Been doing some soldering lately. For some reason I really like it. I just got a Weller 100/140 Watt gun. I like the on/off with the trigger but it is a bit bulky lol. I had a iron before, I think I want the Snap On butane iron next.

The ole therm-o-trac 1002. I was given two that didn't work for my birthday back in high school by a guy who used to frequent Hughes auctions. One was completely beat up on the outside and the other would start to melt the tip if you left it on (that piece of tape says, "overheats" on it). I kept swapping parts till I had one working one.

I just wish I could find tips for it in town though. Also parts seem to be at a premium compared to weller, but least it still seems to be supported. The certification sticker on the back is from 94.

I have the snap on one also. Use it almost daily, love it.
When the tips are removed, the torch flame itself is perfect for shrink tubing, nevermind the actual tip that is designed for it.

I have the exact same setup as StephenW. Perfect for PCB work and comes up to temperature really quick. Ever since I bought it, I can't believe I used the cheap pencil irons.

For working on the Chevelle I use a Portasol like the ones above minus some tips. Like others said its great. I know I got it at Sears but I don't see it there anymore. Amazon has it here

For working on pcb boards or inside stuff I use the Hakko FX-888. Adjustable temp and works great. Amazon has it here

Back in the mid-eighties a co-worker of mine found a case of four of these (brand new) in the middle of the road while he was on deliveries one morning. Everyone was driving around it, but he decided to stop and see what it was. He kept one, gave one to me and sold the other two.
