I'm trying to decide on what to use for a small paint baking oven. I think this thread would be a great thread for everyone to show off what they are using and give other members ideas.

You could either buy an old oven off of craigslit or build yourself one with a wooden frame and about a dozen 100 watt bulbs

Can one of those things be used for powdercoating a vehicle frame one section at a time? If so, that's ****.

To be honest I don't really know. I'll throw it on a piece of metal sometime and check to see how hot it actually gets. For my purposes it only runs for a few minutes at a time, the longest is 45 minutes to cure primer, the clears I use are fast dry that will air dry in 2 hrs with a force dry of 30 minutes.

For those who use ovens, how do you prevent the oven grates that your parts sit on from marking up the paint?

Ok here's my 'scientific' test of my light. I used one of my wheel dollies as the guinea pig since 1. I don't care if I damage it and 2. It's the best thing I had handy that is close to the same thickness as a frame in question for powder coating.

First this is the temperature in the shop today, just figured I would get that in. I didn't think to get a reading of the metal before I started sorry.



This is 5 minutes after I started



10 minutes



15 minutes



20 minutes



25 minutes



And finally 30 minutes. As you can see it pretty well capped out at the 25 mark. So all in all no it probably wouldn't do powdercoat. But hey I got to play with a couple of my toys!!!

And before anyone asks, I was block sanding a bedside on a Dodge pick 'em up in between this test. That explains the primer dust on my hand and my thermometer lol.

If it's above 50 degrees, I point the truck South on a sunny day. That expansive, dark-colored dash creates plenty of heat in there. Hang a bungee cord and hang my painted parts off that. Depending on the temperature, one or two of these sessions is enough. I know, it's a little 'redneck' ... but for my needs, it's perfect.

Now, the guy that powdercoated the parts for my drill press .... has one oven large enough to put a small car in. It gets up to 400 degrees in about 20 minutes ...

Anyone use the small oven that Eastwood sells? It's pretty much a toaster oven.

Ok for small parts, I use a tinfoil lasagne pan and put chicken wire over it and put a curve to the chicken wire. This way the wire is suspending it in two places. Also I have moved one of the racks to the top position and then remove the bottom rack. Then you can suspend your pieces by little wire hooks. You do however have to let the paint dry at least a few hours before you put it in your oven. The reason you are baking it is to fully cure and harden the paint in 30 mins or whatever. If you were to spray a metal tool box and let it air dry with no oven, then it may be dry to the touch in 1 or 2 hours, but it would not be fully cured for maybe two weeks.

The carcass is an unusually sized file/shelf cabinet. It's slightly larger than 4 drawer front loading file cabinet. The drawers opened from the side however and when gutted it's deep enough to take 16" wheels (I've since removed the vertical piece in the centre). I plan to encase it with metal studs, insulate it and then skin the outside with sheet metal. I'll have to build a door for it and that should be pretty straight forward (metal studs, insulation, sheet metal skin, hinges, handle, rope seal, etc.).

The control panel from the original oven is removable and it will be attached to the top of the new cabinet.

So far I have $125 into this project ... all spent at ReStore.

One more thing for the project pile.

What would it take to get a few of those heat lamps like at the local fast food joint and "bake" your painted pieces under heat lamps

Well I got my oven and I love it. It's an outdoor electric smoking oven. It's pretty much the perfect size and only 110 volts. I would love a bigger oven but don't have the room for anything larger. This fits under my workbench when I'm not using it. It's light enough to just lift outside the garage door when I want to use it. Best of all, it only cost me $90 on sale.

Is it bad that even though this was just a few months ago for the life of me I don't recall working on a Dodge truck as of late? Too many cars enter/exit out of that shop is all I gotta say!! Dang I'm going to have to go through my books tonight to see what that was!!

I got my moms old range. Works great as I also use the stovetop for heating things. I put a long cord and caster on it.
