So far my experience with flea markets is pretty bad. I would have grabbed that one just to make the trip worthwhile! I think these look great in any condition. Just clean off the rust and dirt and put it to work.

Today, I made it to the flea market earlier than usual. Thinking that I would have to wait for some vendors to show up, I was pleasantly surprised at the turnout. Almost straight away, I came across this Craftsman 1/3hp grinder which I promptly snapped up for the sum of $15. Not too pretty, but it runs great!

Dated Feb 22 1965 on the bottom.

Some of my grinders have had those same flanges. I think they are stock.

Went to an Estate sale Friday, and there were a few good things tool wise. but most was HF junk. Back of the garage had a couple of sheets up covering everything on the bench no for sale. I peeked behind the sheets to see this sitting there ready to go home with me. They wouldn't sell it. but took my name n number in case the kids decided to sell... nice 1/3 hp model. frustrating! hah

How are you guys getting the bearings re-seated inside the case? Popped off the old ones without too much trouble, got the new ones on the shaft to the right point, and trying to figure out easiest way to re-assemble. Do the threaded rods simply pull everything together? Don't really want to heat the center core with the copper wiring already screwed in.

You don't need to heat the core or the housing.

The end plates are what you would heat if needed. Save the easiest one for last, then screw it together...

What are you calling end plates? If I heat one side, I can seat it, then install rotor around the shaft already in. Do I just use the rods as reverse-puller (Presser?) To recombine the center?

I just tapped in one side, then lined everything up and lightly tap the housing on the other side until it is seated. Then double check alignment and slowly tighten the long bolts.

Ok, that was my other thought. Use the same tube I used to seat the bearing to contact the housing to seat it.

I think he means, why is the bottom of it different from the left? Neither of my block grinders have guards that look like those. Mine are the style where it's the same casting and one is just flipped over. Like these...

I agree Dave.


This was discussed some time ago. IIRC - speculation from the Vintage Machine forum was a design to allow the use of an attachment that never made it to market.


I could be way off, please anyone chime in with more info.

Yeah I was talking about the bottom being square on the right side. Doesn't look like anything I have seen before. More pics would be awesome.

Here are some photos of the left inner wheel housing. There is a crack you can see. Also this appears to not have been modified the external removable tool guards appear to be original. I haven't picked it up but I've secured my second Craftsman round top grinder and third original Craftsman stand. It's a 1/2hp commercial model. I think it's the same model posted above and it's in excellent condition.

Another GJ member I've gotten to know through hunting for vintage American vises found it and gave me a great deal on it. Of course I've found him a Reed 406 and now a pair of Reed 4C's. I'm going out to pick it up from him soon.

The one you posted looks just like mine minus the bolt on tool rests that mine seems to have. Yours does have the holes where where the tool rest I have is bolted to. It could be something that someone added to it at some point in the last 50 years unless I am missing something.

Yes, it's like your model. The tool rests are on bolted like yours, but are seen in the background in the 2nd and 3rd pictures. :thumbup:

To you guys think that crack can be repaired? Or should I just ignore it?

Anyone know the name of this black piece with the red wire on it? Seems I did not remember seeing it in the other pictures before.(first picture this post)

And here is a picture of the inside from the left.

Also in the picture of the bearing what is this metal spring washer part?
