The far side of crazy.. but sometimes Australia
VFD/VSD or DC PWM conversions
A bit of searching shows a few threads by individuals but not a lets see 'em thread.

I'll kick it off. This is a 3 phase drill press I bought from a mate last year.
Drill is of unknown manufacture, but we can safely assume its 1940's vintage because it still has an ID plate from an electricity supply company on it that changed its name in 1946 I believe, so WW2 vintage wouldnt be an unrealistic guess.
The original 1HP three phase motor was going to cost too much to get the ends of the windings extracted to be able to wire it for delta so I bought a pair of 3/4 HP motors from ebay to use in place of the original.
The VFD is a Huanyang 3HP Chinese made unit, again from ebay.

I'll get a picture of the whole machine tommorow when its daylight and not raining.

Sorry, I'm not twitliterate. What does VFD, VSD, or PWM stand for ?

(I should probably know these, but they aren't coming up from the depths of puddin' tween the ears)

Not being well versed in three phase would it not be cheaper just to buy a single phase motor and swap it out or the three phase instead of buying all the other electronic parts for the original three phase motor?

Depends on the application, Installing a VFD on a 3 phase motor allows your to vary the frequency to the motor, the slower the frequency the slower the motor runs. If you have an application that requires a large degree of speed changes the the VFD certainly is the way to go. I have installed them on many differnt types of equipment from conveyors to pumps and fans. Set up with the proper controls they give the ability to control a process set point, such as pressure in a pipeline by controlling the speed the pump is running based on a process variable.
