Ok, I just have to know, how did you get that guy to meet on offerup??? I've been bugging him for three days now within an hour of it posting. I couldn't get more that one word answers from him and he wouldn't accept my full price offer three times in a row!!!!

It took a day and a half for a response.
Said he is going through a divorce.

I'm disappointed I didn't get it and I was happy for a minute that it was at least a GJ member that snagged it...... Until I saw you had two! Honestly, congrats!

The black one has longer shafts, it will get buffing wheels. The one from offer up is getting a scotch brite wheel, and a belt sander attatchment. The 3/4 HP I restored will stay with stones.
My 1/3 hp has one wheel for drill bits only, and one wheel for tungsten only.

"If it was closer I'd jump on it." me too!

I'm guessing it's a 1/3 or 1/2-HP, from the look of the wheel guard covers.

BTW - I was in Toledo, about 2 hrs from the guy below vv. I called the seller to see if he wanted to meet 1/2 way, but no reply. :(

Third 1 HP grinder in 3 weeks. This one is missing eye shields and tool rests. So it will be getting a Multi tool belt sander attatchment, and an 8” scotch brite wheel.

Technically, it is missing the original Deluxe Base which had the outboard rests and quench tray (like your other grinders). There are no mounting holes drilled in the guards to mount regular rests, so you would need to drill them.

Yes, you are correct.
If I kept it as is. Then I would drill and tap the guards. And fab tool rests like my black grinder. This one will be getting a Multitool belt sander attatchment, and deburring wheel. So the missing eye shields, and tool rests were not a concern.

And even missing that part, and despite an alternate plan, he still ***** for 3 in a row!

Another Multitool attachment! I still use mine regularly. It's a great attachment, but not quite a simple bolt-on with block grinders. Here is my how-to on some older blocks in case you haven't seen it:

What a great thread. Read through and now understand the Canadian version of a 397 that I have, and why I couldn’t find anything on it.

Purchased it about few weeks ago on a newer stand (Canadian Tire for those Canucks on the site) and the stand in turn mounted in a 20” x 20”, 1/4” steel plate with threaded leveling feet. The retiree I bought it off was downsizing his meticulously maintained shop but this was all I had room for. Paid $100 Canadian for it all (~$75 US).

Other than a good wipe down I haven’t done anything else to it.

Just picked up a Sears Craftsman Commercial today with stand and light.... model 397.19450. Bought to resell, at $20. Once I turned it on and heard that quiet purr... there's no way I'm selling it.

So.... should I do anything to it?

New to me, just picked it up this morning. Whole $25 at a garage sale.

It spins up immediately, no grunting to get the wheels moving. Has the gooseneck, shade, quench tray, wheel covers, pretty much everything....all it's missing are the spark arrestors. But, if I was stuck fabbing a part I guess those are the ones to be stuck with, eh? The right rest is also a little buggered up because the PO had the rests installed on the opposite sides. Apparently it contacted the wheel some but I think I can smooth that out acceptably enough.

If anyone has one of these and could measure the arrestors external dimensions, the width of the slot, and the thickness that would be super. Or, suggest a replacement, etc.

I feel like I've joined a club now. My existing B&D grinder will get repurposed into a wire wheel/buffer I think.

Thanks.

Welcome to the club! My 1/4 hp block (mfd 2/1962) did not come with spark arrestors, so I bought a pair.

However, I don't recall if 1/4 hp models were so equipped from the factory? If someone can confirm that they were not, I'd be happy to pass along the pair (with hardware) for what I paid.

That's kind, let me know.

I got it all mostly cleaned up (still trying to decide on a resto or not), wirebrushed the lamp gooseneck and wiped it with Johnson's paste wax, buffed the black shade so it doesn't look all dull and scratched, dressed the wheels (which look to be the originals), and got all the old, crusty grit out of everything.

Regarding the wheels, they ring nice and bright and I left it running for five minutes before dressing them, they seem to be solid.

All-in-all very happy with it.

I hope you replaced that yellow light bulb---can't imagine how useful it would have been.

Here are the dimensions from a 1/3-HP pre-Block.
35mm x 51mm x 1.6mm
slot
1mm x 35mm

I didn't see spark arresters on pre-Block 1/4-HP; however, 1/4-HP Block grinders do have them.

A guy I know passed away about four weeks ago. I went to help clean out his sheds and found this one. I feel a little bad but was told by the family to keep it.

Here's my before and after of my find last week... first one I've done. Only had to replace the light switch everything else was good. I will switch out the stone before use, everything was original on it.
