I took it apart so as to give it a good cleaning. I discovered that some insects had called the grinder base home at some point. It is in very good shape and purrs like a kitten.

Does anyone have any ideas on how to remove the light coat of rust off of the gooseneck light?

If you only had a block grinder, you could put on a wire wheel and....oh wait. :)

Cheers!

My two block grinders' (I have a 1/2HP 257.191400 as well) threads are 1/2-20. I purchased the left-hand re-threading die and nut from McMaster-Carr. I bought the "Thread Repairing Dies for Tight Spots" for less than $3 + shipping.

Started cleaning up the replacement lamp for the 3/4 restoration. I was planning to just repaint it, but seeing the brass has me considering a bare/polished finish. But the grooves and small indents are proving to be a PITA to strip. Open to ideas...

Mothers and some terrycloth.

You might use the tip of a cleanly sheared off round toothpick in the indents with some mothers.

You will need to clean any residual Mothers out of the indents, so maybe WD-40 and a toothbrush afterwards? Then finish with a clean dry cotton rag.

Thanks Outlaw... no Mothers on hand, but AutoSol did the trick after some additional time with sandpaper. Not perfect, but good enough for a grinder lamp. Now I can start working on the multi-tool attachment.

Just picked up this 1/3 hp 397.19580 same as Arnesto above. Paid a little more than I wanted to but I liked the stand and I never see them with all the tool rests, original light, eye shield, and guards in place.

It's made by Dico and is called a Nyalox wheel. They come in 3 colours the orange is 120 grit, blue is 240 grit and the gray is 80 grit.
Seems ok so far, but they aren't any cheaper than a good wire wheel.

I've should have all new hardware for the eyeshields, this week. I just need to make tool rests, and try to find a rough service bulb- not so easy as they are phasing out incandescent lights up here.

Thanks for posting about the Dico Nyalox wheels.

I got some rough service bulbs awhile back at Menards if there are any near you, it might be worth a try.

I'm not sure where you're located, but I did a quick search on Amazon for "rough service bulbs", and had several choices.

I haven't tried LEDs for this kind of application, but that might work, also.

If you can, please post how you are making the eye shields and tool rests.

A lot of members will be interested to see how it's done, myself too.

These are hard to find, when the Blocks don't come with them.

Oh, we can never get enough pictures.

I have the original eye shields, so I won't be making them, but they would be hard to replicate in a home shop, they are press formed.
I'll post pictures of the tool rest once I get them replicated. I only have pictures to go by so dimensions won't be exact.

I saw that too and I shook my head in amazement. I paid $55 for the same model and $50 for a different model 1 hp block. I am not criticizing the individual who paid that much on ebay, just surprised me at how much they were willing to pay.

A 1HP Sears Best complete with eye shields, tools rests and heavy duty base showed up on the local OfferUp for $95 last night. I don't need a 1HP but I would like one. I'll let it sit for a little while and see if I can get it cheaper.

Yes, that is a fair price for a complete 1-HP Block.

And, you've provided enough information that it can now be found by unsavory individuals.:ninja:

Haven't cleaned mine or looked at it al all since I scored it. Today I had a need to grind off a small edge from a piece of metal so I thought I'd fire it up and see what this little 1/4horse is all about.

Absolutely Remarkable! This thing is so sweet I can really see now what all the press is about.
Cheapo from foo king tools will probably just be given away because I don't think I can ever go back to it.

I'd love to pick up that 1HP block, but cash is tight at the moment. I have a 1/3 and 1/2 that meet my needs fine so it's hard to justify the 1HP right now. Now that doesn't mean I'm not trying like hell to justify buying it. :D With that said, if anyone here truly wants it I don't mind playing middle man for you, just let me know and I'll make an offer on it for you.

That's a very kind offer, I hope someone here is able to give it a good home.

I would love to give that grinder a good home :)
We just need to find someone driving from the Cleveland, OH area to your area.

OWWM/VM has a Ruckering system - "Coined in honor of Keith Rucker's proclivity of purchasing big 'ol arn very far away and having said machine hauled cross-country by multiple hands. Many legs of Ruckering are performed by OWWMers who are "goin' that way anyways". May also include storage in one or several rat holes along the way, while awaiting the next leg of Ruckering. Older posts may refer to the UnderGround RailRoad in a similar capacity."

Need some help from the blockhead brain trust. I am restoring a 3/4hp cap start and it started tripping the GFCI this weekend (confirmed it was not the GFCI as I tested on several circuits). Can a weak start-up cap cause this issue? I did a quick resistance measurement and it seemed to check out (started at zero and quickly tracked up to infinity). And of course after reinstalling it, the grinder would once again start up.

Here's variable... I installed a multi-tool (followed McB's thread) and assume the additional rotational load could be taxing the cap due to an increased current draw during start up.

vertguy - I am not sure if that is what your Block is doing. But, take a read of this FLUKE capacitor test article.
http://en-us.fluke.com/training/tra...re-capacitance-with-a-digital-multimeter.html

I think I have another link on cap testing, I'll post it here if/when I find it.

I do know, the 3/4 & 1-HP Blocks I have say to use a 'slow blow' fuse. I think that's for the current surge @ start-up. But that seems to be different than a GFCI, which monitors current leakage on the ground circuit. IIFC

EDIT - "The best way to really test a capacitor is to substitute a known good one. A VOM or DMM will not test the cap under normal operating conditions or at its full rated voltage. However, it is a quick way of finding major faults."
Well, that's not what I was hoping to find.
http://www.repairfaq.org/REPAIR/F_captest.html#CAPTEST_001

Also, search the OWWM's Everything Electrical topics for "Should a start capacitor have continuity?"
