Thank you Garage Journal. The pictures in this thread have shamed me into spending my afternoon organizing my disaster of socket drawers. And it was all afternoon too, it took forever. 1/4", 3/8", and 1/2" (I almost quit after the 3/8", but I stuck it out).

I'm not sure I'm going to keep the magnetic trays, I've always had them in another box, and I think they use up too much space, but its less of a mess than it was before.

Here's few photos my soon-to-be-retired trusty Husky 52 that's served me well for the last 3 years when I decided to get back into wrenching again after a 15 year hiatus. It's lightly modded, I converted the small bottom drawer into a power/air tool drawer using an Extreme Tools EXPTRSL hanging power tool rack and a Lisle 49960 pneumatic tool holder (2nd to last pic).

Here's what it'll be getting replaced with.

I sat last night , frustrated with my new tool box arrangement (better than it was,but still not happy).

I remembered why the magnetic trays lived over in the other box- they are absolute drawer hogs.

I switched back to rails this morning. Before and after pics:

Lista extra wide 13 drawer cabinet.
I repainted and added casters.

Now THAT'S what I'm talking about! Love it! Lots of SHALLOW drawers for tools, not plastic boxes, wide, and not too tall or deep!

I would swap that for my 18 drawer double MATCO in a heartbeat! I'd re-arrange so that deep drawer was on top doe sockets though!

Can we get some more info on that Lista? Price? Model number?

I suspect it was bought used since he painted it.

It's an older model, I believe a current close equivalent would be a model DW1225 or DW1350
Not sure what the amount would be on a new one.
This one was from E-bay.
Still need to make some wrench holders and dividers to finish it out.

I'm surprised at the depth, it looked shallower! but your Lista has over 5000 Square inches more space than My Matco. 14 inches narrower, 6 inches deeper. close to a wash for floor space. it is also 9" taller (casters may make a difference)

But with that box I could drop 4-5 smaller stacks or the equivalent... I "only" drop 3 with the Mactco

Bandit, are those red organizers that you have your screw drivers in from lista, or are they from somewhere else?

Love your set up. Square inches over cubic inches. What an awesome use of space.

I had several requests on my previous post for more info on how I built the hutch for my Harbor Freight 44's. Sorry for the delayed response! I built the hutch frame using 2x3 lumber and covered the frame with 1/4" hardboard. Used 1/4" pegboard for the back. I know metal would be ideal, but I don't have the tools to do metalwork at home... yet.

First, these boxes have a "lip" around the top, not flat, so I bought a sheet of 3/4" MDF and cut 2 pieces to fit inside the lip, laid them down on top of the boxes. This made a flat surface all the way across the tops of the boxes. If you cut very accurately, they'll slip in snugly and don't really need to be mechanically fastened to the box, as the lip around the edge keeps them in place.

For the benchtop, I found a heavy solid core door slab in the "bargain bin" at Menards. The door was a little beat up, so they sold it to me for $10. Took it home and ripped it to size on my table saw. To cover the ripped edge, I bought some metal threshold at Home Depot.

The hutch and benchtop are attached to eachother, but are just resting on top of the boxes, I didn't fasten them directly to the boxes. On the bottom/outside edge of the hutch, where it meets the boxes, I drove some large screws through the hutch into the side of the benchtop, just to square everything up and prevent any movement on the bottom sides of the hutch. Everything is solid, no movement, sliding, wobbling, so I don't see the need to fasten them directly to the boxes. Plus, this makes it easy/quick to move everything around. We just bought this house a few months ago, so garage is going to have a lot of changes in the near future.

It's no snap-on or matco setup, but it's a solid 88" toolbox with hutch for under $1000. I've been very happy with it so far! Still need to add some lighting in the hutch, will be browsing the threads for ideas on that :)

Added a side locker that I found in the local classifieds. It's a 5s series on a 4s box and the wrong color but it works haha 03964064db0eceff107069021a787fb3.jpg

How do you like the 4s boxes? Quality and strength? I've been maybe leaning towards one

It's been a good box so far, I've had it for about a year now. The only thing wrong is the detents on the big drawer are worn out. It holds a lot of weight though.

Thanks for sharing the whole concept and build. ONE of the very best things about GJ is sharing great ideas about our common interests!

This is my road box, custom built lifting

Frame, makes loading and unloading a one person operation.

Awesome. I've been wanting to add a extra 3 drawer to the bottom of my road box. Are the boxes bolted together themselves or just the through the frame? I assume you use some sort of hoist off the upper D handles?

Thanks
-Chris

Just received this today. I already had to modify it so I could fit my big 36" pry bar in place.

I believe that 72" KRL pales in comparison to his 14 foot long Epiq. That being said my Yellow KRL1001 wants to grow up to be a triple bank or Epiq sooooo bad!

I picked up a basically brand new 3 drawer Craftsman portable too box just like this one...
51ApIWe623L._SY355_.jpg

They're about $40 new (which is pretty cheap for what they are), and I got mine off of Craigslist for $20.

All steel construction, my only compliant is that it is a bit heavy for a portable tool box. And it's a little larger than my old portable but I'll get over the weight. The drawers make it MUCH easier to find what I'm looking for in my toolbox.
