JZ: don't feel like the lone ranger. i and a few others are jealous of EX and others that can just whip out a new part.

Bob: an awfully big block grinder? or why are you asking on this thread??

Let me know how you make out. I need to start some lathe projects. I just haven't had time to learn what metals I need to buy, etc.

Its so easy, yet it makes such sense. If you make the bore a slip fit on the grinder shaft (don't worry about matching the wheel ID), and you machine everything in one chucking, it will make the wheel run true.
That is usually the hardest thing to deal with. Using paper shims is a pain. Then its just asimple matter to dress the OD of the wheel concentric.
I applaud whoever invented that! I feel ashamed that I build speakers for a living, and I never thought to simply use a magnet pole piece (it's called a T-pole) and make grinder arbors with them :)

Now I'm starting to think about bearings in my 3/4hp block... My 1/2hp runs much smoother and quieter. Earlier today when I had both wheels off of the 3/4hp I started it up and it was still a bit rattly. No slack in the shaft, and not really grainy, but I guess the bearings are not totally smooth.

Yeah, I'm on a 7 step program. (That will leave me with 3 blocks) got rid of 1 today. Just gotta stop finding them.

LOL! Well if you find a 1/2 or 3/4hp laying around that you don't need. :)

Then again, I'm in the Phoenix area, not sure how much shipping would be?

Kyle: Bob might be close because i can't think of any apartment houses up here that would have an AC unit outside it.

Bob: if you put your location in your GJ profile it might help us relieve you of a few of those great blocks. i was kinda right?

you don't have a problem other than you have a great eye for quality tools.

cheers

EX: when you start speaking "METAL" you lose me. any chance you can translate in English so those of us that want to own a lathe might know how easy or hard that part is to make? thanks

Thanks for asking. It's my personal block grinder hoard. 14 feet long and 5.75 h.p.

Holy smokes! You were referring to TBHP (total block horse power). We went through that a number of pages back and 5.75 is a big number. I know Drives suggested putting your location in your profile, but if you have them outside like that, Torqueman might swing by and scope them up. Of course, then you would have a pocket full of cash to buy more. Nice collection!

I'm a lot closer than torqueman, i'll be gone before he clears Detroit.

The 4th from the left looks like a big boy.

Just got a handle on this posting pictures business (so look out). This ones for Torqueman. Gonna take apart another 3/4 soon and take better pics. 80s vs. 70s side by side.

ALL: Bob just posted his location so i'm sure one of you is close enough to hand him some cash in person.

Bob: how do you like the belt grinder on your 1HP? did you buy the same one that McB bought and installed on the blockmeister or do tell?

thanks

Thanks, but a few were in pretty good shape when they followed me home. Love the belt grinder but too many projects keeping me from playing with it more. It's the same multitool McB has. Was gonna buy the bigger one when it went on sale but I made a mock up of it and it stuck out way too far. It will end up on a 3/4 and the 1h.p. used for open wheeling.

So I got the bug tonight and tore down my 3/4hp flat top grinder. Sure enough, one bearing was very grainy the other one just a touch on the loose side. Bearing had 77503 stamped in the shields, and measured 12x40x17 (WxODxID). I'm ordering Nachi 6203 replacements for it.

When I pulled the rotor out I noticed this bent "fin". I can see a mark in the corner where it received the impact. It was clearly like this when I bought it and it doesn't seem to cause any issues. But I'm wondering, how in the world could it have happened and do I even need to be concerned?

That is really odd. Maybe it happened during assembly? I can't image that it is hurting anything being like that. I would NOT try to straighten it out. If it breaks off, you'll probably have balance issues.

JZ: very odd indeed.

Bob: so you have Blockmeister #2 and the hits just keep coming on this thread. BTW McB started a thread on his blockmeister that you might have seen. did you put some pictures of yours on it and maybe some input on the installation and how yours runs? nice collection and DOC might have a road trip coming up where you two can meet and i'd love to be the fly on the wall taping that conversation.

cheers

Meguiars Mirror Glaze 17 did a great job of cleaning the haze off the plastic eye shields. I've had that bottle 25 years, and it still works well.

I set out today on a mission to make a shelf for my blocks to get the ones not in use out of my way. I am NOT any kind of craftsman with woodworking but this actually turned out pretty good. Its all lumber I had laying around so no out of pocket expense. Its 4 feet long, 1 foot deep. The shelf is 2 1x6s. I can fit 3 blocks up there, or maybe 5 if I angled them. Why so small you may ask? Because my garage is small and i'm only out hunting for big game which has so far been non existent.

I was cleaning/reorganizing the garage today and stumbled across something that worked really well. I had to grind down some bolts and dreaded having them ripped from my hand and thrown the dark recesses of the garage never to be seen again. I found an old pair of hose clamp pliers for use on those old wire hose clamps. Turns out that they work really well holding bolts and screws. So, if you happen to have a pair, put them to work.

Nice tip  I usually use a vise grips but that works better if you're concerned about marking the head up.

Question on the 1/3 "Industrial Rated" blocks from the 60s. Do these have capacitor motors, or just the ones that specifically say so on the plate/label (like the 1/2 and up commercials). I only see the pre-blocks as having that on the label in the 1/3 family.

Great tip!!! I have an extra pair (big surprise, huh...), so a set is going to land next to my wire wheel setup!

The Nachi 6203 bearings worked great. The grinder starts up a bit noisy when accelerating (not sure why) but then just purrs along, very very smooth. Totally worth the effort.
