I just picked up a 12" Disston back saw from an estate sale for $4. Even rusty as it is, it cuts a beautiful kerf. What do you do to clean up a blade and sharpen a saw like this?

Great grandfather's old Disston, I believe it to be made around 1900. Handle was replaced by a pattern maker for me 30 years ago.

I tried Comet cleanser and a green scrubber/sponge combo. Seemed to work fairly well for the most part.

Wow, it looks like Europeans are making some fine saws. Even the Stanley Fat Max looks better than anything I've seen here in the USA.

Evaporust,electrolysis, or a vinegar soak. Looks like most of the blade etching is gone already.

Mark Harrell is a great saw sharpener/re-habber but he isn't cheap.

Thank you for the information.

I didn't see any evidence of blade etching before, during or after my initial cleaning. Some just didn't have it.

The teeth are funny to me. They have no set, but have like a 45 degree angle to the sharpened faces. Rip or crosscut? 14" and 14TPI BTW.

Bill- Head on over to vintagesaws.com. In the Library section there is info on cleaning and sharpening old saws in addition to identifying what type of Disston saw you have. In answer to your later query, this is a small backsaw and is filed to be crosscut.
Oh- and don't try to remove the saw nuts with a regular screwdriver or you'll ****** them up.

Just picked up a few more hand saws for $1.50 each, including a post 1928 Disston D-8 in pretty good shape with a beech handle and the blade etching.

Here's my latest (and probably oldest):
J. Mappin & Co
Sheffield
Pre-1840ish. London pattern beech tote, split nuts, 14", 11tpi (maybe - I do get cross-eyed counting such small teeth).
I scraped and brushed the rust off, rubbed some BLO into the wood, scraped off paint spatters and a little of the darkened varnish. Yeah, I know, but I wanted to see more of the beautiful grain. If it had been cleaned in England, there would be zero patina.
The tote is loose. I am hesitant of attempting to turn the split nuts, which are sanded flush, and not really circular. I'd like to completely separate all the components and clean them individually, but removing the nuts will certainly damage the wood that has shrunk around them. For now, it remains as pictured.
