rainy afternoon here so i'm going through this thread; 25 pages up from the bottom and 25 from the top and something occurred to me.

is auto mechanics so much different from all other manual trades? does the 20% - 80% rule not apply? i could go on giving specific examples, and i'm sure there is a dedicated punch which is only capable of removing the knifling pin without scratching the johnson rod on a 1922 Abject Zero, but let's face it people.... we got a lot of OCD **** going on here....

and not that it is entirely a bad thing - yes the wife knows your out in the man cave polishing your 11/64" phillips ratchet thingie - but let's lend a kind word of reason to the young fellow just starting out and doesn't realize his 50$ husky ratchet and big box screwdrivers will get him going until he can enter the elite tool collectors of eternity club. maybe own up to the possibility that by the time we can affort lifetime tools, that term may be somewhat shorter than the guy using them to make a living.

just a couple of thoughts from a neophyte....

Two points if I may...

1. We've had lots of young fellows just starting out come onto this board and ask for advice, and they get it. I don't remember anyone telling them to buy a $10,000 dollar tool box and fill it with tons of shiny tools.

2. I, and most of the regulars who have posted on this thread, have taken a lifetime to collect what we have got. Some spend every last penny on new sets, some, like me, buy odd things here and there - probably more used than new.
So, I, for one, am not about to apologise for a. what I have got and b. enjoying looking at what others have got.

That's very nice; I really like choice in colour for the varnish, too!

What are the stays that you use for the wrenches?

The color was picked out by my daughter and is from Minwax. It's called "Island Water". Lucky for me it matches Ford blue pretty good! The stays, I think you are referring to the combo and flare wrench holders, are the material they make cutting boards out of. It was scrap - Delron? The wrenches hang on 3/16" brass rod that is swedged into the plastic. Flare wrenches are kept from sliding off by grommets.

Glad I made it to "Tool ****" status. Thanks:bounce:

I think they're cool! Always looking for new ideas. What holds the wrenches in the slits?

Part 2 - wall toolbox

First, D@mn it to all to ........, I love that, and wish I had decent wall space to do that in my basement (short ceilings). I may have to do that for my garage though, and add locks to the front.

Second, in the second row, first picture, what are those little white clips that are holding on your pliers? Where did you get them? (seen larger, never so small, maybe I didn't know WTH to look for.

Not really a tool box per say, but it is a rectangle and does hold tools. My Kennedy was too full and I decided to build something to go on the wall.

Dave

Like everyone else said that is pretty badass. I'll pay you to build me one.:bounce:

I've seen guys use wrenches as handles before, and I always wonder why they don't use a cheap half moon wrench instead. It's already shaped like a handle - just makes more sense to me.

I think it is gravity, by the looks of the way the trim is, the picture was taken sideways. But that's me, still would like the know other wise myself

Here is the link to the guy in CT that sells them. He has all sizes and grip ranges. I did think about locks, but I opted for letting a would be thief get to the tools easily so they don't trash my cabinet. Tools are easier to replace! Besides, the alarm keeps burglars away.

ddrewyor, great stuff! I can see a clever mind at work. I'm not a fan of diamond plate as a design theme, but you rock it.

Maybe you guys are both wrong and he has an anti-gravity machine in his garage?:bounce:

No they are just 30 degree angles cut in with a compound miter saw and some scrap 2x4's. Anti- gravity machine would be nice though, would need the jack anymore :bounce:

Here is our new box. Traded in the red one for it. Lots of room now, will have to buy more tools. Such a vicious cycle. Still have to get the locks changed over and a couple slides replaced but it is in a lot better shape then the old box.

Thought I would update the box pic. Was wanting something to put on top of the box to protect the flanges, and couldn't see paying for something from the so man. So this is what I came up with, took some maple flooring left over from a job and made a frame, nailed down the hardwood, then used a biscuit/plate jointer and attached pieces vertically around the edges mitered on the corners. I am happy with it so far and thought there should be some photographic evidence of it not covered with junk :bounce:

ATT00010%20(2).jpg

then i seen this one on the truck for the past 3 months, and did some calculations and such.bought the top little box for it and when all said and done with the trade was out about $1100 with intrest for both boxes.

ATT100001.jpg

this box is great has the steel top with rhino lining sprayed on it.the green one i traded i made out on.didnt loose anything on it.actually if i didnt buy the $500 blue box on top i would have been a even trade! between the 2 i lost only 4077 ci space.with the blue top i gained 400 ci over the green one!

oh it looks a mess on top, didnt get everything squared away yet.the scoot on top is a hybrid.a cross between a harbor freight scoot and a subway car headrest cusion.man is it comfortable!!

But still, you're trading a triple bay for a double bay...... :wtf:

Hey Vulture, Do you use the insulated wrenches much? I do lots of heavy industrial electrical work, and have yet to use one. Usually if I have to work something hot I can use my insulated Klein screwdrivers. If those don't work the powers getting turned off. I wouldn't want to crank on a connection with a 1/2 bolt holding it together. Lots of juice flowing through those big lugs.

A new box I picked up yesterday and am presently moving in all my scattered tool top two draws will be metric. So far with out going into my work box I have 6 combination wrench sets 4 open end sets and complementing sets of sockets. (75% are all S&K)

Yes, ever since we implemented the Arc Flash (NFPA 70E) any tool we use inside an de-energized electrical cabinet has to be insulated.

For people reading the thread who are not familiar with or don't work high voltage, you never work in an energized electrical cabinet. If you do there are two results, either your dead or looking for a new job.

That is a nice set up, did you get it as a set or build it as you needed/seen more things?[QUOTE/]

I built the kit as I could afford it. I still haven't bought insulated sockets yet. The company has a set, but it’s a pain signing it out or waiting for someone to finish with it.

Nice price Vulturej the most minor scratch in the paint and a few burrs in the perforations in the draws. 1/3 the price of new and only an hour to the factory BTW it is 41" tall.

I want more !
