How do you handle buying new tools or getting rid of tools?

I have some "core tools" that I've had for years, but I'm always buying more tools and selling others. Trying to keep up with changing the foam to accommodate that would be a nightmare.
I turned 69 and I've come to a point where I don't think I'll buy many more tools after collecting them and using them for 55 years. Tweek things a little, but no more major changes in direction. I have an 18yo grandson that's shown some interest in cars and tools and I'd like to be able to give the boxes and tools to him someday

The foam tool trays that I do have exist as digital files on the computer, so changing them is pretty easy by scanning in a new tool with a photo from an iphone and tracing/scaling it in Inkscape. There's a print shop up the street that will laser cut the foam for about 5-$10 a sheet. I supply the foam ($10 for 4 drawers at HF) and email them a file and pick them up a couple days later. He charges $25 setup, so I usually try to batch 4 or 5 to an order. A little fussy maybe, but for me it doesn't rise to the level of a 'nightmare' - it's kinda fun
......... and I don't need 10' of tool box to accomplish it or meet my needed space requirements.
I don't either, if it was just tools. I moved from a 1700 SF shop in Phoenix to a three car garage in podunk Show Low, so I store a lot more hardware than I used to. I use Schaller boxes for storing most hardware/consumables

My 'junk drawer' of tubes, tabs/brackets, spacers/standoffs holesaws, etc There's about a half dozen drawers of fasteners too

My work top and work center showed up today for my KMP-1022, my rep forgot to drop off my light for the work center but so far I am happy. I ordered this box the last week of June, still waiting for the overhead.

A little step closer, need that hutch light tho. The bedliner texture between my older box and the new one almost has a shiny texture that im not sure if i like it. My rep said SO changed bedliner material during covid it feels coarser too. My older box has some bubbling on the edges of its worktop. wonder if this new bedliner material is to combat this issue?

Is that the new XL series hutch? If so, could you measure the distance between the lowest point of the hinged lid, and the work surface? I'm really thinking about picking one up for a home for my scan tools.

Lockers are standard original size, or XLs?

The non xl hutch with the door open is 17.5in while the XL hutch is 21.5in.

Id really like to hear your feedback in the top box and some pics….

It's just like the bottom box really. I haven't put any tools in the top yet. It's weird how it sits on top of the roll cab. It doesn't drop into place like I thought it would.

The chest just kinda floats on top of the rollcab because of the support ridges it has on the bottom.

Does the top flip open, or is it drawers all the way up?

I had a snap on box with the flip up top, didn't care for it.

Thank you. It looks great!

All drawers. I don't care for the flip tops either. These are intended to put the overhead cabinets on. I stuck the original rubber mat from the roll cab up there and tossed some junk up top.

I won't be doing the overhead cabinets because I don't feel they make sense at home, kinda like a hutch wouldn't either. I can justify the lockers though.. 😂

Finally started getting this thing loaded up and rolling around. I love being mobile, but man it takes some getting used to coming from working out of an 88" box.

I assume you still have the large box?
Did you change jobs or just out grow the large box?

It's definitely nice being mobile, even in a small shop. I absolutely hated running back an fourth to my box, especially across the shop.

The Large box is still there, it's a 15 bay shop and the only spots for boxes are at either end or between bays. The orange one is just to big to really work between the bays and I just don't trust people pulling in and working on trucks next to it (no one really has a dedicated bay). So I just keep the things I use the most of in the cart and the more specialty stuff and duplicates in the big box.

Here’s my setup, it’s a bit of a mixed bag but for me it about practicality and not about how it looks. I have a Heritage 40” single bank with an old but fantastic Kra63B road chest on top, on the other side is a Bahco 5 drawer roll cab with a Starrett (Kennedy) machinist box from the 70s on top.

I’m on the look out for a KRL737 topchest in Kenosha Red, to replace my silver one… who knows what else might crop up…

so, I kind of thought I was done with boxes for the time being, but then guess what came up locally? Yep, a Kenosha Red KRL737 of 1997 vintage…

IMG_2871.jpeg

sadly it needs all new drawer slides, the drawer lock strips are missing, the gas strutts for the top need replacing and the lock-in bars for the lid are also missing… it’s had a hard life, so now I just need to convince a friendly SO guy to help warranty some bits. Sadly Head office in the UK are being less helpful than they have been in the past :/

I’m in two minds as to whether this will replace my silver KRL737, but we’ll see….

Microwave and toaster oven are handy but again still waiting on my overhead for my KMP-1022..

If I had that setup not only would I be in debt for the rest of my life, but I'd have to literally live in the box too (sleep in the hutch).

But damn, it's beautiful. I love Snap On green.

Nothing earth shattering but today I finally got my screwdriver drawer(s) straightened out a bit.

Eight years ago when I retired I combined my work box and my home box. A few screwdrivers came to live on pegboard over my bench while the majority of the rest got dumped into one deep drawer.

I bought some Tool Box Widget screwdriver holders from a friend that decided to use something else.
Here is the result

I might make some changes. I‘ll have to live with this awhile and see how it works.
