This is my shop crane. I custom made it for the loading engines and other items that I can no longer lift myself. The extention arm is 10ft above the floor. I use white Delrin for my upper and lower bearings. The lift arm is 7ft long, and has a cable support to the top of the main shaft. Not used often, but when needed it is a most useful tool in my shop. PS.It helps to have roll up doors:D

I like it. Very useful and you built it yourself. Any idea of it's real lifting capacity?

built it to help me take the body off the frame of my 63 impala.
assembled it on the ground and used the mazda in the backround to pull it upright. lol.
that was a good little mazda.

I put a hoist on a rail mounted to the ceiling. By my numbers, it's safe to load up with 1,000lbs but I limit it to 500lbs (which is less loading than two of my bigger buddies standing back to back in the same spot upstairs). That should be plenty to serve my needs. I've been blown away with how convenient it is on things I never considered before (besides pulling engines).

It has since been trimmed out.

Here's my 400 lb capacity bridge crane using barn door rail and a 3 x 5.7 lb I-beam. It's not quite finished. I need to build some stops, install an electric hoist, paint or powder coat it and change to grade 8 hardware.

There shouldnt be anything designed on a light home brew hoist that depended on grade 8 hardware.

This simple one has been modified to fit a couple shops. Finally got around to smearing the last of the paint on it.

I am aware of that. The strength of Grade 2 bolts is more than adequate. I found some flange bolts with locking nuts that will look much better than the mis-matched hardware that I had in my bins.

I built one for a bud, one end is fixed and the other rolls in an arc.

Very nice this is the same concept I'm considering. The decision I need to make is do I place it permanently between two bays with an 8' arm to service either car or place it against the wall as you have it which would require about a 15' arm. Not sure if a 15' arm is practical. Other possibility is to make it movable which may be as costly as a bridge crane.

On a jib crane like th OP showed you have to account for the leverage load where the post meets the floor.
The OP did it by achnoring the top of the post.
The factory guys do it by building a huge underground counter weight.

Hi Mr onetwo

That is a very good design crane looks like it would hide out of the way when your not using it, Yet get you the lift into every corner of the shop. Could you give us some dimensions of the beams and spans.

Thank you....I got very lucky and found the used steel for 30 cents a lb. The crane spans 21ft. and the runway is about 22ft. I used 4 x 3 x 1/4 for the runway columns and trucks. The runway itself is W8X4-15lb wide flange beam and the bridge is W10X6-30lb wide flange beam.I found 2 sets of cast iron 6000lb wheels on Ebay for $64 and used 1 3/8 cold rolled for axles.I have picked up a certified 2000lb weight with it and their was no strain or flex whatsoever.I can push it around loaded with 1 hand easily.Crane companies advertise their steel specs, so it is EZ to build a proper crane.Best & most useful thing I have ever built!!!!:D

I just happened to glance in to look at new setups, the bearing is super simple made of pipe. You can take head off of engine stand and install it there. It will roll out of the way against the wall.

I acquired a small forklift so I welded some old remnants of projects past together to get the body off for final welding on the cage. Comes in handy for lifting ****, not just stuff on pallets.

I thought **** awards are reserved for awesomely great deals? :dunno:
It may have been a fair deal, but not to the level of a **** award

I have a couple of chain fall anchor points in the overhead, that I put up 8' floor jacks under the ends if I need to use it
