It's been about 6 years since someone posted about a Pelican 0450, and they've been redesigned since then, so I thought I would post my new one.

This is replacing a combination of a couple tool rolls, milwaukee packout cases, and a bag that live in my truck. There wasn't anything particularly wrong with the previous arrangement other than it was kind of a pain to find/access a given tool. But I had the opportunity to obtain this case very affordably, and I've always thought they were interesting, so I pulled the trigger.

I ordered it with only a single deep drawer based on the rough plan in my head and I think that was the right decision. That said, the shallow drawers are pretty shallow, so I was lucky to fit nearly everything I wanted in them.

The top tray is removable, which is really nice if you just want to bring sockets to the work, and they are all on Earnst trays/rails so those come out individually as well. I ordered Kaizen foam for the rest of the drawers and did all the marking/cutting myself.

I've got a couple more bare spots I can fill at some point, but I'm already over 100 lbs, so I'm not trying too hard to cram more in. If you see something obvious I'm missing or some way I could have optimized DO NOT TELL ME BECAUSE I AM SICK OF THINKING ABOUT THIS AND CUTTING FOAM.

Cheers!

I really like your setup. It's a shame these portable cases are not cheaper.

I agree. I think there are now some knockoffs out there, but I can't speak to the quality. I was able to get this one new for about $300, which is the only reason I could justify doing it. And hopefully I'll recoup some of that investment selling the Packout boxes it replaced.

$300 is far more reasonable and a steal compared to its MSRP.

zmotorsports or for anyone else that sees this post.... are the sockets that I circled in red weatherhead sockets??? if so what do you use them for???

Yes. Weatherhead. They're for installing, usually brass, weatherhead fittings. Otherwise you would need an open end wrench. They're like hydraulic adapters for lack of a better term.

Search images for weatherhead fittings. The square/cube shaped things are what those sockets are for. The brain doesn't really grasp how they work until you see the fitting.

Yes, those are Weatherhead sockets. As Scott mentioned above, they are used extensively when replacing brass fittings and other hydraulic/pneumatic fittings. I used them a ton during my years as an Industrial Maintenance Mechanic but don't use them quite as often these days. Still use them, just not as often.

So clean and unused looking, is there some super cleaner I don't know about for sockets?

It isn’t much but I get by well enough, I do plan to add one of the HF full bank carts this year at some point though.

Out of all the boxes I’ve had and used, my Craftsman are still my favorite. There’s just a nostalgia factor for me. I remember seeing them in every garage as a kid in the ‘90s. I have three right now.

Yeah, my uncle had a big set when I was growing up and craftsman were always what we used so it kinda stuck. I’ve had that 26” top box for probably 16 years. I also have a small 3 drawer midnight blue box I shadow foamed for a traveling tool box.

Still a work in progress as I’m trying to decide if I’m adding a partial set of 1/2” metric stuff in my most used sizes….

Oh boy, all those Snappys slumming in a Craftsman box. What would their families say?
Very nice job organizing
well to be fair, I almost went with a smaller two drawer blue point box I have but it has some sentimental value that couldn't be replaced if something happened to it so I opted for the craftsman. I will have to post some more pics when I get it done too. I have already added some other items and need to procure a few more to round it out.

Info on the hutch? It's half the normal depth of the box? What's the part number for it? Seems like the perfect solution for tall people.

Thats pretty nice, can i ask how you made the butcher top for it ?
I bought a beech butcher block top from Floor and Decor. It was 74”x37” so i had to cut the width down to fit between the flanges. Since the side box hangs on the flange i had to route a grove the height of the flanges so the top would sit flat. I then routed the three sides round on the top edge and then coated it with boiled linseed oil.

I have a soft spot for these rally type boxes. Growing up my dad and uncle both had ones loaded down with tools that would get carried to whatever they were working on. They were both mechanics so it wasn't their main set of tools, but as a kid I would of swore you could of fixed anything with the tools they had in those rally boxes.

This is my main bench right at the garage entry. I made it for the working height I desired.

There are two more work benches in the garage.

One is primarily storage space, while the other one has a vice and bench grinder attached to the top.

Everything has its place, like some on here I have been slowly cutting down on clutter of 20 plus years of tool buying.
Of course this is not all of it, just primarily used tools I keep close on hand.

Everything else needs to be organized, but this is my "grab it and go" box.

It's a mix of stuff from just about everywhere--ranging from '40s and '50s to brand new. A lot of it is old tools I inherited, and many I bought from flea markets and junk shops as well. I tend to gravitate towards industrial brands like Williams and Proto for new tools, though there is some Mac in there.

Looks like a nice "family" you have there.
Thanks!

I noticed that cool old Volkswagen camper and thought "Oh cool, look at that old Volkswagen, you don't see those very often!" Then I noticed your name and location.

Very cool!(y)
Thanks, they aren’t exactly common here, especially the Westfalias… although there are actually 3 in our barn now…

That's a "breeding population".
Ummm yeah, it’s not an unknown problem - see my point above about rare VW campers! 🤣
