The progress of my shop is not as fast as I wish, but here it goes. Bench finally done. I still need to finish cabinets interiors. All done by myself.
I have to put some light below the top cabinets, too. I haven't decided yet what to put in the back wall. Enjoy!

great looking cabinets, can you show us a good shot of how you made your cabinet door slider tracks? and what is the ********* thing against the wall?

I built this woodworking bench in 1994. It's 40" tall, which works for my height. The vise is a Record. The surface is two 3/4" pieces of plywood, one laid on top of the other, with the birch faced piece on top. The trim around the edges of the top, and the wooden facings in the vise, are maple. The base is pine.

This is my Grandfather Oscar's shop workbench, with a Columbian vise. I painted the pair last fall. I remember them needing fresh paint since I was a toddler -- decades ago.

right now, I have a bench made on top of old base cabinets!

This is what I'm working on for my garage. The cutout/recess is so I can belly up to the workspace while standing on the ledge. I didn't want to have to use the ground level while using the bench, but wanted as much top space as I could get.

The lower opening on the left is minus one shelve compared to the right side so I can store the shop vac there. It's just so dang clumsy, I want it out of the way of the rest of the garage. I wouldn't get rid of it for the world though.

I am running some power to that area because there is nothing there currently. I have a 12-plug strip that will go along the back for plenty of use.

I am planning to build some shelves and/or a cabinet above the bench for additional storage.

The 2 of them are pretty tickled to get some real estate in the shop.

akdiesel, Thanks. The end of the handle broke off long before I got a hold of the bench. For the last 18 years (on and off) I've looked for a replacement handle; however, I couldn't find anything that would mate up with the internal latching hardware. Last fall I noticed a kid at Lowes playing with a pair of mini Vise-grips, and that gave me the idea to buy an inexpensive pair of Vise-grips and use them as the new handle.

Started a new one yesterday, made from 3/4" marine ply. 3 layers for the top and the front 'legs' are several layers glued and screwed together. I was going to use 2 x 4's but I have a load of the ply already, so took the easy route.

Right now I'm making some doors for it. And it has been trimmed down so it clears the two tool-boards at the back.

I decided not to put a lower shelf in, so I can simply slide or roll heavy stuff in. I'll keep my bench saw, welder etc in there.

I thought that this would be an excelent gift. Honestly to give the boys each their own slice of the shop partially justifies the time I have put in building the thing. Thank for giving my beliefs some added credence.

Here is my effort at a home made job.. 2400mm long, 500mm wide (bench space), 1000mm bench height, 2000mm total with 600mm x 200mm x 1200mm x QTY 2 Wall cabinets..

I Used 30mm x 30mm x 1.6mm SHS and 500mm x 1200mm Plywood laying around at work, the whole bench was free and took me about 3 hours to build and does the trick just fine.. Its still in the blue primer coat the steel came with and raw welds are all visible.

Getting very close to having this bench done. Waiting on the budget to catch up so I can get the upper cabinets.
Got the bench top, electrical, airlines, and the peg board finished. The I had extra unistrut for framing in supports for the temporary lighting until I can get the upper cabinets. I wired in a push button switch for the lighting. I liked this better than the typical light switch in that it takes less room and blends in with the set up better. The airlines were ran in the unistrut along with the wireing and I have one connection at each edge of the cabinets and one in the middle of the peg boards. I was finally able to get a hold of the electrical outlets I have been looking for. I almost went with a wired powered strip until I found the unistrut pieces.
The whole unit is bolted to the wall and the floor. I wanted this set up due to the typical rolling tool boxes since I have almost tipped my old one over a few times with more than one drawer open at once.

I never did like pegboard, not sure why, I guess it was just the looks of it,
and I have a lot of time to make things just the way I want them,

Here's a pic of my main bench. Almost all of it was built out of scrap except for the drawer slides, and castors. Everything else was laying around my shop. Being a pack rat pays off sometimes.

I found this site a couple of weeks ago while idly googling workbenches to get some ideas. This thread was so great I registered and then actually built one, and here it is:

This was my first non-trivial wood project, but I figured I'd watched enough of my dad as a kid, plus countless New Yankee Workshop reruns, to not screw up too badly. 8' long, 30" deep, 36" tall. The front legs are sistered 2x4's, and I set the bottom shelf behind them so my feet could have some room. The top is made of doubled-up 3/4" plywood, and the table itself is lag-bolted to the wall studs.

I finished it up last night and as you can see I've already moved into it. Still need a vise, there's a big-*** Columbian locally on CL right now that's tempting.

This is my work in progress.. just finished building the main part a few days ago. My dad and I built it out of 4x4s, 1 3/4" SC door for a top with 1/8" masonite and pine trim. The top is only 24" deep and I've got it set to 42" high. I originally was going to remove the casters and build a shelf/toe kick to sit on, but decided to have them movable for now was good. I turned switched the casters(with a little mod work) so the box goes in and out. As for the US General Boxes, I had one for over a year and really liked it. When I heard they were switching to the gloss red, I went and bought another one. Hence what stirred me to build this. I'm glad I did.. went to HF since and I don't like how the gloss red looks.

As for the peg board, I just started hooking things up and out of the way till I can go thru everything and actually organize the tools. With 4 kids and a business to run, my time is in short supply! I hope to get it organized my the end of May and I'll repost some pics.

I'm not a wasteful guy and took the leftover solid core door piece(which was free from a job site) and made a small bench for grinder and eventually small drill press and maybe keep my drill doctor there. The brackets were a Menards special one weekend, FREE with mail in rebate! Gotta love making things on a budget!! Even the bench grinder POS was free when one of my guys left the country and never came back! LOL

Long-time lurker, here .. and the thing that finally flushed me into the open is an observation I think might spark some interesting discussion. Given the opportunity to go in either direction, do more folks prefer to store their commonly used tools (open/box wrenches, screw drivers, sockets and related stuff) on a wall ... or in a drawer? And, of course, why?
