I bought the Craftsman bottom 1st as a discontinued model number at Sears for $160, the Craftsman top from a Snap-On guy who took it on trade, $150 for it. Bought the Kennedy top and bottom at a pawn shop full of tools for $450. Don't remember what I paid for the 2 Kennedy middle boxes. Bought the 1 at a time. I had to make a plywood spacer to get them to mount together. Paid $75.00 each for the 2 parts drawer boxes on the left, from a sheet metal fab shop going out of business.

What's the small wooden cabinet on the top shelf?

Funny thing is, Canadian Tire sold this same box under Mastercrafts Maximum name. :)

Similar bones, different internals. One thing I learned from my researching boxes, the internals matter. I don't know about the mastercraft, but my slides are 250lbs per pair. The box empty is just shy of 900lbs, and I realized just how light a lot of other boxes are, even though they have the same footprint.

That being said, my older mastercraft was a heck of a box for how cheap it was. If that 73" can be got for a similar kind of deal, it would be a great deal. Similar to the American Harbour Freight boxes everyone raves about.

Btw, I am envious of your stainless top!

Outlawmws,

Do you use a jeweler's microscope to judge furgazies?

It is something that you could put a tool truck box and a total knock off side by side and look closely to tell the difference.

I wonder how the jewelers can tell a diamond from a cubic zirconium or 14ct gold from the .999 kind.

I've no idea what precisely your point is, :dunno: All I was doing was explaining WHY the cheap thin boxes don't hold up.

I was saying how neat it is that someone 'who knows their stuff' can tell between high quality and a cheap rip/knock off.

As said, when I was shopping for my box five years ago, they all looked the same with ranges from dirt cheap to a pretty penny (at Sears). Of course, I was tempted to get the cheaper one until I started handling the box and flexing it and then noticing ow much stronger the more expensive ones were. I guess that is where trusting your salesman can come n handy instead of just shopping by price alone.

I lucked up and, besides not getting an all red box like I wanted since they were out, I got a solid Waterloo domestically built for like ($350 OTD). This was before I spent time on GJ and discovered how much work and resources can go nto a box and can easily cost ten times more than what I paid.

Simply put Outdoormws, it is cool when someone develops an eye for an item and can tell you what living with it can be like. Like, taking a test drive for a car around the block and thnking you know it all versus living, parking, commuting with it for 100k miles. Some folks dont know what to expect, but sometimes folks like you can see potential hazards, stuff that may annoy one later on, a finish that will quickly turn dull,or even the box may stickup the shop because you couldnt tell when lookng at it in the store.

If that is still confusing, I will just say I meant it as a compliment. I basically said you have a jeweler's eye when it comes to quality. When some of us have no idea what we are looking at, you come in and explain!

I was at an estate sale of a small hobbyist woodworker a few years ago and that box was sitting there. I asked about it and the daughter said that the man had built it to store small measuring tools in it. They had no use for it and I did not want to see it trashed. I gave her $20 for it. It is pretty rough. I gave it to my young daughter (10) to keep small items in. She loves it.

Though the top two drawers on the left are swapped, they are the same box in most ways. I cannot speak about the difference in build quality but,

- Mastercraft Maximum 72"
- Tool Vault Classic 7215TC
- Montezuma 7215TC

All are 72" x 30"

They are all made by QCI, Quality Craft Industries Ltd. www.qct.net

Tool Vault:

Montezuma:

Mastercraft:

They may have different quality standards, but I doubt to a large extent. Cheers!

If you believe Canadian Tire's website, the "bones" are very similar if not the same. They don't say the box weight, but they list the shipping weight as 1006.6 lbs. Talk about accuracy, can't forget that last .6 lbs!

In the features they do list 250 lb drawer slides.

Damn that *****. I'm in WA the cost of living is fairly high here. I do ok but I'm not rich or anything. I'm a tech for enterprise Alamo national car rental it's a pretty sweet job. Fairly high pay hourly not flat rate and we sell the cars at about 30k miles so most the time it's fairly easy work. We get factory scan tools and service info for Ford, GM, Chrsler and Toyota. We do all the warranty and recall work on them ourselves so we stay fairly busy. I can't complain.

