Well if they make noise change them out.
Also if the wheels spin forever after shutting it off it that shows there is no drag which means little grease is left in them.

Generally they all need new bearings at this point but if they aren't causing harm then you can keep them for awhile.

Nice job cleaning it up, it's in great shape!


The black round piece with red wire, is a start capacitor. Available from Amazon, Grainger, and several on-line sources. You'll want to get as close to the OEM specifications as you can (+/- 10%), better to go higher than lower.


The crack is probably from a fall and not a stress crack from use. Having said that, you could 'V' out the crack and use a Metal Epoxy to repair it.


I wouldn't try to force it back into original shape, as the cast aluminum is prone to cracking.


I have repaired a similar crack/break with success on a Block.


Keep us up-to date on your progress. Oh, yes on replacing the bearings - also available from Amazon, Grainger, and several on-line sources.

Missed this pre-block about 90 miles away from here. Everybody did. I had thought I would check on it when I was in the area, but didn't make it in time. I wish I had had time to contact him when I was there a couple weeks ago. But he scrapped it out.

I check the thread every day, several times.

I haven't stopped hunting down and bagging Blocks, just no restores at the moment.

I've been keeping busy, actually it's my family keeping me busy.

My daughter and son-in-law bought a '04 Yukon Denali with 245,000 miles on it, after they turned in a leased car.

I'm putting it right for them, piece by piece. Today we picked up a very nice grill and rear bumper.

So, I see your Block museum is looking ship-shape!

I just picked up a Craftsman 1/4hp grinder model# 397.19571 but none of the wires are connected except at the windings, the switch is missing and so is the power cord. If it wouldn't be too much of a hassle will anyone that has the same grinder mind snapping a pic or two of how yours is wired

Sorry, I don't have any info. on that model.

Please post pics. of the wiring inside: ie: is there a relay, how many/what color wires from the coils,...

Thank you for your input and pictures. The one I have looks exactly like the up-skirt picture youve shared of her internals. I wish I would have seen this earlier because its a lot easier to see what goes where when compared to the picture I was using as a referance, but regardless she's alive. She runs smoother and quieter that I thought she would with a DOB of 12OCT1964:beer:

So just culled one from the herd. Put new bearings in it, cleaned and painted it all, and had Matt send me a new label. For $80, it now has a new home. Had the quench tray and light, just hadn't put them on for the picture (also finished wire wheeling the other tool rest).

Figured it was produced late enough that the black/red combination made sense. Basic Rustoleum.

Today's Craigslist snag. More of a garage sale really but I was on it from a single ad posted on CL. Called the guy soon after it went up in the evening but could only leave a message. I got busy doing chores in the morning and when I took a break at 8:30 I remembered the ad and checked my phone to see if he called back. No call. So I called him. Yep he had it. Had a couple a grinders actually. And a bunch of tools for sale because he was moving. Yes he had several calls and several people were on the way. I didn't ask him but he told me he wasn't going to hold anything for anybody. I was a half hour away so I pondered a moment then said I'd be on my way over. I burnt some time on a wrong turn in an area of dead end streets. I figured that delay was going to be what sunk me. I pull up and there's already four or five trucks and I see the old man leading a gaggle of hard tails out back to his shop. I made my way in and spotted the Craftsman grinder immediately, a guy standing right in front of it with two hands on it. The seller was a very popular fellow at that moment but I caught his ear and asked, that the Craftsman grinder? Affirmative. I said I'll take it. The guy with his hands on it looks up and is like WTF? The old man chimed in that I'd called earlier. All friendly and fun. Great prices and the place was cleaned out in a matter of minutes. The guy I beat to the grinder picked up a very nice 4 hp compressor for $50. I'd recently bought a US made Dayton that suits me just fine but I couldn't pass this up. It was more the thrill of the chase and the score than the need. Even if it had been sold I needed to check out something at a Home Depot that was nearby not a wasted trip either way. $10, I just couldn't say no.

Early this week I got lucky and found this really nice 1975 1/2 HP 397.195891 on my local FB Marketplace. It didn't need much to get it ready to go, basically cleanup and replace wheels. Its missing one of the shields, but otherwise complete. I picked up grommets at Lowes and will mount this somewhere near my 1/3 HP. I'm thinking this one might have had the original wheels on it as I noticed they were marked Craftsman when I removed them.

A friend gave me this one last week since he was moving and clearing out things. The switch broke when I tried to test it so I don't know if it works. It's a 3/4 horse, and appears to be model 397.19471, but the last two numbers are very vague. It's also missing the right side cover over the wire wheel. I'll see if he has the cover but, if not, will try to find another.

Those damn plastic switches. I've been lucky with them so far but moved up to commercial versions so I don't have to deal with them anymore.

Can't wait to get round tops with no plastic.

Has anyone found a source for the quench/cooling trays?

A quick search of eReplacementParts & searspartsdirect for p/n: 534436227 shows it has been discontinued.

Here's my just finished 1/4 horse. I stumbled upon this site 2 years ago, found a grinder for $10 and finally got around to restoring it. It came with 1 tool rest and I'm making the other. Probably needs a new cord soon, spins really nice. It will be put to work in my garage. I've also pulled the trigger on a Craftsman 100 drill press, so stay tuned for that! Thanks guys.

Picked this one up at an auction this week; thought it was cool with the older stand. I'm guessing the stand was a general power tool stand and not grinder specific.
