with burnt wood. I'm not sure that the contractor that I bought it from ever used it to grind metal. I'll try dressing them first, but they may be too far gone.

My #6 Block grinder

I can't believe the audacity of that guy stealing McD's money ... the thievery!! But seriously, nice score jakemac! Btw, know where I can get those rubber feet? They're for the stand bottom, right?

Here's a shot of my 257 if that'll help.

Based on the casting date stamps of the last of the flat tops (which were early to mid 1980's), I would guess late '80's or early '90's. Definitely the end of an era of USA made grinders. Very nice find and, like TM, I would like to some pics of the internals as well.

The rubber feet for the grinder are Hillman #884633 at Lowe's

I just got this Sad Sack for $10 today: 1/3 HP no date on either side of the metal plate on the bottom. Not sure of age based on the gold label and plain Craftsman lettering...

Outlaw - I can't see the pictures, but a goldish plate suggests to me earlier, rather than later. Sometime in the 60's perhaps.

For some reason I always end up being 2 short on stands. I keep buying them, but I always seem to have 2 more grinders than I have of the stands. :headscrat

Oh, well. Maybe if I keep buying them, the math will work itself out. :dunno:

Ooooooo [cringe !] Poor baby fall down, go boom.

That label looks like one of he silver backed ones with the gray painted area where the data is. My gold backed ones are dated 1967. I couldn't find a date on the silver backed one, but I think it's earlier.

IIRC, the commercial factor is dual voltage.
1/2 Hp with dust ports are 7" units
-115v only are non commercial
-115/230v are commercial

3/4 hp and above are 8", dual voltage, some are labeled commercial, some are not. :dunno:

They also made a 1/3hp round top? with dust ports that was dual voltage and labeled commercial.

Adding to this:

1/2 hp w/o dust ports are 6" wheels
3/4 hp with 1/2" shaft are 7" wheels

Any issues with this?

After I finish up with Huey, Dewy, and Louie's 1/3-HP Blocks, I should have a 1/3-HP parts grinder that could help out this poor little fella.

Picked up this 1/3 HP with both original wheels, one is installed, and the original manual. On an aftermarket stand. Don't worry, I did NOT stray into Michigan, though I was close. Seller said he bought it new in 1977 and only used it a few times.

Nice score.

Lat time I checked, VintageMachinery's web site did not have a copy of your manual.

If you get a change to scan it and submit it in pdf format, I'm sure you'd receive a big thanks from the members.

BTW - I consider MI's UP part of WI anyways!

And the bumpy part around Benton Harbor, MI isn't worth hanging on to either.

I was close to Benton Harbor. Made a run on a few things, this was one of them. I will scan it and see what I can do. I think you should just give the UP to Canada. WI doesn't want it!

I have not seen a low priced block in my area for a while. I saw this 1/3HP today but it's pricey at $125. If the seller lets it go for $75 i might grab it because I kind of want that stand. Anyone know what kind of stand it is?

Looks like a generic stand for remote mounted drive motors. Maybe table saw or band saw? I have one similar in wood with a band saw mounted on it.

It's not a Craftsman stand. Maybe an Atlas or Delta/Rockwell. I've seen it before, but I can't remember what it was sitting under.

Bagged: since the 1/3 HP fills up the stand pretty well i'm also guessing maybe a Delta/Milwaukee bandsaw stand. it does have a nicely made wood top to it so it does have some value in the deal.

It is a Delta stand, off the top of my head and aspect ratio without knowing dimensions I'd say jointer or possibly bandsaw. The bandsaw stands were pretty narrow though. Based on the width of the grinder I don't think that is for the bandsaw. Could be a sander stand as well. :headscrat:

The curved legs certainly look like Delta or Atlas. I would guess a jointer or bandsaw stand

I'm guessing that stand is a Delta as we'll, looks like what's under my miter saw.

Thanks everyone for the info. I already have a genuine craftsman stand for my 1/2HP so this stand might be cool to either put my other 2 blocks, or mount my belt sander project.

Not to get off track but I have this Dayton belt sander I got for $23, and I have an 11" inch pulley that I got for free with a table saw, which had a 3/4 Hp craftsman motor. I want to make a tubular vertical mount for it.
