Photo attached.

Bought them at lowes for right under $4/can. They were running a special due to Rustoleum no longer carrying this color so I picked them all up at two different lowes. Lol

Picked this one up on Friday for $50 at an estate sale. The photo didn't show it being on a stand, so that was a nice surprise. :bounce: Beautiful condition but disappointed that it has a bit of a vibration to it. I was surprised given how little use it appears to have had. I haven't tried dressing the wheels yet.

That's a real beauty! Stand, quench tray, tool attachment, and the proper eye shields for that model. Those eye shields are not easy to come by. To put it in perspective, just today on the big auction site, I sold a quality set of eye shields exactly like those for more than you paid for the whole thing.
This should earn you a few, "you ****" responses.

That is beautiful!

How did you fix/repair/replace the nameplate and the silver part it mounts on?

The nameplate/label was done by Matt, a fellow member and follower of this thread. The label is great quality, I’m extremely pleased with it. As for the silver part, it was all taken apart soaked in simple green for a day or so, brushed and cleaned up, lastly straightened it from the inside the best I could. Then came the primer and paint.

What type paint did you use for the silver?

I honestly don’t remember the exact name of the silver paint. I know it was rustoleum as well. I’m out of town, but when I get back home in a few days I’ll look into it and post a photo.

Here’s my latest block grinder pair. They need a cleanup but run well and look to be complete. Matching stand too!

3/4hp industrial and the 1hp!

Ziggy, you have officially been Californized and probably need to skip town immediately in order to be saved from the scourge ;) Good luck with your upcoming move!

Had no idea they made a double stand.

Here's a recent acquisition. Pretty much complete from end to end, and surprisingly good shape. Purrs like a kitten.

Brake feature works, though I don't see myself using it too much other than for the novelty:

Date stamp was March of 1968, for the curious.

I also have a pre-block that I've had a few years, you can find that one here.

A Short Story and a request for help
I never knew I was a victim of Craftsman Block Grinder addiction. It came upon me suddenly, when, a few weeks ago, I got rid of my underpowered, no name bench grinder. I knew I wanted the replacement to be more powerful, to have less vibration and to be worthy of the space consumed on my benchtop. My search took me to the usual: HD, Lowes, Grainger, Amazon, EBay, etc. And then, BOOM, on the Atlanta C’List, there it was – a Craftsman model 257-191500 ¾ HP, (7 x ¾ x ½) looking to be fresh out of a timelock vault. A few hours later the “Beast” was mine.

It still has the Sears Craftsman 36 and 60 grit wheels installed. I plan on keeping the 36 grit wheel, removing the 60 grit wheel, and using that side for a few alternate wheels (100 grit, polishing wheel, and a couple different wire wheels).

Replacement wheel size (7 x ¾ x ½) is not one that aftermarket wheels manufacturers make in vast numbers. So, how to deal with the lack of replacement wheels?

There appear to be many choices for 7” replacement wheels that are 1” wide. My grinder appears to have ample space to install 1” wide wheels. My question is: Am I safe in going to 1” wide wheels on my grinder designated for ¾” wheels?

If not, could anyone lead me to a replacement wheel manufacture that does 7 x ¾ x ½ wheels (I’d be just fine with a larger arbor size if the wheel came with a spacer).

I know you can tell from the pic that all parts are not original. No matter, you see, I’m a Craftsman Block Grinder addict, and I have time. I will get my OEM replacement fixes when and where they become available.

1278. Forty years old last Christmas and looking like a showroom star.

I'm still nervous about replacing my 3/4" width grinding wheels. I can only find the replacement wheels I want in the 1" width. Measurements seem to indicate they will fit without conflict, however, I would appreciate anyone giving me their opinions or personal experiences or whatever they can share.
Torqueman - thanks for all the links! I have lots of homework to do.

Picked this up a few weeks ago from a thrift/junk store for a Jackson. Now it's my wire wheel and buffer grinder.

You are welcome.

I don't have your style Block, but I run a 1" on both a 3/4 & 1HP Block w/o clearance problems.

I've never seen that exact color combo, is that how you got it?

As long as the wheels don't have clearance issues it should be fine. Is it a stone wheel or something that going to "spread"?

First one done, two more to go!

Excellent job and GREAT color. Where did you get the rubber feet? Are they just grommets?

Looks to be the original colors. I can't see any indication of a repaint.
Thanks for the vote of confidence on oversizing the wheels. I'm going to give it a try with a 7" x 1" x 1" (reduced to 1/2") 100 grit "green" wheel. I can't find a wire wheel in 7" so I will be going with a 6" version for that one.

Picked up this 1/2 hp block on a stand for $30. Stand isn’t much. With the narrow base, probably lucky in never took a nosedive!
Grinder is all there except for the plastic eye shields and the plastic cap on the lamp. Manufacture date is July 9, 1974.
It runs great and takes over 2 minutes to coast down! Therefore, I’m thinking a complete rebuild isn’t necessary. For now, I’ll clean it up and replace the power cord. I may explore doing something with the lamp since it’s got some rust on the gooseneck and the socket seems a little sketchy.

A long "coast down" time can indicate dry bearings. They may need to be replaced.

Look at this cute little gal that followed me home tonight. She's even wearing a skirt!

397.19580, and she's got all her parts (quench tray still in the truck).
