Garage sale find today. A 1035, 31/32 always seemed like a wasted size to me. I guess 63/64 would be worse....
The blue handle on the mechanics stethescope has that Herbrand look! Nice.

What drive size is that ratchet? Also, just in case you didn't already know it, the "1340" marking signifies the use of AISI 1340 Carbon-Manganese alloy. That's a WWII ratchet.
Lugz, it is the J-10 3/8 drive. I was unaware of the 1340 marking until after I posted and started reading though previous post in this thread. Once again I am impressed with the amount of knowledge that is shared on GJ through our amazing members.

I thought it might've been a junior. That is an uncommon ratchet. I don't think I have a single Herbrand 3/8 dr piece.
Just got back from the flea market and snagged a Herbrand J-5 3/8" drive ratchet for $20. This thing is in spectacular shape, and the gear and pawls are in brilliant shape. I couldn't stop fiddling with it on my way home. I broke it down and have the body in evaporust with the screws to take off a little surface rust. I'm cleaning up the ratcheting mechanism now. I'll post back with an update once I put it all back together.
I am feeling pretty lucky, I have never seen anything Herbrand down here yet.

I'm attaching photos of my Herbrand SA73 1/2"-drive socket set with ratchet and flex handles, etc. It came in the original metal box with 17 sockets (up to 1 1/4").
Most of the parts appear to be unused. Just a couple of the sockets have some sign of wear, as does the ratchet handle. It's so "new" that the forward-reverse button on the ratchet handle is very tight still and hard to move. I love the "bullet"-shaped handles with the double bands of knurling.
From the Alloy Artifacts site I understand that this is a post-war set from 1946-53.
It came from an estate auction sale where I bought a number of tools recently. This set saw lots of bidding and went pretty high (around $100).

I am so sick of these flipping fly-bys! Guy shows up on the old Herbrand thread stranded up on the General Discussion board. His post makes it look like a newbie happy and excited with a nice score, looking for a little feedback and some confirmation on the dates he's researched. So I link him down here. He posts it down here. Not 24 hours later and it's on eBay.

But look on the bright side you can own it now. It will sit for a while with that price. The set is nice but not that $275 nice. Herbrand is good brand but nor that highly sought after. Even the J-9s have gone down in value lately.

Here is my Herbrand stuff, I'm positive I have some speed wrenches but a quick perusal of the speed wrench pile didn't turn any up. You'll also note some seemingly brand new wrenches. It looks like someone local has some new old stock they sell at car shows. I'm still trying to integrate my shop tools with my home tools so its possible there are more. This will need two posts.

In case anyone is curious the set sold for $275 + shipping.
I debated keeping it but I have a number of other sets I use and I decided to pass this one on, as it was too nice for everyday use. I was happy with the price since I had invested quite a bit of cash in it, plus a half-day drive to pick it up some distance out of town.
So good news for other Herbrand owners overall who care about the value of their collections.
Thanks to all who made positive comments on the set.

Well good for you. Not trying to be negative just really surprised as herbrand is not that sought after from my experience as alot of people do not know about it. I don't knock people who resell. I do the same and appreciate people who sell as it has helped me filling many holes in my collection. I am just really surprised it sold for that much. I may have to take another look at Herbrand.

I may be off-base, but I think the bullet-shaped handles are very attractive compared to the many run-of-the-mill handle shapes that are out there. That's what sold me on the set in the first place, plus the condition of course.

Jealous of the box, e. I've been looking for a top box or a sizable carry box for a few years now. My Herbrand collection is sitting in a generic WWII box right now.
As I told you up on the General Discussion board, where you first posted the set, and again down here, where you posted it after I gave you the link, I don't think Herbrand gets enough credit for their design flairs (and many of us on this thread have professed to that belief!), including the postwar bullets, and the set you bought at a public auction was fairly complete, in excellent condition, with an intact decal. But I still wouldn't value it at $275, and I wouldn't change my mind about that assessment based on one sale, either. Also, note that while the bullet design is neat, it is certainly not unique. Walden also made very nice bullet handles in the same timeframe, as did Blackhawk. Walden and Herbrand bullets have generally not sold at Blackhawk bullet prices. The buyer was someone who 'just had to have it', regardless of the price, or it was someone with really deep pockets for whom price is no matter. It happens. We've all overpaid, and we've all been on the receiving end of someone overpaying. Good for you that it happened to you with this set. Until I see a second and third Herbrand bullet set sell for that kind of price range, I'm not going to consider that the new going rate. That's why, when you revealed you had paid "around $100" for it, I figured you for a collector, not a flipper. "About $100" is what I would have paid for it. If you stick around to show and discuss vintage Herbrand tools, we'll see what happens together. EDIT: This forum is NOT a marketplace, but we do like to track it.

I pick up the herbrand when I see it, but not at the top of the list. A real onesy twosy brand.

I agree. This is why Plomb pebble wrenches are worth more than there smooth versions. They are no more functional as a wrench but the art deco deaign makes them attractive to collectors.

I've got some, but I really don't like to admit it. Snapped several of the sockets with normal use. Got them way back in the early 70s, when a kid and new glassman couldn't really afford great tools, with the cheap ******* I worked for. Finally got a job working at Ford, and doubled my weekly pay. Wasn't sorry one bit to leave that "career" behind.

Like I mentioned I have some -what appears to be- new old stock that I bought from a swop meet. The quality goes from fair to terrible. I have a 3/8 swivel that the Oxwall company wouldn't ship.

What Ricky Joe and Otg said. Herbrand VAN-CHROME era tools (30's and 40's) were equal to or better than the highest professional grade tools of that time. Conglomeration was their undoing, and they were not alone.

Most all of my Herbrand is Triangle-era stuff, and of all the tools I own, it's some of the least impressive both in terms of product design and fit and finish.
Oddly, somewhere around here is an NOS set of 1/4" drive Canadian-made Herbrand metric sockets that are absolutely gorgeous. I can't attest to "quality" in respect to their usefulness, but cosmetically they're as pretty as any of my old Indestro Super or Snap-on. Go figure.
During some back-and-forth with twertsy via email, he insisted that some of the later Triangle-era Herbrand was being outsourced offshore, and I don't think he meant Canada.

Shiftless, my wife and I were at a local estate sale this morning and we spotted this odd Herbrand tool and couldn’t leave it behind. I found a picture of it in the 1940 catalog. I actually have the upper wrench as well.

That's her brand! 
They must have made a lot of those drain plug wrenches. I found two of them last year within a few months of each other (see post #163 on page 9 and post #181 on page 10), and MR. X has one and the same wrench branded for Wright.
