I've thought about that as well but with the Hansen trays you can't really take those with you, either. The socket rails are different and portable without them falling off/out.

The GearWrench racks seem to be a good compromise between ease of use and portability. They hold the sockets good and they don't fall over when you sit them down.

Primary tool chest is for Gunsmith business. Smaller chest/cabinet combinations are for precision measuring as well as tap/drill. The primary tool chest supports my largest workbench.

if you want a socket holder to take with you , check out the snap on a263b and the a288b, holds lot of sockets, has a grab handle I bought the smaller ones 20 plus years ago.

I also like them because you can put 1/4, 3/8 and 1/2 drive all on it . mix and match, common impact swivels etc .

Found this Craftsman at a flea market for $10. Almost new condition with not a single speck of rust.

My dad was a building engineer for a retirement community for a while and was given a couple of those. The one he gave me is a little more used but still in great shape for the age. I just keep a few random things in it but it’s definitely cool to have sitting in my work area

This one of my toolboxes. The top and bottom boxes were a Christmas gift from my wife back about 1982 or 1983. The mid and side boxes were added later, late 80's maybe early 90's.

This is mine. At the moment I can not afford another better one.
Do what you can with what you have and don't feel ashamed. A box never made a mechanic.
I own a small offroad shop and work out of 3- 26" craftsman boxes and a few 7'x4'x2' shelving units.
Sure a big $10k box would be much more convenient and a little time saving but at this point I'd rather have that money in tools and in my pocket.

Ditto!

If I was making my living with my tools my main box would be one for these:

Everything commonly used in reach, and no drawers to open. And I'm not a fan of top boxes. I prefer rollers, so I'd put it on a wider roller and the less used tools would be in the drawers, or I'd have two rollers, one would get the Montezuma, and one for work space... (with a mid sized vise on it)

This version the socket tray lifts up to access more storage... I'm sure the other has a lift tray also.

I’m really interested in these, but I sure would like to be able to play around with one before I pull the trigger. I find when a company decides where my tools should go it doesn’t usually work well for me.

Well, they have different configurations, and sizes, not to mention case materials... I just posted a couple of options...

I agree with bk13. I’ve always liked those boxes but if you don’t like the layout there’s not much you can do to rearrange things

Again, look at the different layouts, and determine what best suits you, and if not, move on. Its not like you don't have choices.

Frankly, the real issue is what combination of tools you prefer; they are ALL in hands reach. Are you going to make an issue about if the ratchets are on the right or left? :headscrat

I have a Montezuma triangle box mounted on my pickup. I have a flat bed on the pickup and it serves as a work bench. The montezuma is very handy to work out of when you are not working out of the shop. The place where I work part time has one on a cart in there shop and it works very well.

When I had a garage I worked out of a big cornwell service cart. Don't have a garage anymore so I got a montezuma to work out of my truck with. If I ever get a shop or garage again I'd like to sit the montezuma on top of a 2 or 3 bay roller. You'd have a nice work area right next to the box to work on. They're not bad to work out of once you get a system down and you could grab it and throw it back in the truck if you needed to.

Those montezuma triangle boxes are rad. Id love to combine one with a cart somehow.

I had this idea as well and it didn't work out the way I wanted. Felt way too top heavy - but that may have been my crappy older Craftsman base I have it on. Regardless, they either work for you or don't. For me it didn't and I decided to replace it with a Matco JSC770. Not necessarily the Montezuma's fault, but more the old base that I just got tired of.

If I need something on a truck, I'd definetly go with the Montezuma again. Simple design that works, but as others stated, you have to pick the box that works with a layout for you.

Mine sits on my matco cart. It easily cleaned out 4-5 drawers in my 72 inch box too. 9b797cc097a6f1fb7c2dad68ecc397f4.jpg

I've gotta ask... Does that Montezuma fit a full set of sockets? SAE, Metric in all 3 sizes, shallow and deep, 6 and 12 point and impact?
That's my biggest concern. If it does I would be very interested. If not, it wouldn't really be helpful as I would still need to take up drawer space.
Thanks for your answers.

It fits my chrome snap on sets with left over pegs and I've added individual sockets beyond the sets you can buy on the truck. It wouldn't work well with impacts, the pegs are too close together.

Agreed.

I've always had a special place for LJ's. My son had a very nice '04 LJ that he built his senior year of high school that was cherry. He just sold it about 8 months ago to build a WJ.:headscrat

I know his WJ will be nice when done but I had a hard time seeing his LJ leave the stable.

Nice set of road/trail tools.
My jeep offroad tools are all in soft bags. One bag for each category of tool. The bags are then kept in a shallow pelican style Dewalt box which is held to the floor tie downs with turnbuckles and S hooks trimmed so that a few twists of the turnbuckle releases the box. I've tried everything and this is my favorite. I'm then able to latch another of the Dewalt flat boxes on top of it with all of my recovery straps, shackles, ****** blocks, gloves, bottle jack, etc.
