Let's see your portable tool kits

Hey guys, I have been organizing my tools the past few weeks and I finally have a dedicated "junkyard box" for trips to the junkyard, working on cars outside of work or my house, for traveling, going to someone else's place, or when **** hits the fan ect. Before I always just stood there on my way out the door (in a big old fvckin rush) throwing things off the top of my head into my snap on bag. But now I have a dedicated set of tools aside from my work tools, and home box. I'm pretty pleased with my set up! I'm a technician so it's set up for me personally I don't carry tools around for carpentry work or building fences or doing masonry.

Anyway I'd be interested to see what you guys drag around or have set up as your go bag.

There is a small sae set of 1/4 shallow, 1/2 shollow, and a couple wrenches. Everything else is metric

All fits in this nice little package


I'll still be needing to grab a bigger hammer a light and a 19 and 21mm wrench and my ct761 3/8 cordless impact. As I get or replace stuff in my work box it goes into my home box and the retired to my junkyard box

That's a good start. I don't see any punches. I can't live without those. A pair of side cutters is also essential.

Suggest you also throw in a narrow putty knife, a small can of WD40, and a rag.

Here are some pics of my pick up and go box for the better part of the past twenty years. Every time I try to downsize I don't have something when I need it and I end up going back to this tried and true setup. It must weigh about seventy pounds and is a pain in the **** to lug around but I have done everything from battery changes to head gaskets with little more than is in this box. A good flashlight
Zip ties
razor knife
Precision screwdrivers
And I always keep a cheap multimeter or at the very least a test light in my vehicle tool supply.

Here is my carry box. I don't have a garage where I live, but the parking lot is paved. It's a bit of a walk though, so I don't like to make unnecessary trips if I'm working on my car or motorcycle. Of course I don't always carry everything here around, but this is the rotation for now.

Edit: it's an older Craftsman 30" carpenter's tool box #6517, pretty HD with nice side handles as well as a lid handle. I picked it up for $10

my portable box's contents vary depending on what i plan on doing.

i use a bag, a CM cantilever box, or a vintage CM 3 drawer top box.

the bag usually ends up in the back of my off road truck
right now, the cantilever is loaded up with welding clamps, measuring tools, ect

I enjoy putting together portable tool sets. Figuring out what you will typically need and being able to fit it in the portable tool box can be a challenge. Being able to pick up and tote the box full of tools is another challenge also.

My Craftsman set with a 16" tool box doesn't have every tool you will need but it can work on a lot of stuff sometimes.

I have an Allen field service set with a 16" Armstrong tool box. Both of the Allen socket sets are stored in separate cases from the 16" box. The drive sizes range from 1/4", 3/8", and 1/2" with metric sizes only in 1/4" & 3/8" sizes. It is a lot of boxes to tote around but it can service a lot of old power equipment when needed.

Then I got Armstrong SAE and metric portable tool sets. These are nice tools. The SAE set is in the black box and the metric is in the red box.

Years ago I decided to put together my own SAE Craftsman Professional portable tool set. It is what I consider to be my own made in USA collector's tool set. Just a piece of tool history stored nicely in a box.

I decided to add a full set of USA Craftsman ETR sockets in both 1/4" & 3/8" drive sizes and a small set of box end wrenches. I don't think many more tools will fit inside the 18" box not to mention how heavy it is to lift.

My old Craftsman gray box was preserved as a part of my history also. It has a lot of old USA tools with a few newer USA tools added to fill in some gaps.

I've got two cantilever-style tool boxes that I use as "grab n go" boxes for miscellaneous jobs .... one box in Ohio and one in Virginia. Both are organized pretty much the same way. I posted these pics in another thread recently but I'll repeat here. Big problem is the cantilever style boxes hold so much they get heavy quickly!

These pics are of the smaller, 16 in. El Cheapo (Stanley) box that carries wrenches and sockets to 3/4" and 19mm:







Still need to add a few items such as a set of hex wrenches so I'll keep watching this thread for any other suggestions.

I have a bag I carry in the trunk in case of emergency. I have a good assortment of common garage-type hand tools - but I also have some other items that I consider essential for such a kit. Things like a roll of gorilla tape, a spool of baling wire, and a spool of contractor's twine. It sounds crazy, but I've found these items to be really handy when the unexpected happens. I also carry a tire plug kit and a hand-crank flashlight.
