Hey all, today I was bored and decided I'd redo one of my tired old hammers. This ol girl is a vintage blue point and the handle had been coveted with 3 or 4 heavy coats of paint after and hour or so of sanding I got it to bare wood and torched it, sanded it and oiled it, as well as polishing and painting the head. Not to bad for my first try, let's see yours fellas!

Wow, never really thought of redoing my hammers. They are the unsung hero's of the tool box thou!

Only hammer I ever did anything with was this old ball peen I salvaged from scrap drive at the local Church. Poly'd the handle and wire brushed the head is all.

No idea what manufacture it is. The handle is about 13" long. I like it.

Has a small crack on the lower end of the handle. Gives it character.

I keep it by my vise all the time. I always grab it It's funny there is a set 3 barely used Craftsman ballpein hammers in my tool drawer



Nope never a painted a hammer...

I have 3 heads I've de-rusted and cleaned up, a Proto cross peen body hammer, Atha 2.5 lb engineer's hammer, and a Pexto English pattern curved claw hammer. Still gotta paint and re-handle them. I'll be watching this thread!

I re-handled an old 16-oz Plumb hammer head last month. I like how it turned out.

The new thread today about "obscure tools" got me thinking and just remembered I have this hammer too. It was in the same drawer as the other ball peens I mentioned earlier. I originally found in old wooden tool chest that belonged to grandfather on my mother's side of the family, It has BELL SYSTEM stamped on it on it so I guess it was specialty hammer for telephone lineman dunno.

So yes I had painted the head just shot it a semi-gloss black it looks like, and did put a new handle on it (this had to be back in 80's I guess)

And though I haven't used it in while though, I did favor it often because the paint is all flaked and scratched now.

I've picked up a nice collection of very used hammers from the miscellaneous bin at the pawn shop - usually $2 each. Often they are very rusty with loose handles.

I wire brush the rust off, file or grind off any burrs, tighten the handles and then drop the whole thing in a tub of boiled linseed oil for a week. They come out with tight handles and a real nice grip. Then I beat things with them.

Just cleaned this up this week. I was suprised by how much the wood darkened through exposure to light.

What's up with the torching? If you look at my post above, you'll see that the handle end is blackened. I was thinking someone burned it intentionally but it's not a practice I'm familar with. What's its purpose?

Torching hardwood hardens the wood if you don't overdo it. I think people do it to tool handles because they think it makes it look cool.

Here's a Warwood I dug out of the scrap bin at work.
Filed down the mushroomed face, and stabbed a new handle in it.
Hopefully it'll outlast whatever Chinese item it was destined to become just before I rescued it.
