Here's my growing collection. All but the 3rd set from the right were bought at yard sales, that set was my Grandfathers :)

Bought the first 2 and last 2 yesterday morning. I see more of them in my future. Can never have enough vise grips as far as I'm concerned...

This and other threads made me go back and check my one and only pair, which turned out to be Irwin.

So yesterday, i found my first pair of Petersen 11Rs, and I am sure I will be on the look out for more moving forward....

The pawn shop let them go for $10 instead of the 11.99 advertised price. :pimpflash You won't know if you don't ask.

So far, I'm at two this week alone! I bought this 11R along with a few Craftsman vintage screwdrivers today and a swiveling New Britain 1/4" ratchet

Best buy so far for me at $3. I'm sure I'll find a $1 one soon, but for now, this satisfies my need for American vintage Petersen vise grips...

It ***** to see them procured by Irwin Tools.

1985 - American Tool Companies, Inc. is formed by the Petersen family and acquires Petersen Manufacturing

Found a small (~6")Peterson Vice Grip burried at the bottom of a box of other tools I picked up at an auction a couple of weeks ago.

It's missing the tension spring, though.

Any ideas as to where to find a replacement spring?

timbitca, this morning I bought, not just one, but two $1/each petersens....

I'm still on the hunt for that .25 cent purchase though.

One is a 10WR, and the other is a 10CR with Patent number on it.

Found these at a local flea market today, look to be powder coated, did Peterson ever do this? Someone that knows a lot more about these than me might be able to date them, on frame below release lever it says... Vice Grip

There were/are companies that bulk buy vise grips and then re-engineer the jaws for specific jobs to do targeted sales to certain professionals. That's what I think you have.

I doubt that Peterson powder coated those grips, but the company that built the jaws may have been the ones to do that as part of their sales marketing.

Quick Google search didn't shed any light, except that the few pictures I found of Peterson C5 vice grips were all black

Picked up these yesterday. Nice stash to begin my collection.

What's the best cleaning method and source for tension springs?

For anyone that needs springs or adjusting screws, Irwin will send them to you free of charge.

I only own two pair - but this one is worthy of a picture because of its history. When I was a 12yo, I was dumpster diving in a drop-box in front of a neighbor's home. I found these in that box and have had them in my possession ever since - the longest I have owned any tool in my possession (33+ years).

You can try Ebay, I've seen some small 5R's brand new going for $25.
