I just got this new black husky 10 drawer ball bearing toolbox for Christmas. I kinda outgrew the red craftsman one I had a long time ago, so I gave that one to my little brother.

Bringing this back to the top. Finally got some pictures of my modest collection. The intermediate and the Ernst screwdriver rails are brand new from Christmas.

"Yes this drawer stinks a little..."

Holy cow I know what you mean. I bought a large set for Black Fri. and BOY did those screwdrivers smell.
Had to leave the drawer open for a few weeks to air out.

I took some updated photos for documentation, I may as well post them in here.

Good tools in a junky box :)
100_1983.jpg

DeVilbiss finishline, Imperial 400-F 37º flaring tool, Imperial 3/8" bender, cleco tools, there is a double flaring tool and bubble flaring set in there too. and a KD impact screwdriver set.
DSCN0052.jpg

bushing press, lots of specialty VW stuff, hair dryer, easy-outs.
DSCN0051.jpg

metric sockets. Mostly craftsman, Snap-on semi deeps, snap-on 12pt deeps, the SK set is filled with hex bit sockets 4-17mm. Most of the loose pieces are snapon triple squares and long hex.
DSCN0050.jpg

this drawer doesn't close
DSCN0049.jpg

This drawer doesn't close either, but is more full than the previous drawer.
DSCN0048.jpg

Electronics. It doesn't look like it, but I believe this is my most expensive drawer with all the specialized crimpers.
DSCN0047.jpg

Craftsman 7-19, Snappy 20-24, Cman stubbies. There is a craftsman flare set, Snapon flare set, two Craftsman raised panel sets, Craftsman crowsfoot, Gearwrench 30mm, Sunex 34mm, and lots of other randoms in the pile.
DSCN0046.jpg

Junk at the back, a couple Craftsman in the middle, the rest is Snapon.
DSCN0045.jpg

Snap-on 3/8" torque wrench, 1/2" drive junker torque wrench, plus some random stuff.
DSCN0044.jpg

Makitas (one badass, one cheapo), IR 2135Ti, IR231C, Kobalt, DeWalt DW101 drill I got for my 9th birthday back in 1994!
DSCN0043.jpg

Mostly Snap-on and Blue Point in here, prybars and scrapers too.
DSCN0042.jpg

Inch sockets. Mostly craftsman, except the Mac 1/4-1" semi-deep 12pt set. Snapon HD torx, Facom torx drivers, Lisle and Craftsman torx up front. SK inch hex set. Pittsburgh 1/2" deep impacts.
DSCN0041.jpg

Screwdrivers. Notice the Vessel JIS, inspired by GJ.
DSCN0040.jpg

inch wrenches. Snapon 1/4-1" Snapon flare nut wrenches, lots of Craftsman, a super old Proto 15/16x1' (the rusty one).
DSCN0039.jpg

Crapsman files, Facom punches
DSCN0038.jpg

3/8" drive. Cman and facom ratchets, Snapon F80, Snapon and craftsman extensions. **** orange PB Swiss hex keys.
DSCN0061.jpg

1/4 and 1/2" mostly Craftsman, some Facom, some Snapon (swivel and knurled extensions). Old style Stanley leverlock tape measures. I love this style, they're around 10 years discontinued now.
DSCN0036.jpg

Stahlwille deep offset, Facom thin (new, Taiwan), Gearwrench flat, Craftsman reversible ratcheting. All metric.
DSCN0035.jpg

Facom inch t-handles, bondhus inch, Craftsman (early, USA) metric. Drill bits in the center, nutdrivers in the right.
DSCN0034.jpg

I made this prybar rack to ease up on some overloaded drawers. 24" SK extension, 21" Snapon phillips, Companion (jnk) and Snapon prybars, Proto 24" 1/2" drive breaker bar.

One is for tool storage, and the other is just for plain old stuff.

I'll assume the mess I posted partially inspired your post, so here's my opinion. Yes it *****, it's not fun to work from, but I just can't justify getting a proper box. I'm a hobbyist, and I always choose to spend money on the tools rather than the box. At this point I'm looking at $5-6k to get into a box worth buying; something that would last more than 5 years without falling apart or becoming over-filled. I reconsider this choice every time I have to drop kick my hammer drawer closed, but I always make the decision to continue buying the tools and skimp on the box. Just a personal choice I guess, I hate messy drawers but it's the better option in my mind.

Nice selection Afazz. Do you work on vw struts often?

Yes sir, basically it's all I do! My friends and I all own VWs, I have been modifying VW suspension since I turned 16. I'm building a mk3 jetta, here's my suspension build thread if you're interested. I'm working on the engine bay now, it's a show car.
http://forums.vwvortex.com/showthread.php?4583881/page1

edit: P.S. that Metalnerd 21/22mm tool, combined with an extra-long Snap-on hex socket on a 3/8" breaker bar, is the best combo I've found. The Stahlwille deep-offset box wrenches work on the newer cars, but the mk2/3 upper caps are too tight. Both the Matador (tools.vw.com) and Autotech bit-style strut clamp spreaders ****, I'm still on the lookout for a good one.

I'd like to have a set of black handle craftsman files like that...

I like them. They do wear out, as all files do, especially when you pile them on top of each other! I think you can pull the handles off and replace the file itself, but when they go on sale it's cheaper to buy the whole set.

Chris_PT - kick *** Vette. I love the remote turbo

I've got a mk4 jetta and the metal nerd strut spreader seemed to do ok for me. I've not tried the Matador and Autotech.