Im here in Washington as well, where a bouts are you located? What kind of shop if you don't mind me asking. Im here in central washington currently at an Independent shop.

It's the craftsman 1470 piece set. I don't think they even make it any more. I'm a bit of a craftsman fanboy. Most other techs at the shop give me **** for it but I like them as far as hand tools go.

Craftsman 1,470-piece Professional Tool Set includes a 300-piece Base Essentials Set,

198-piece Professional Essentials Set,

189-piece Specialized Essentials Set,

204-piece Advanced Access Pro's Set,

106-piece Advanced Professional Tool Set,

89-piece Specialized Access Professional Tool Set,

83-piece Ultimate Fully-Polished Ratcheting Set,

77-piece Heavy-Duty Mechanic's Set,

94-piece Auto Specialty Professional Tool Set and

130-piece Professional Impact Set.

And the box in the pic above.

I bought the updated version of that set, I believe they still make but now it's a 1560 pc. set I think, and luckily I got it before everything went to china. Just about all my stuff is USA made still.

Wonder if it will go for the usual 40-50% off ever. Probably not being that it is special order.

I like that it comes with a stainless top. Didn't know that. I prefer my three wide drawers as opposed to two, but that looks like a good box!

Box weight seams right on par with the other big guys. Canadian tire should have colour options for it. That's one thing I wish I could have had. Something other than black!

I made a foam insert for one of my wrench drawers with some of the anti fatigue floor mat stuff from HF. This weekend I'll go down to the military surplus store and pick up a green iso mat ( sleeping mat ) to put under it. I think it will look good when done and it keeps my wrenches from sliding around.

Im not a pro, so please dont make fun of my dinky franken boxes. But for what it is, I think Im equipped well for a DIY-er

So my setup generally looks like this:

IMAG0934.jpg

As you can see, I got a TASKFORCE brand tool box with a Craftsman Professional (the nice 16 inch deep one, not the chintzy one) 2 drawer mid chest sandwiched between them. Next to the tool box, I have a modified HF cart with the chintzy 2 drawer Craftsman middle chest.

My socket drawer:

IMAG0935.jpg

Ratchet drawer:

IMAG0936.jpg

Storage for various tools - thread restorer kits, compression test kits, torque wrenches etc:

IMAG0937.jpg

On to the cart:

Ive rigged the top up to hold HF socket trays:

IMAG0938.jpg

First drawer is ADDITIONAL sockets and specialty sockets:

IMAG0939.jpg

Second drawer is diagnostic and more specialty tools:

IMAG0940.jpg

Third drawer is my pullers, disconnects, and various brake and suspension specialty tools:

don't sell yourself short. You have more tools than some pros. That is quite the DIY collection you have there.

What's the word on the Taskforce cabinet there? Any sort of a model number or anything? I've been looking for a small cabinet like that to keep next to my box to keep supplies and the like in.

This particular one is discontinued - I would have to go check the model number, but you wont be able to buy this one anyway. They do have very similar designs now for $150-$200.

Im not particularly impressed by it. I would rather buy the HF tool cart or one of the Craftsman boxes that are on sale for <$200. Im holding off on buying big tool box, because we will be moving in the next couple of years and I dont want to get a giant box only to have to manhandle it.

Bottom line: There are better ways to spend your money than on this particular Taskforce setup.

I wouldn't necessarily need the 2 bottom drawers. But small cabinet like that would be handy. Brand isn't to important just looking for something similar.

What you're probably looking for is something like this:

spin_prod_1040656212

http://www.sears.com/craftsman-3-drawer-homeowner-project-center/p-00948081000P

This particular one was on sale last year for less than $70. I picked one up. They are unavailable now, but Im sure Craftsman makes something similar for less than $100.

The Sunoco sticker brings an air of respectability to the Task Force box.

HDX @HD might be the thing for a cheap cabinet type box.
Drawers on top instead of bottom.
Wait till it's under $100.

Thats the same drawer layout I'm looking to upgrade to. I love the 3rd long drawer and deep enough to put a plier rack in it
