This is the first box that I ever bought. I bought it used in 1991 for $1500. I remember thinking that it was HUGE. I brought it into the shop to service the slides and give it a good cleaning as it has been sitting for the last 5 years. I noticed that it is stamped "MATCO" on the metal but all of the nameplates are "MAC"??? We don't have MATCO in Alberta, can someone explain the differences and similarities between these brands?

MATCO (Mac Allied Tool COmpany) use to be affiliated with MAC and made tool boxes for MAC as well selling their own MATCO line. At some point they split and now are no longer associated with each other. I'm sure Krusty or someone else on here could give a more in depth history but that about sums it up.

Interesting, did not know that, I was thinking the names were awful close. I found the following on the Mac Tools website:

Mac Tools History

Mac Tools was founded in 1938 as the Mechanics Tool and Forge
Company by seven men with the common goal to manufacture the finest tools in the world. The first step toward their goal was taken on July 11, 1938, when they signed the Articles of Incorporation, and were officially recognized by the state of Ohio. The state issued 250 shares of no par common stock, of which these men could only afford to subscribe to 55 shares.

Nonetheless, they persevered, and elected Ralph McPherson and Otto Tucker as the first President and Secretary of the organization. These two men scraped up all available capital, a paltry $5,000, to secure a building and buy used machinery so they could begin production.

WWII Brings Growth...

World War II brought prosperity to the Mechanics Tool and Forge Company because of the sizeable government contract received in 1942. In 1944, they recapitalized with the help of the Securities Commission.

Shortly after their capital investment, the company received a proposal from Clem Poole, concerning the opening of a socket division. Though they recognized the need to introduce sockets into their product line, they did not have the means to finance the opening of the division because of their recent investment.


Enter Clinton Tools

The management of Mechanics Tool and Forge decided to open a new, associate company with virtually the same stockholders, rather than expanding the existing product line. On October 30, 1944, the Clinton Tool Company was born. With Clem Poole as its president, Clinton operated in the same building as Mechanics Tool and Forge and is the lineage from which the present day line of sockets and accessories hail.

In 1945, Russ Darrah, a 20-year veteran of the hand tool industry, presented Mechanics Tool and Forge with a program designed to purchase an allied line of tools. This resulted in the formation of Mac Allied Tools which was moved to Akron, OH to facilitate shipping. Even though there were three companies functioning as one, their collective product was always referred to as "Mac Tools."

The 60s and Beyond

1961 launched the companies into the modern era, when Mechanics Tool and Forge officially changed its name to Mac Tools in 1963, leaving the association between Mac Tools and Mac Allied under the collective banner of Mac Tools, Inc. In 1979, the long association between Mac and Mac Allied severed.

Today, Mac Tools has a product line in excess of 42,000 items, and still uses the direct sales approach with a mobile sales force of distributors. The Mac Tools philosophy of excellent quality, price and service remains unchanged over the years, and the company spirit that made them successful in 1938, is the same spirit that makes them a leader in the automotive tool and equipment business today.

I used a company called Kramer Konstruction http://www.kramerkonstruction.com/. They were great, I must have searched for a year and 10 different companies. These guys were the cheapest and best quality I found. They were on schedule and budget to exactly what their quote was. I dealt w/ Tom & Debbie. I even got $75 dollars extra because I used my buddy as a reference. They built my buddies building a few years back and he has no complaints.

I Bought a guys tools the other day and this came with. I have been paying close attention to what people on this site have been saying about tool box values and I have to say, you guys are right on the money. With what you guys have said and with the damage by the handle, I advertised it for $850. It sold an hour later for $750. Not bad considering that I only paid $850 for everything.

thanks... it is used and little damaged but all drawers are work good and it will hold all weights.... that good for me... i am understand that some of you rather to have used and almost perfect shape (wear) but for that price so i got it... my snap on guy told me if i have problem then he will take care of it...

My Cornwell CTB58BBL is a last years model, a bodyman owned it for 6 months and then traded it for a triple bank Cornwell, My dealer sold it to me for 2k it is a 6k box, Like new, I have him looking for the used top box for it now and a used side locker.

Those Dinzl lift boxes were once sold at Overstock.com, priced at around $130. I don't know if they are made in Germany though as I don't recall see the tell-tale sticker. A company called Grip used to sell them, too.

There is a person on this board that showed his on this thread--the third and fourth attachments are of his.

There's also the Stahlwille 90.

jbbies - any idea how old that box is? My grandfather's box is a MAC and has the same handles. The box is up at my parent's house right now, otherwise I'd post a picture of it. It has the perfect amount of patina that can only be acquired through years of use (and not abuse). Even with the slides and plenty of weight, the drawers work at least as well as my ball bearing drawers.

YmereJ...I really dont know how old the box is... I like the thing a-lot didnt pay very much for it I think 100 but it holds alot of tools and since Im just a hobbyist into vintage and classic things its perfect. I wish I could just find a matching top.
