Muddy, That is one DAMN NICE box!!! I love the layout of the top chest!

Thanks, Jim.......they actually aren't a set. The bottom roll-away is a matco and the top is a snap on. I bought them on the cheap......the bottom on ebay for sixteen hundred and the top box didn't sell on ebay for a thousand..... (it was still new)...... I got it for eight hundred so was plenty happy with the combo for 2400.00........
What was amazing was that I had tools floating around in a few different craftsman roll arounds and when I rounded it all up and consolidated into this blue combination I filled it......and my two craftsman boxes are still full so you can imagine how unorganized it had gotten. Anyways.......thanks

ya know, Wolverine, your comment made me really think. To be honest, Id bet alot that you know a hell of alot more than I do. I havent been around all that long, and there are so many things that you simply learn with age (not that im calling you old or anything). Id venture to guess that you have been through experiences, both good and bad, which I have yet to, and have helped to make you who you are today.

Really, I think it is I who loses this one.

Muddy, Why the hell cant I find deals like that?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?! The top box for 800!!! thats insane.

Man, looking at all these tool boxes makes me want to go shopping. It just ***** when you have to buy a new tool. Even if you don't need it.

Here's a few photo of my tool boxes. The MAC Tool chest/cabinet was purchased new about 25 years ago. The smaller chest next to it is for my overflow tools and small mechanical projects so I don't have to wheel out the larger one to the driveway. As you can see, I'm looking to purchase another larger rollaway/chest combo to store my overflowing drawers.

Here you go. You all should get a good laugh out of these.

Whe I was working in the automotive business, I had 2 Snap-On KR655 roll cabs. When I left the business about 8 years ago, I was storing them in my leaky sheds, and they were getting thrashed. I sold them to save them, so to speak...;)

Here are my current boxes. Each one has it's own story.
The top-middle-bottom on the left is and old Craftsman (I think). It is beat up but it does hold tools. I bought it at a storage sale for $25.

The center box originally belonged to (and was built by) my wife's great-grandfather. It housed the tools used in his auto and tractor repair business. Her grandfather had it, and when he passed away, all the relatives were circling like buzzards to snap up whatever they could sell. He had a lot of nice woodworking equipment, which is what they were after. Nobody wanted "that ugly box and all those junk tools". I ended up with it, and it was full of Blue Point, Plomb, Bonney, plus lots of pullers and other tools he had made himself. Junk, yeah right.

The top box on the right was given to me by a co-worker after it fell out of the back of his truck. He straightened it out and welded some angle around it to shore it up. He bought a new box and gave me this one. It works.

The bottom box on the right is actually a 19" rackmount computer cabinet. It came from a local newspaper office, as they were upgrading their system after a USAF U-2 crashed into the building in about 1992. I turned it sideways and mounted some drawers in it for power tools.

I just moved these boxes to their present location last weekend after selling my ShopSmith to make space. They were all in different places, making it difficult to work out of them. It is not very secure (lean-to built on the side of a shed), hence the locks.

When I eventually get a permanent structure, I will be lookint at Lista or Vidmar for tool storage...used, of course!...;)

First time using Phobucket, hope it works (my FTP site is down).

Will

The ones on the left, I think they are REMLine. Never seen any Craftsman's that were that style.

That is possible, as the nameplates are long gone. They are built exactly like the Craftsman boxes as far as the structure goes, except the bottom box has double-wall sides. REMline, Cornwell, Waterloo? I don't know how long Craftsman boxes have had full-width drawer pulls and recessed side handles, but it seems like forever. This one has bail-type side handles, but the top lid is identical to the box on the right.

They have been repainted several times. I painted the top and bottom red, but jury is still out on the middle 3-drawer unit. It may be too far gone to save, so I will probably borrow a drawer out of it to replace the missing one in the bottom.

Stuff like this follows me home all the time...it is truly a sickness...;)

I believe they are first generation MAC Tool boxes before they changed the handle from the round type to square box type. I've worked many years ago with a since retired heavy duty mechanic who own such a box and that's what inspired me to purchased a MAC Tool box over a Snap On version. They don't make tool boxes like that anymore.

Anyone know where I can pick up a good matching 3 drawer intermediate tool chest to fit between my MAC Tool chest and roller cabinets here locally in greater Vancouver B.C. area? Preferred the matching red MAC Tool type as per picture below. It's either purchase the intermediate chest to buy some time to handle the overflow tools or just bit the bullet and purchase a larger Snap On or MAC Tool chest/roller cabinet.

I really just started building up my tool boxes a couple of years ago. Before that I had just the carry along tool boxes.

The tall one is a 15 drawer Craftsman unit with the top compartment and the three small storage compartments on the bottom unit. I wish I had paid the extra for a ball bearing unit, but the standard draw sliders are working just fine, even with the extra weight of things like air tools and my tool collections.

The smaller tool box is a Stack-On unit that I purchased from an estate sale complete with the tools you see inside for a whopping $50. I almost felt bad. Once I got home and cleaned it up, I really did feel bad. Most of the sockets you see are Snap-On, Matco, or Craftsman. The wrenches are almost all Craftman...

I also have a few hanging on the pegboard. Part of this weekend's plan was to complete the wall with white pegboard...may have to go to Home Depot after dinner.

When I take the VW engine down to the basement for the winter rebuild, I will take the Stack-on unit down there since most of the tools in there are duplicates of the stuff in the Craftsman unit.

What's the brand name on that compression tester (3rd photo from the bottom)? I used to own it's twin brother.

It seemed like the logo had crossed flags?

It's a "Gilbert Davis Instruments" tester. No idea if it still works. I will find out when I test the VW engines I have.

I do remember the "Davis" part. It is difficult to hold the rubber end in the hole while cranking, as the compression tends to pop it out.

That tool is what taught me the "crank it 5 times" rule...;)

There was also a matching vacuum gauge with a color coded scale..."deceleration", "idle", "economy", "power", etc.

They are probably still in my Dad's garage somewhere....

Here is mine...the top is 1/4" steel and 7'5" long, the drawers are 48" wide and perfectly sized for all my toys, this was the day it was delivered its has not been that clean since. Yeah, with getting the exact size I wanted, with exactly the drawer configuration and stainless drawer fronts with every thing else powder coated, it was not the cheapest toolbox but I can guarantee it will be the last toolbox I buy in my life, the thing is AWESOME and beyond words, every thing super heavy-duty, nice solid steel everywhere. Base alone is 500lbs and I bet the 1/4" top weighs just as much.

here it is with all the stuff.

be careful when moving a fully loaded costco box.
the metal on the bottom doesnt take much to bend.
ill be building/strengthening the bottom with some better/more casters soon.

Here's a pic of my older Craftsman boxes. Think they are from the 70's. Almost have them all refinished now. Will get more pics.
Anyone know where to get the locks for these older boxes? Or, maybe they can be rekeyed? Thanks,Brad

Most of the lock cylinders are pretty standard. My local Ace Hardware carries a few different types, and any locksmith shop should have them as well.

The locking tang that attaches to the back of the cylinder can usually be removed an attached to a new cylinder, although some require more effort as they are riveted on.
