I know hawk, the world seems crazy sometimes.

This area seems to have more than it's fair share of Blocks.

I've sold a Block on eBay, and would've listed the 1 HP in a week or so, if it didn't get picked up by a member.

I'm content to cover my costs, plus something for my time and gas.

That's cool... I bought a vise from a guy the other day, he had a bunch of old equipment and I saw an OLD craftsman bench grinder. I would have taken a picture but it was kind of buried with a bunch of other stuff.

After paying an admission price of 40 bucks, I'm now in the Craftsman block grinder club. I found this one in beautiful original condition. It is quiet, smooth and takes about 2 minutes to spin down when shut off. The bottom indicates that it was made in September of 1966.

That's the good news.

The bad news is that I'm missing a side cover. Does anyone here know where I can find one? For now I will just run a wire wheel on that side.

Welcome to the club! I have to tell you - the admission price isn't a one time deal. You're on the hook to rescue other lost and lonely blocks. I don't know where or when it ends, but it appears be be a lifelong membership.

You've been warned!

I think you're right. I already ordered a set of old new stock rubber feet for it. lol

Let me know if you have a source for wheel covers. I need one.

Thanks! :)

From time to time, I've parted out Blocks. Unfortunately, I cannot help at the moment.

However, here's a link to a thread where the poster made a wheel guard (side) cover.

BTW - Nice Block at a very good price.

Thanks for the link. If all else fails, I will just make one. I know that both sides are identical so having one side assures that I have a perfect template. It sure would be much easier to buy a cover though. lol

You are welcome.

I think many of us that own more than 1 Block, have bought at least 1 other Block as a parts donor. ;)

I know one time my parts Block turned out to be in better condition, than the Block I was restoring.

And that's one reason I have, as some have said: 'more than my fair share of Blocks.'

I think it's more of a critical mass situation, where after a certain point, they find you. Kind of like the 'strong force' in physics, but at larger distances.

This guy followed me home today. I didn't steal him, but over the years I have learned that it's actually cheaper to buy the BEST vs. buying a beater, over the long term. He's from 1974, and he has lived an easy life. Even the stones are original (and awesome).

I need a buffer, so all the cool grinder stuff will have to come off for now, which only means that it will be in perfect condition for when I need a grinder and it gets put back on.

Parts pop up on eBay from time to time...

I *think* there was a member or two that posted in one of these grinder threads with parts too... Just have to be patient...

Personally, I almost always put a stone on the left and a wire or buffing wheel on the right.

I'm pretty sure that the config you mentioned is how this grinder was setup for a long time. The left wheel is the 1960s original while the one on the right is much newer. I'm guessing it was thrown on there to make it look complete.

For the moment I am going to add a wire wheel on that side. Hopefully parts turn up soon.

Please keep me on your Christmas list for one block grinder wheel cover. :)

Note to self... don't mix bourbon and ebay as I assumed my last bid would not stand. Oh well, it will make for a fun project. It is fairly complete and is only missing the tool rests. And since the guards are drilled/tapped, I assume this one did not come with heavy duty/separate tool rest base.

Now I need to find a clean label as a reference and see if Matt is still making them.

If you don't mind my asking, what did your bourbon bid come out to ? I am on the lookout for a 1 hp mailbox or block style myself!

$150 plus shipping, I watched that blue one, internals may be fine, just maybe freshen up the color, 3/4-1hp seem to be harder to find lately, IMHO

Price has dropped to $50! If the bearings have held up, this is a good deal :)

Wierd that it's still available after over a month. While it's only 15 mins from where I work, I have no desire for another block grinder anymore....Now if it was an industrial grade grinder like a Baldor (>1/2hp), Wissota, or Rockwell it would be a different matter.

That's because after uttering the 'unforgivable /ultimate' blasphemy -
I have no desire for another block grinder ....
he dashed over there
:3gears:after work and rescued it from the unwashed /unbelievers.

It's OK. You are among friends and enablers. :D

Maxima, maybe I am too quick to judge.

If it's a space issue, or how to mount more than 1 Block; I may have stumbled upon an answer almost in my back yard.

Why even the eBay seller demonstrates how it can be done.

While I did pick it up today, and it is currently in my grubby paws, it alas is headed out of town on the next Pony Express out of here!

Question for the gurus...

I have a 3/4 HP non-commercial block grinder, non-cap-start. The label says 6.0 amps.

I also have a 1/2 HP commercial block grinder, cap-start. This label says 6.2 amps.

Both are 1/2" arbor with 7" wheels. Which one is actually the heavier duty motor? :headscrat

I honestly don't know.

I wonder if weight (minus: stones, guards, rests, eye shields) might be an indicator. Thicker windings and rotor assembly?

A cap start motor typically has more starting torque, but grinders rarely need too much to get the wheels going. I suspect that both grinders share the same stator/rotor dimensions, so my vote would go to the one that draws more amps.

Time for a side by side 2X4 test:

Fire them both up and press in a 2X4 to the point of stalling. does one resist longer/more?

Stick them on a scale and see which weighs more? I doubt there will be much difference. I don't even pay attention to "HP" ratings on grinders anymore, only the amps...

Not so quick---I just made contact with the seller and it's still available. I'm trying to decide if I really want that one. I'm not a big fan of the split phase grinders with those crappy molded shields and stamped guard ends..:headscrat

Did a little research on the 3/4 standard vs. 1/2 commercial question tonight... My data is mixed but I think the 3/4hp may still win here.

Primary coil resistance:
3/4hp = 1.3 ohm
1/2hp = 1.5 ohm

Stator thickness:
3/4hp = 1.78"
1/2hp = 1.59"

However, the 3/4hp inner shaft is thinner (17mm with snap ring for bearing mount) than the 1/2hp (19mm I think with shoulder for bearing) so that is a contributing factor.

Visually the main windings of the 3/4hp are definitely a larger diameter than the 1/2hp too.

JZ: my guess is that both the commercial 1/2 and the regular 3/4 are more grinder than any of us will need, but we do all like a bit more power as Tim Allen always used to say.

Outlaw: THE SIDE BY SIDE 2x4 TEST??? I hadn't heard of that one and maybe one of the guys (or you) will post up a video showing it?
