Drawer pictures as promised. Still not my final configuration. I need to work out a few details. I have some more wrench racks on the way and I need to move things around still. Suggestions are always appreciated.

1) top long drawer - sockets and ratchets
2) second long drawer - wrenches
3) torx/hex on the left, measuring instruments on the right
4) screwdrivers, nut drivers on the left / cutters on right
5) picks, punches, pry tools, etc and the right drawer is just markings tools for now
6) pliers and vise grips. (I need to reduce the number of duplicates)
7) air tools on the left, the right side is a deep drawer and has pullers, misc cased tools, all electrical tools, etc.

Last picture...bottom drawer has hammers and prybars.
I think one thing that your box swap can certainly help me understand better is the difference in shallow drawers from KRL to Epiq. What items specifically fit in a 2" KRL drawer that don't fit in the comparably sized Epiq drawer.

Also I'm not sure I ever posted pics or not but awhile back I moved all my pliers to a 4" drawer and used SO pliers racks. I used to like them all laid out in a shallow drawer but now that I made the switch it really helped open up some room and I like it better. I plan on getting three more racks and lining them in the back of the drawer.

I will take measurements later, Chris. I do not like my pliers this way. I had two pliersracks in my KRL that I preferred.

This is an old photo, but you get the idea.

It was a trade in to my Matco dealer who is a friend of mine.

Thanks! I always thought black was best, but I think this red is sharp.

While I was organizing I decided I didn't like the drawer layout. Had to remove the second long drawer and all the middle drawers to move the slides. It's more practical for me this way. I think it looks better, too.
Even better. Friends with tool trucks. :lol_hitti

Sorry these pictures aren't the best, I snapped them as I was walking out.

I put the tape measure at the front of the drawer lip. There is a little more usable height because of the gap in the drawers, about 3/16" or so.

Top drawer is 5", good for standing up sockets.

Second drawer is about 2 3/4". I was able to use the regular (not low profile) ernst rack and fit a 30mm wrench without hitting when I close the drawer.

The next drawers (that I swapped) are also about 2 3/4". I have some cases and other taller items in there.

The shallow drawers aren't even 2" deep. It would be nice if they were. I think that limits things.

The bottom drawer is about 6+".

Hope that helps.

Indeed Ernst manufactures these pliers organizers for Snap-on. In fact Ernst, Hansen and many other tool organization companies make lots of stuff for the tool truck brands.

I think we all see Snap-on and assume a ridiculously inflated price. In this case the racks are available in several colors from SO as opposed to just the red from Ernst. I gladly paid the $1.01 more for an all black rack that just blends into my drawer liner. 49353438fa0b6bd9a3b7dad97185211b.jpg

Well, it's not done yet, but here is my 90% complete portable socket and wrench set:

All I need is the 1/2" SAE impact set, and I'll move the deep wells into a case with my impact wrench, then I'll make a molded tray for them, and remake the 1/4" and 3/8" trays. Total cost is about $400, as cheap as I could put together a complete quality set (I'm not wild about the wrenches, but they are better than what I had).

The trays are made through the process in the "cheap way to shadow a tool box" thread; I made a mold the same size as the drawers, laid the tools out, covered them with cloth, sprayed expanding foam over the cloth, pressed it down, waited for it to dry, pulled it out and painted it.

Some of the tools moved, though, and the cloth didn't let the foam expand as much as it needed to. I'm thinking about trying cling wrap instead of cloth, next time, and bracing the tools in place with wooden dowels, which would also prevent the foam from expanding too much and surrounding the tools, and maybe some clay to hold the dowels and form cutouts for the extensions and ratchets.

Here's a few of my current setup... have had numerous boxes before this... KRA, mac tech 100, KRL561, then a classic 96 then this. this one started out as a KRL1022 and SS top. so much more room in a 30" deep double bank than the 24" deep three bank classic 96..

then I added a KRL1015 locker... then a year or two later the hutch, last KRL 1011 end cab. should have just bought the 1023 to begin with... lol

