Main goal was to make weed whacking easier and hold the stone in. That's a long driveway you have though.

I haven't done one, but would do something similar to the picture below. You can find the "retaining wall" blocks at Lowes or HD. Find something that fits your style and budget. Stone is nice because they will last forever, and if you accidentally drive over them they won't get torn up. And assuming you don't stack them too high it won't damage your vehicle(s) either.

Alternative materials would be that metal edging for flower beds. Cheap in comparison and fairly rigid with a good life span. Downside is easily bend if ran over.

Also, you could use railroad timbers or PT 4x4's. I just hate putting wood on dirt and an exposed conditions even if it has coatings to help it weather.

We come from rock country, ask any gardener. Rocks are everywhere in the woods. We got a lot of them together and just ran a line of rocks down each side of the driveway. Cheap, take a lot of work to gather big rocks together, but cheap.

Haha, I thought the same thing DJ. Not my house, I just grabbed a pic of Google to illustrate what I meant. If I lived there, the tree would be gone...probably by me taking it as I backed out the garage.

In regards to the natural rock Duct Tape Man mentioned, it is a good and possibly low cost/free idea depending on your situation. I've never used in this application but used around some flower beds before. Eh, it was okay I guess. It wasn't flat so I spent extra time with the weedwhacker on it.

With the blocks, you can run the lawnmower near the edge and then quickly hit the flat edges with your weed whacker.

Of course, the blocks can get expensive fast.

Personally I have just what you do. With no edging it is easy to mow and drive onto the grass if needed. Those curvy edges in post 2 would drive me nuts unless the gravel height was brought up level with the top of the curbing. I really dislike stuff that complicates mowing.
