You are missing the point entirely. I have plenty of stuff in my box that is Big and an auto mechanic wouldn't have a clue what to do with. I just think judging someone by their box is the most asinine, holier than though thing ever.

My job requires the tools of each of those trades you mentioned plus more and requires those items you mentioned plus more.

May I suggest you guys ease off the rhetoric a bit and agree to disagree?? A thread this significant probably won't get locked; but a lot of posts could get deleted and the poster banned, the direction this is going.

ALL these arguments are older than GJ. Nothing new has been said, and a lot of threads in the past were locked and offending posters banned.

Let people spend what they want, where they want; as has already been pointed out, it's no one's business but their own. They don't have to justify themselves.

No one has the job title of "I must correct these people because I disagree with someone on the internet!", But it sure seems that some think they do.

And last but not least, my Huot. I literally just freed up the last hinge. Now it'll get restored. Oh yeah, I forgot about the torn apart Taco cart in the back of the shop!

Can anyone school me on how to remove the drawers on the Huot???

Twertsy,

I just picked up the same Huot box and began working on it this week. The detents in the drawer slides are a bit awkward to manipulate but I found a pretty good method... I made a tool out of one of the metal hangers from a hanging file folder... I cut off the hook, ground a slight radius in the end and then bent the tip slightly. Slid the drawer out until it stopped, then backed it off slightly, slid the newly-made tool in and "jimmied" it while pushing the slide back into the box.
Once all the drawers were out I went back and removed the slides from the box using the same method, though I found it worked even better after I ground the radiused end sharp like a chisel to slip under the tang.

By the way. The closest I've found to the original blue hammertone paint for the box is;

Rust-Oleum® Stops Rust® Hammered Light Blue Spray Paint - 12 oz
Model Number: 7212830

Doesn't seem to be readily available here in California... The best I could find is Home Depot, who doesn't stock it but will order a case of 6 for $35.

The grey for the drawers seems to be everywhere though!

Nice box......maybe when I get off the service truck and back into the shop I'll buy a box like that.....until then the hf 44 will have to do for when I do actually work in the shop

Took some pictures of a few of my drawers today. I can't wait to get wrench and screwdriver racks, socket trays, and new dresser liners. I've been putting it off for way too long.

No reason to be ashamed i started with a smaller box then that a long time ago.
What's to be ashamed of? I have 2 26" stacks at home now that previously lived in my welding shop one was for SAE and the second metric , now one is in the basement and the other n the garage.

30 inch deep looks so nice. Someday I will ditch my **** and move to that.

Beautiful box in blue too. Good luck with it.

30" deep boxes even work more impressively then they look...you can actually decide how to organize your tools how you want instead of your tool box telling you how you are going to organize your tools.

Does that magnetizer work? In the second to last picture
Like the other guy said, they work okay. They're great for electronics work where you have a lot of tiny screws to deal with. The biggest problem is the demagnetizer, it takes some time to remove the charge and get the screwdriver to be 'unsticky'. Not surprisingly, considering the principles behind magnetism. I like having it around.

The only drawback to a 30" deep box is it's depth. (which is it's strength) if you have limited floor space, You can be impacted for getting them open all the way. But I do like them!

I know this for boxes but I thought I would add my cart in with some modified receiver driers for extra storage. regular aerosol cans fit perfect in the ford escape driers and my 1/2 gun fits in just nice also.

Picked up this Craftsman professional middle box at the local Sears Outlet store. It's 36"W x 20"D. They wanted $249 (1/2 off original price) but got an extra 10% off and used some SYW points, added tax back in and out the door for $238....

I thought it was a pretty good deal since I had plans for it.

I pickup the 36"W x 18"D stainless steel cabinet (free) a few months ago.

So the plan is to mount the red middle box either under or on top of the stainless cabinet.
Thats a nice mid chest, looks sturdy.

Why do we always go back to the fact that mechanics are the only ones that have and use tools? Go in any factory or machine shop in this country and your opinion will change. I DO wrench for a living, just not on cars. My job requires me to be a welder, a fabricator, and electrician, a process engineer, a plc programming guru, an industrial mechanic, a machinist and any number of other things. I shall bow down to the guy changing a head gasket or an lube tech, you guys are way better than me.

I guarantee my Craftsman and Gearwrench stuff takes more abuse than anything you own.

You don't work at Teva in Forest, Va do you? Sounds like all of our maintenance/facilities guys. They are freaking masters at their craft(s).

I just bought a krl773 to sit alongsingside my krl772 and kr7100 I just have to arrange transport to get it home. It'll be tight in my single garage until I can get my double built next year, but boxes like these triple banks don't come up to often in the UK. Especially 25 miles from home.

I'm gonna have to start posting mine but need to do some serious organization first. Got some great tool box setups here and make me want to visit the rock and roll truck lol

Nice setup you have there. I'm wondering if you could let me know what the height of your bottom box is from floor to your topper. I'm in need of more room and I've been humming and hawing over what to get for over a year now. I just can decide on a style or what size. Everyday I have a new thought or desire. I think I've been left with to many choices. Thanks.

Thanks Dmoen. That's a nice tall unit. I like it. I know the specs are listed in the catalogue but one can never be to sure on where the measurements come from. Here's a photo of the unit I work out of now, but the poor girl is busting at the seams. I'd show you a little but there's a few fellas on here that get squeamish when they see tools on top of tools. And I tell you there is a lot of that going on in this box lol :D Thanks for the post guys.

I've wanted to add a wooden top to my Snarbour Freight box. In the body shop, I've grown quite tired of how much grime that ribbed top collects. The new top is 1/2" maple ply with the front edge banded. I finished it with danish oil. It was a quick little project but Im happy with the way it looks.

Quick tip, you should bond another sheet on top of that, and leave it 1" over hang on the front. Then it would protect the edges from getting chipped. That's what I dislike about snap on made top. If I ever trade in my box, I will be hiring someone to build a custom maple butcher block top. The fit on mine has 1/4" gap on the back and one side. Or 1/8" if you perfectly center it.

By chipping the front, are you referring to chipping the paint on the box? If so, I opted against building up the top because I didn't want to overhang the top. To me, an overhang would create a nuisance when going to lock the box.

I agree on locking the box issue, but no guess you could always get creative with a router and.make a taper right there..

If your happy though, I'd does look nice! How do you like that box?

I like the box just fine. I had a Snap on box before this. But the real reason I love this box is because my fiancé surprised me with it so I could have my own box at work when I started there. I pimped it out a little to un-harborfreight it.
