Bisley: i wonder if the thread might survive longer if you can add vintage and pre 1975 Craftsman power tools. or Craftsman power tools built before 1975? if you can't add or change the thread's title maybe starting another one and Jake and I and others will re post if you do.

thanks for starting it.

I thought about that as soon as I posted this. I did change it but for some reason it only shows the new title when you click on it. Going to have to get a Mod to help me on this one or Ill start a new thread :dunno:

I don't own a single Craftsman tool with a cord.
They all died prematurely.
:(

Same here... except none of them died on me, I just never bought any based on how bad others said they were. :dunno:

New ones, not older ones I am talking about.

drivesitfar: I love the engine turning on that table saw. Did they come that way or did you do that? Seems fairly elaborate, even if it were on a high-end tool.

They come that way. I have a couple of original, unrestored Craftsman 10 in. table saws and while they aren't quite as glossy and pretty as drivesitfar's, they still look pretty good. They are also very reasonable in our area. I bought one of mine for $40, complete with the original motor, fence, miter gage and associated stop, blade wrench and one cast iron extension. Nothing broken or missing but was mounted on a very crude, home built stand so it didn't look so good. Clean it up, built a new rolling stand, added a new carbide tipped blade and a segmented belt, and have been using it ever since. Spent more for the casters than I did for the saw but still don't have $150 total in it.

Wanted a better drill press so started searching local CL. Bought this Craftsman bench top for $60. Again, complete with original motor and nothing broken or missing. Found the Craftsman base in the local Habitat ReStore for $25. Added a piece of solid core door for the top and built a frame in the base to mount the casters. Might have $100 total in it. Works great.

Point of sharing the cost is that these older Craftsman tools are ruggedly built, and if you can find one that hasn't been abused, they are a great value. With a little effort to clean them up (i.e. not necessarily a restoration), they look good and are terrific tools.

I have a question for the CM guru's here.

I just picked up a floor drill press, model tag on base reads 103.21770. Mine has a pulley on the motor and one on the spindle.

Some I have seen have a middle pulley as well, with same model number. What is the difference?

You could order the same model drill press with the option of have the variable speed pulley or not.

The middle pulley is a speed reducer that was offered as an option. It gives the DP additional slower speeds for drilling harder/thicker materials like metal. It wasn't sold as part of the DP, it was sold separately. They can go for big bucks if you can find one.

Thanks for the info. I look forward to getting going on the refurb, but need to finish my 12/69 CM tool box first. I'll post some pics soon of the press and table saw I picked up today.

Thanks, I've been looking for a while now. Missed out on a vari-slow a few weeks ago. Needs a correct handle and I think the spindle bearing needs replaced, but the motor just got rebuilt, so it should last at least my lifetime.

Yes the vair-speed is definitely on my wish list. Look on eBay those handles show up time to time.

Bisley: i just noticed your thread still just says Craftsman power tools and the thread title in your last post says (pre 1975). keep at it i'm sure you'll figure it out or start a new thread and i'll repost since we aren't really looking for the new Craftsmans. good luck

Jakemac nailed it. The multi-speed pulley was sold as a separate catalog item. It wasn't an "option" in the sense that you would buy the press with or without it. It was a separate purchase that would work with any of the Craftsman presses (floor or bench) of that era.
