Building a METAL driveway gate, 16' wide, 4-5' tall.
Post up some gates you've built or seen that have artistic value. Lets see em!

I want to build something with more than just vertical uprights in it.

Show us what ya got!

Check out kingmetals.com, it's where most of the fabricators get their decorative metal parts.

Order the catalog as it is easier to see some of the design ideas.

I'd agree with that.Along wth the usual catalogue of components, our supplier also has a design book which lists the components required for certain designs.
They will also supply a kit of components/materials to assemble a set of gates.

Search around this site link below, some beautiful stuff there
You can buy plasma cut / powder coated panels of your choice here:

Build your gate and incorporate one of them into it. I used a small one as an accent piece on the deck I built. It's been up 6 years and still looks new:

The panel I used shown in my photo is the 19" x 35" "Wolf" on this page:

Next time I'm out that way ill grab a picture - did one for a friend, sunk 2 4x4 hss posts down 8' - simple angle tracks, vertical lift speed gate, run off a liftmaster egj opener, straight simple counterbalance off another set of 8" drums. Was under 500$ for the mechanics, opener was under 2000$. its been 4 years now - still haven't had to do any work on it... but next time i'd put some covers on the top to hide/protect the mechanics...

Here's a pair that I made for my side yards that don't have vertical uprights. One is about 10' wide and the other is about 16' wide.

My current plan might not work for the OPs 16' span, but I had been kicking around having a metal gate made up for me for some time. Got a couple of quotes around $2k. Bit much for just a gate, IMHO.

Also, a traditional swing gate would be a major PITA on my property - If I swing in, then I lose a lot of space inside property, and swing out I would have to swing out, then pull vehicle in.

Finally decided on a SLIDING wood gate after coming across what I thought was some real good plans. 2x3 standard house-wall type frame, 1/2" plywood on both sides...12' span. Hoping to keep cost under $800. Looks like it should be solid.

For anyone interested, here is the site I found it on...
