So I have a 3PH Porter Cable 15" disc sander at work. It's a beast and very handy, especially for frog mouthing aluminum and steel tubing we use for the frames of the airplanes we build. For general machining they are very handy, after you cut a piece of stock in the bandsaw, to get the burr off the edges so your piece fits properly in a vise for machining.

I've wanted one for my home shop. But I don't have 3PH or a way to make it. And those big disc sanders go for around $1,500 here.

A little 10" Kalamazoo that runs on 120V 1PH came up on CL for $150, so I called. It was listed as a grinder and over a few days, me and the owner finally connected and I went and looked at it. With an aggressive disc grit it works great. Lots of torque and more than good enough for my little shop purposes and will go good with my small Kalamazoo horizontal bandsaw.

Dave, the owner had gotten a bigger 3PH machine and was getting rid of this one. I tried to negotiate, but he knew it was a good deal and finally gave it to me for $140. It has a Baldor motor, a dust cabinet and fan below and came with extra discs.

Turns out he is registered here in GJ, so he is my 4th GJ meetup.

He has a nice little 2 car plus shop and lives in the same suburb as my brother, so I went and visited my brothers family afterward.

I almost bought a Tannewitz 30-SD a while back. Wrong timing, so I let it pass. The next one that shows up might just come home with me.

Mine's a toy compared to that one.

Homecraft 8 1/2'' originally designed to run on the top of a table saw. This one is powered by an old dryer motor and gets the job done.

I have been shopping for a large disc sander. Seems to me like you (the OP ). Got a bit of a you **** deal their. I have a cheap import disc / belt combo now that really is a wood working tool that I grind metal with but it's a steamy pile of junk. I'm giving it to my brother because I want the shop space.

One of those tools that after you have used one you wonder how it was done before. I got this one off Craiglist with a trick I learned from the vise thread I caught it the first day it was listed and got no reply for three days then offered an extra 20; still snaged it for less then 200.00 but had to drive 200 miles as well.

That's just like the Delta/Rockwell I bought from Sydney Sabots when they sold out to Catalina Yachts. Paid $350 for mine--a really excellent machine that gets a lot of use on many different materials, metal and wood included.

2 HP 220 and dosent slow down for anything. Had a newer 120 volt delta at work and it wouln't take the pressure without bogging down. I really want to build a cart that moves and raises mine a few inches as I don't bent to well anymore.

heres an old rockwell i picked up and restored 6x48 belt 12inch disc it had a
1-1/2 HP. 3Phase motor on it i put a new 2hp baldor on it a guy sold me for $90
i got close to $350 in it the miter guage was off from a free table saw

Here's mine.
Got it off flea-bay 10 years ago from Canada took forever to get, think it was about 3 months. Was set up for 575V three phase, put a different motor on
and now it's running on 240V three phase.
Would be lost without this machine, it gets used constantly.
A very good purchase indeed

There are some nice machines in here. I had a old Delta disc/belt 3ph but ended up parting it out after not being able to find a top roller/adjuster for the belt. The reverse switch is a good idea!

Sanders, I got sanders! First is an Apex 20" disc, next up is a Porter Cable 4X54 belt sander, a real beast, and then a Delta 12" disc, which has had a drum switch added since the photo was taken. Also have a Delta 12" disc/6X48 belt sander I restored a few years ago, no pics handy. Also have a Kalamazoo 2.5" X 60" belt sander, which is on a custom stand with the same motor driving a buffing arbor.

Nice Apex. I have a new Delta 31-120, $180 on sale. I am also making a 12" disc I can put in my lathe, so I can change grits quickly. I'll post photos when I work it out.

Thanks and 20" discs do rock. I never thought I would need such a big disc but the Apex has such a killer big table that it makes it very practical for all sorts of jobs.

The big hand cranks to lift and lower and to angle the table is icing on the cake.

Great sander, looks like the twin to mine. Is that a static phase converter on it? How well does it work if it is? Put a VFD on mine, use it a lot more now that I don't have to fire up the RPC every time to use it.

Hey 454,

Ours look identical except for the lamp and dust collector. My dust vent attachment is self built by someone with more talent than me in sheet metal.

"Is that a static phase converter ?": Nope it's just a box for a step down to 120v for the light, nothing else. I'm finding the lamp very useful.

The motor is 2 HP, single phase 240v which we have plenty of and also 3 phase. I'm really liking the Apex, smooth as butter. Also gotta love the raw pebble finish on the guard protector.

Currently in the process of installing a VFD to my Powermatic 1200 drill press and need to do the same thing to my Delta 20" bandsaw, I really like adjusting the RPM thru a VFD.

If anybody cares and looking for 20" sand paper this is a pretty good deal if you want to try out various grits, it's Klingspor (Germany) paper and comes out to about $2.50/sheet shipped.

Not Macgee, but there is no cable involved, it uses a rack gear.

Oh, and Macgee, I bought that same disc assortment when I got my sander a couple years ago. After I got it, I emailed the seller to see if they would sell me just some of the coarse discs, was a no go.

I do know what your talking about and I noticed the cable and pulley/purchase lift system that works in conjunction with the rack & p gear. Next week when I go back to my shop I will photograph it in detail for you; I can't tell you anymore till then as I have not studied it very well.

Well, I stand corrected. The table raising is done by a rack gear, but there is also a cable that must go to a counterweight inside the pedestal. Appears to be pretty simple, attaches to the table, goes over a little pulley next to the motor, then to the inside of the pedestal where I assume there is a weight hanging. Meant to take a pic of the pulley, but I forgot.
