I do have a 1 HP that the PO had wired up for 220VAC, he cobbled up an extension cord to run it, just to show it did run.

I've yet to run it at home.

I can't say for sure what difference there is, if any. I was pre-occupied with staying out of the way of a mean looking chicken! :lol_hitti

Somebody needs to go get this in the Pittsburgh area.

Had anyone run one of these on 220?
Have yet to see one actually wired that way.

I looked at my list of Blocks. The difference I can see, is that model 397.19440 is dual-voltage and somewhat more desirable.

Tourqueman,

I actually did go with the dual voltage model by chance. The owner decided he liked the black one better so it was his choice. Im pretty happy with it. It is my first block. I want to put some new bearings in it when I take it appart for cleaning so I'll have to find a source for those. It has the original wheels on it which will be replaced. I started cleaning it up and most of what you see is just dirt the paint is pretty nice under it all.

Thanks for the info!

I switched a Taiwan motor fro 120 to 220, and it was noticeable. many years later (and many years ago) I tried to switch it back and one of the winding's popped internally on start...

Point being it is worth doing, IF you have 220 easily available. I've always wired my shops for both 120 and 220 if it was available...

You are welcome.

I wish I could be certain which bearings are in that model (it varies with arbor diameter).

But, once you have the part number or ID, OD, Width (mm), you can get the NTN number here, a 1-HP with a 5/8" arbor was used in this example :
https://bearingfinder.ntnamericas.c...-radial-ball-bearings/6203zzc3-em?plpver=1006

You can also go to Amazon, Grainger, etc, ... directly with the dimensions. I prefer double shielded, but you may want sealed bearings. They are not too expensive, ~$9/each.

Best of luck. Any questions, just ask.
:)

Trash them. Even when polished they'll likely disintegrate - mine were crumbly as hell. I'd prefer something which might provide some protection!

Here's what I just came up with and am pleased with how it looks. I bought a set of these from Grainger and some of these brackets from McMaster, opened up the holes on the long side for a 1/4" bolt to pass through, and here's how it turned out. Not perfect but I think it looks fine and should hold up.

Plus, with the steel hardware, I can easily make new ones in the future by cutting some PC to a desired size and drilling a couple of holes.

If anyone's interested, the replacement eyeshields mentioned above can be found at Zoro now, here

I bought this 3/4 horse block because I realized that my 6" Ryobi was a toy. It sat on Letgo for 3 weeks before I contacted the guy. I work in Lake Charles, LA, but live in Lake Jackson, TX. So I had to sweat it out for 4 days before getting to Richmond, TX to pick it up.

It's all there including a nice light and the stand. It runs as new. I gave $100 for it.

Then the very next day I found this 10", 1 hp Thor at a yard sale! The guy wanted $40, but it didn't start. He said it was the switch. I offered $30 and deadlifted it into my truck (weighs about 75 lbs). Turns out it was the switch. I shut it down last night and I think it's still winding down. I'll restore that when I get some time. The guards on the Thor are castings!

Had been looking for a nice old Craftsman grinder to replace my crappy HF grinder and match my recently acquired and restored vintage Craftsman vise (visible on the background). Thankfully one finally popped up locally so I jumped on it. It looks to be in pretty good shape. This grinder will be put to work and help me with my home car restoration projects.
It has "6231R" marked on the bottom, is this any indication of when it was built? I know this model is a later one.

Those are two good deals!

Thanks KC!

I saw that block on Letgo and thought, "that's a nice looking unit!" Then I found this thread and started getting nervous as it had been up for 3 weeks! I texted the guy and told him i'd paypal him the money, but he was very nice about it and held it for me.

I saw another 1/2 horse "Industrial" for $40 yesterday with a stand and light, but it was gone in less than 24 hours.

The cat is out of the bag, the genie is out of the bottle, the toothpaste is out of the tube, and ain't goin' back in with the popularity of these machines.

Anyone ever seen a Dayton branded block grinder?

00M0M_9xxPhzgaUFg_600x450.jpg
Not me.

Interesting. I wonder if the same supplier made the CM Blocks.

Do you have any more info. on it?

After a closer look, it appears to have a slightly rounded top, and the wheel guards are a bit different. And there are mounting bolts showing on the front.

And now for some real craziness:

Yeah you could get good money for that 3/4 with HD base.
But ebay does take their fees and it is a pain to ship.
I've sold a couple on there and made out well.

I found a 1/2hp round top I'm going to pick up in a couple days. Its the later model with plastic shields but I kept a glass set from my first 1/3 hp that I sold.
Looks almost new in the blurry low res pic. Unfortunately I can't even post that since he took the ad down.

Here's a pic of a new one... mine comes with the cheapo tube steel stand. Model 397.19591

Ha ha, yeah that one is nice but not mine. I did get a couple new pics though so here she is.... Not new but in good shape.

I've been searching around on these while I wait to pick it up. I've only found a handful of postings here and almost all of them are the plastic switch version. For some reason I thought they were more common like the flat tops.

Yeah I haven't seen one of those stands, other then in your pics.
Are they fairly sturdy? I will probably have to to move it on along with my current 1/2 hp flat top to pay for the new one.

Even with a craftsman stand too, although no one wants those...and that $770 grinder craziness on ebay has been listed for some time...

No more info. As you say there are differences, but the basic shape is identical.

Today's acquisition. $50.

The good: 1/3hp industrial with OEM stand and the oft missing water tray.

The bad: Stand tube has been cut down so is too short. Both rests missing, one entire wheel guard/shroud missing, the other outer cover missing.

What's the proper height of the Cman stand?

I wonder that, too. I’d guess 36”.
Also, in pics I’ve seen, looks like only two holes bored in the top casting...so do you just bolt through the front two holes (of eight) in the grinder base, or is that an illusion?

The Blocks mount to the stand by way of 2 holes midway point on the sides. Sears Craftsman Power Tools 1963 says 34" high.

Hmmm, 1969 Catalog says 32.5"

That elusive 1 hp. Stand, wheel guards, eye shield, extra grinding wheels... It's all there!! Posted 3 days ago.

I can't post links or images as yet as I only have 4 posts, but check out Craigslist Long Island - Craftsman Grinder.

Thanks Jeff! That's the one! Looks very clean as well. With a light poking up. That one is tricked out with all the options except the brake.
