Well my father in law gave me a free little starter box until I can save up the money to buy the HF 44inch box for the garage at my moms. He also gave me a load of tools that he no longer needed or had extras of. The box is a Task Force 6 drawer work station with a work top on it. No wheels, but I'm gonna build a wooden frame for it to rest on to get it to a more comfortable height and put it in the garage for the time being. No complaints as I needed somewhere for my new tools without having to put them in my truck box. Pictures attached. Also to note, everything out of packaging is what he gave me and most everything in packaging and the 3 new Pittsburgh ratchets I got for Christmas.

Those Irwin Vise-grips are hands down the most versatile pliers I have ever held in my hands. Just used the smaller one while replacing my parking brake pads and all of the springs/hardware. Those things rock! Looks like you have a great start to your tool collection (hoarding, in my case, but tomato, tomah-to).

I'm looking forward to building my collection when I get the bigger box. Already eyeing complete sets of gear wrench sockets and I need to find some good complete sets of wrenches (thinking tekton for price but the sunex look nice and cover a larger range all the way to 32 mm). But thanks for the heads up on the pliers. I'm sure they'll get plenty of use soon.

I used 2' and 3' pallet racking to make benches and storage, the garage doubles as a home office for my wife so I lost some real estate in there. Built the garage 5 years ago, 24 x 30 with 10' ceilings and heated slab for Canadian winters.

I've been adding tools and running out of space

Needed a spot for the new Snap On pliers tray, so I had to reorganize the pliers drawer. The adjacent smaller drawer was commandeered for vise grips and clamping pliers. Now I have room for more This doesn't include more pliers, crescents, etc that I have in my mobile bags/trunk box, etc. Never can have too many, right???

I read the entirety of this thread before posting, took me a few days over the holidays over some beers but I found it interesting to see so many different setups for so many different types of vehicles/machines being worked on. The thing I find the most interesting is the pro mechanic boxes are somewhat organized but you can tell the tools are getting used vs the **** homeowner hobbyist whose tools look like they've never touched steel. I thought I had some organized boxes but compared to the hobbyist types here my boxes look a mess inside but compared to the guys I've worked with they think I'm super organized. I guess all that matters is that I can find a tool instantly and get the work done without messing about. I do have to laugh at the guy that had a drawer shadowed with like 5 tools in it, that's beyond a waste of space to me or the guys that keep all the space wasting trays the tools come with. Had one of those guys at work and he was always the one asking to borrow tools.

Bud you should get some kind of award going thru a thread with over 20k posts. I've been here bout 4 yrs and I still can't bring myself to doing something like that. And welcome to the site.

Oops almost forgot to mention your observations are pretty much spot on. I can tell you that back when I worked out of a box day in, day out the origination wasn't as necessary then since I could remember where I tossed something. Now that it's occasional for me I need that level of organization or I'd never find anything.

If the guy shadows one tool and it works for him, who are we to judge? I like seeing everyone's different setups and how their system works for them. After all it's all about getting the work done.

DIYers aren't constantly using their tools. They aren't going from job to job to job, every day. So they have time to clean and organize them after each job. And when you use them less often, organization is more important. Especially when you get older!

IMO Snap-on, Mac and Sunex (as well as many others I'm sure) put out some pretty awesome tool sets in well laid out blow molded boxes and trays. If I have the room in my toolbox and appreciate the organization these provide who is anyone else to criticize. To each his own.

I dig the lighting in hutches like that but I doubt I'll ever get a setup like that... just home use and since I'm a 6'6" tall genetic freak I don't think it would be tall enough.

I think cornwell makes a hutch that is pretty slick for the tall folks! Like this one, flips up out of the way or the homak tool box