Did some organizing trying to condense down to avoid getting another toolbox. Haven't ever posted on this thread so I thought I'd share. Also laid out all my power tools. This is just my wrenches, ratchets, sockets, pliers, and picks. The rest is all still a jumbled pile, when i finish going through and deciding what stays and what goes I'll upload the rest. The bad part is I have a large box at home filled with triples and quadruples of everything in here. Thanks GJ.. 0d616c9f47e3f288b1ca9c5524ce455b.jpg40ca5797ea2d9078630630d30d23501d.jpge2a21c8e6bab330d363e9156db216a67.jpg48f212d37dec529d3f47a3198e4f9fea.jpg9a42cdb433796a691df72064a9a4696a.jpgd0128bc05b5723c9e0c667d94873da2b.jpgec37323442fae7c1ad8cc9b310fcf5c6.jpgc4464460e9ac25d903b0c4bb775b531b.jpgdca0ba42b4556b557140edf9e8cf060d.jpgafb97afe16448712e859d08c5c1e53a1.jpga62c8acf532588357665c25f6b82878c.jpg29d3acc949e2bc9d239803aa74926c71.jpg55943cbd2870060c9dd4aa8288e6e46b.jpg2cec70b8ff51a3d2e2126eb7433a1727.jpg4ddc502a86afaa4d58ae261f0159a5cb.jpgcd915b9ef2aa494672827bfa510e5e58.jpgb684cc3a59dee1f2fb5b4336c02cb32c.jpg1113eae7636110f2612cef92ca3b9d4e.jpg

That looks great ocloc! I like the HF box, but do those drawers sag under the weight of the sockets/wrenches?
Thanks! Not visibly, I'm sure they're overloaded though. At least my impact socket drawer and big socket drawer. Still slide in and out smoothly though. I'm content with the 44" with the top, side drawers and locker but it still leaves me very cramped. Im thinking of trying to add even more onto it somehow. I went to buy the 72" and was going to put a 56" top on it and I realized it would be a logistical nightmare. I really didn't like the thought of having to rent or borrow a trailer everytime I needed to move it. With the current set up I can transport it in my car even in a few trips.

I thought about getting a Snappy box but I couldn't get down with dropping that kind of money, and there were no good used ones around. I figured I'd much rather have a cheaper Chinese box stuffed with high quality US tools than a shiny Snap On box with HF tools.

I agree about having high quality tools in a basic box. But I think at a certain point that box will reach it's limits. I was originally going to purchase the 56" HF box but I found a used Snap On for a great deal. Then I upgraded from there. If you look around on Craigslist, etc you can find a used box for a good price.

Thanks to Heavymetaldoc I got another set of wrench racks. That along with some stubby racks from Amazon and I was able to organize a little more. Still not where I want it.

I do appreciate it! The 68 epiq is pretty sweet. One thing I would change is swap out two 2" drawers for one 4".

Source of those looped wrench racks in the back?

Looped tool holders are snap on. They come in several lengths.

I like those stubby racks, are the SnapOn ?

Stubby racks are Ernst. Amazon prime about $7 each.

I do appreciate it! The 68 epiq is pretty sweet. One thing I would change is swap out two 2" drawers for one 4".
We discussed it - the bottom will have the triple full width drawers, so stock configuration only has a single 2" in each bank. He's gonna have 'em drop those and bump up a 4" in each bank to 6" drawers.
Apparently, SO won't reconfigure a top box for free like they do the bottoms. We could order extra 4" drawers to replace the 2's in the top, but at additional cost. Since I'm adding this set to what I already have, I'm just gonna let the top box stay at standard config. since those will be the only 2's in the new set. They will get used for something, I'm sure.

Ocloc, random question but what's the part number on that long Snappy pin punch in your center tray?

I think, I'll double check tomorrow though. I ordered a 5/16 pin punch to complete my set and when it showed up it was 2" longer than all the others, drives me nuts lol.

I love my 68. It’s in my home shop now. I still want a hutch but since it’s not producing income I’m undecided. I’ve been considering building one. I hate the dust that settles on the top

Yeah that's kinda a tough one - the ready made hutch is nice to have a perfect match of color / trim and all that, but I think I'd probably build my own, too, if it's just for home use.

New arrival! Couldn't pass up the deal, and I was out of room. Bedlined powertop should be here sometime this week. Haven't finished swapping everything over yet, but very happy so far! The full top drawer is my old box for comparison, a 72" Tool Vault.

Nice! How deep is the Snappy vs the Tool Vault?

Thanks! This particular tool vault is 24" deep. They do sell a 30", though. The SO epiq is 30" deep. I really liked my old box, especially for the money. The detent drawers get old, but if you jump up to their 30" deep elite boxes, it's a grip latch like the Epiq.
